Start with Adaptive Audio if you want your AirPods to respond to changing surroundings, then adjust how much outside sound comes through. Add Conversation Awareness if you often speak while listening, and try Personalized Volume if you want automatic volume adjustments. These are preference-based starting points, not a mandatory checklist: keep only the changes that suit how and where you listen.
1. Try Adaptive Audio and tune its ambient-sound slider
Adaptive Audio combines noise-cancellation and transparency behavior, responding to changing environmental noise. Its slider controls how much ambient sound is allowed through, so choose a level that fits your surroundings and comfort rather than assuming one setting works for everyone.

- Connect and wear your AirPods Pro 3.
- On iPhone or iPad, open Control Center, then touch and hold the volume control.
- Choose Listening Mode and select Adaptive.
- Adjust the Adaptive slider in AirPods settings or Control Center.
On Mac, use Control Center or System Settings to select and adjust the listening mode. Menu names and paths can vary with operating-system version.
2. Turn on Conversation Awareness only if it fits your listening habits
When Conversation Awareness detects that you have started talking, it lowers media volume and enhances voices in front of you. Apple says it restores the previous listening state after the conversation. This can be convenient for brief conversations, but it may interrupt listening if you speak often or do not want automatic changes.

The stem controls are useful to know before you change anything: press once to play or pause, twice to advance, three times to go back, and lightly swipe to adjust volume. Press and hold can be assigned to switch listening modes or another supported action. Check that assignment so you know what a long press will do, especially if you use it to end a Conversation Awareness interaction.

5. Understand Loud Sound Reduction before changing it
Apple describes Loud Sound Reduction as reducing exposure to loud environmental noise in Transparency and Adaptive modes. Apple also says AirPods Pro 3 Hearing Protection is off when Loud Sound Reduction is turned off. Treat this as a feature relationship, not a guarantee of hearing protection in every situation; do not rely on it as a substitute for managing exposure to loud sound.
6. Treat Live Translation as optional
Live Translation is not a basic setup requirement. Apple’s current U.S. support guidance says AirPods Pro 3 require a compatible iPhone 15 Pro or later, iOS 26 or later, Apple Intelligence turned on, Translate installed, and current AirPods firmware. Availability varies by region and language. Apple also notes that starting Live Translation turns on Adaptive Audio if it is not already on.

Choose settings by the change you want
- Want the AirPods to react to changing surroundings? Try Adaptive Audio and tune its ambient-sound slider.
- Want listening to respond when you speak? Try Conversation Awareness; turn it off if voice-triggered changes interrupt you.
- Want to keep control of every volume change? Leave Personalized Volume off. If you want automatic adjustments, try it and see whether they suit your preferences.
- Want an optional translation feature? Check Live Translation’s device, software, and regional requirements first.
These recommendations reflect what Apple says the controls do; they are not the result of comparative testing. For Apple’s descriptions, see its support guides “Use Adaptive Audio with your AirPods,” “Translate in-person conversations with AirPods,” and its AirPods controls and hearing-feature guidance. Settings and availability may change with software updates.
