Start with the controls that have the clearest privacy effect: press the Echo microphone-off button when you do not want voice input, review and delete Alexa activity, select a voice-recording retention period, and decide whether recordings may be used to improve Alexa. If you own an Echo Show, check its camera control for your exact model and review interest-based advertising and suggested-content settings.
The privacy controls that matter most
Echo privacy is controlled at two levels: the device in your room and the Alexa account in Amazon’s cloud. The microphone button is the immediate, physical control. Alexa Privacy controls what activity is stored, how long voice recordings are retained, and whether recordings may be used for service improvements. Echo Show adds camera and on-screen content settings.

Press the microphone button on the Echo. A red light appears, indicating that the microphones are off. Press the button again to restore voice input. Amazon’s support wording is direct: “When you turn off your Echo device’s microphone, Alexa won’t respond to voice commands until you turn the microphone on again.”

This is the most useful setting for a meeting, a medical conversation, a guest visit or any other situation in which you do not want the device listening for its wake word. Muting the microphone does not power down the Echo. You can continue controlling it through the Alexa app, and other non-voice functions may continue normally.
What the red light does—and does not—mean
- The red indicator confirms that the Echo’s microphones are disabled.
- Alexa will not respond to spoken commands while the microphone is muted.
- Muting is reversible: press the same button to restore voice interaction.
- The control is device-specific. Muting one Echo does not mute other Echos on the account.
2. Inspect Alexa history and remove false wakes
Alexa sends what you say after the wake word to Amazon’s cloud for processing. A false wake occurs when the device mistakes another sound or word for its wake word. Reviewing history is the fastest way to see what Alexa actually captured and how it interpreted it.
- Open the Alexa app.
- Choose More.
- Open Alexa Privacy.
- Select Review Alexa History.
- Open an entry to inspect the audio recording, transcript, your typed request when applicable, and Alexa’s response.
- Use the available deletion control for an individual item or the date range you want to remove.
You can also manage the same activity through amazon.com/alexaprivacysettings. Check this page after a suspected false wake rather than assuming that an accidental activation left no record.

Why deletion is not an instant, universal eraser
Deleting an entry starts removal in Amazon’s cloud systems, but Amazon says processing can take time. Information associated with an interaction may remain temporarily to support functions such as reminders or orders. Data held by a third-party skill developer, or stored outside Amazon’s cloud, is not necessarily removed by the Alexa history action. Amazon also says trained systems may be retained after the source data has been deleted.
Therefore, treat deletion as removal of the Alexa activity Amazon identifies, not as a promise that every derivative or third-party copy disappears immediately. If a skill has its own account or privacy controls, review those controls separately.
3. Choose how long voice recordings are retained
Alexa provides four practical retention choices. The setting governs voice recordings; it is different from deleting individual history entries.

How to change the retention setting
- In the Alexa app, tap More.
- Open Alexa Privacy.
- Choose Manage Your Alexa Data.
- Find the voice-recording retention control.
- Select retain, three months, 18 months or the option not to save voice recordings, then confirm.
Under the no-save option, deletion happens after processing rather than before Alexa handles the request. Amazon says transcripts and typed requests can remain for 30 days after the last interaction in a chat. This is why “don’t save voice recordings” is not the same as “keep no record of every request.”
Voice ID and personalization
Amazon warns that Voice ID will not work when you choose not to save recordings. If you delete recordings that were used to create a Voice ID, Voice ID may stop working. More generally, Amazon says deleting recordings, transcripts and typed requests may limit personalization, reduce its ability to improve Alexa, and cause certain features to stop working.
4. Decide whether recordings may improve Alexa
Retention and improvement use are separate decisions. You can choose a retention period and separately manage whether voice recordings are used to improve services and develop new features.

- Open the Alexa app and tap More.
- Choose Alexa Privacy.
- Open Manage Your Alexa Data.
- Locate the control for using voice recordings to improve Amazon services and new features.
- Read the current description and select the option that matches your preference.
Turning this use off does not make the Echo stop processing a command you actively give it. It limits an additional use of recordings. The trade-off is that less interaction data is available for service improvements and some personalization.

Only Echo Show devices have the screen-and-camera issue described here; standard Echo speakers do not automatically have a camera. Controls differ by model and generation, so do not apply instructions for one Echo Show to another without checking its model name.
Software camera control
Amazon’s current instructions for the Echo Show 8 (2025 release) and Echo Show 11 (2025 release) place Camera Access under Privacy & Permissions on the device. A corresponding control is available through the Alexa app’s device settings. Turning camera access off disables some features that depend on the camera.
- On the Echo Show, open Settings.
- Choose Privacy & Permissions.
- Find Camera Access and switch it off.
- Alternatively, open the Alexa app, select Devices, choose the Echo Show, open its settings and look for the camera or privacy control.
If your model does not show a software switch, that does not prove the camera is always active. Amazon says most Echo Show devices include a physical camera shutter, but “most” is not “all.” Examine the exact device and generation for a built-in shutter before buying or fitting any cover. An incompatible cover can block sensors, interfere with the display or fail to cover the lens.
Features affected by camera changes
Disabling camera access or closing a shutter can affect camera-dependent functions. The precise list depends on the model and software, so check the warning shown when you change the setting. If a feature stops working after the change, restore camera access only when you need that feature.
6. Separate interest-based ads from suggested content
Echo Show owners may see sponsored advertising and non-sponsored recommendations on the home screen. Amazon provides an interest-based ads control under Manage Your Alexa Data.

- Choose Manage Your Alexa Data.
- Find the interest-based advertising setting and turn it off if you do not want ads tailored from inferred interests.
Opting out of interest-based ads does not remove every Amazon advertisement. Amazon distinguishes sponsored ads from suggested home-screen content, which can include recommendations, frequent orders and local places. Those suggestions may therefore continue even after interest-based advertising is disabled.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming the red light means the Echo is powered off: it indicates microphone mute, not a complete shutdown.
- Confusing retention with improvement use: choose both settings; one controls storage duration and the other controls an additional use of recordings.
- Expecting “don’t save” to remove all text immediately: transcripts and typed requests can remain for 30 days after the last interaction in a chat.
- Expecting one deletion to erase third-party skill data: skill developers may maintain separate records and controls.
- Using instructions for the wrong Echo Show: camera switches and shutters vary by model and generation.
- Expecting an ad opt-out to clear the home screen: suggested orders, places and recommendations are distinct from interest-based ads.
- Forgetting other Echos: the microphone button affects the individual device you press, while account-level privacy settings apply to Alexa activity associated with the account.
A practical maintenance routine
After changing the settings, open Alexa Privacy once to verify the selections. Then periodically review history, especially after an unexpected activation. Use the microphone button for short-term privacy rather than changing account settings every time. Revisit camera access after a software update or when an Echo Show changes behavior, and review the interest-based ads control if the account’s advertising preferences change.
These controls work together: the microphone button limits immediate voice input, retention determines how long recordings remain, deletion removes available activity subject to processing and related-data limits, camera controls protect visual privacy on supported Echo Show models, and ad settings limit personalization without eliminating every recommendation.
