Which AI Models Are Best for Coding, Research, Writing, and Image Tasks?

No AI model is proven best at every task. Compare candidates by workflow, current version, and results on representative coding, research, writing, or image work.

There is no evidence-based single winner across coding, research, writing, and image tasks. The strongest choice depends on the specific job and the tools around the model: coding-agent features, source retrieval and citations, document handling, image input, and image generation are separate capabilities. Treat vendor descriptions as a way to build a shortlist, then compare current versions on work like your own.

What the available model descriptions can tell you

Official model catalogs and launch announcements explain what each company says its models are designed to do. They can help identify candidates, but they do not provide a neutral, matched comparison of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google across all four task categories.

Provider or model What the provider says What that does—and does not—establish
OpenAI GPT-5.5 OpenAI says GPT-5.5 excels at coding, online research, analysis, creating documents and spreadsheets, operating software, and moving across tools. A broad vendor capability claim, not independent proof that it outperforms competing models on your tasks.
OpenAI model catalog OpenAI describes its latest models as supporting text and image input, text output, multilingual capabilities, and vision. It lists GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst for image generation and editing, and GPT-Image-2.5 Flare for everyday generation. Useful for distinguishing image understanding from image creation and editing. Availability and catalog entries can change.
Anthropic Claude models Anthropic positions Claude Fable 5.1 for demanding reasoning and long-horizon agentic work; Opus 5.5 for long-running agentic coding and knowledge work; Sonnet 5.5 as a speed-and-intelligence combination; and Haiku 4.5 as its fastest listed model, with near-frontier intelligence. These are Anthropic’s descriptions of its models, not a controlled comparison against other vendors.
Google Gemini model catalog Google’s API catalog lists Gemini model options and lifecycle statuses, including models described for complex tasks, reasoning, and coding. Use the catalog to identify candidates and check their listed status; the descriptions do not establish a cross-provider ranking.

These statements are attributable to the vendors’ GPT-5.5 announcement and OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google model catalogs. They are positioning and product information, not independent test results.

Choose by the task, not by a single “best model” label

For coding

Test the model in the way you actually work: generating a change, explaining unfamiliar code, debugging a failure, or operating a coding agent across files and tools. A model’s ability to write code is not the same as an agent’s ability to inspect a project, use tools, and carry a task through. OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 announcement and Anthropic’s descriptions of Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1 identify coding and agentic work as intended areas, but neither establishes a winner for your codebase.

For research

Judge the complete research workflow, not just how convincing the answer sounds. Check whether the product can retrieve relevant sources, cite them accurately, distinguish evidence from inference, and synthesize conflicting information. The vendor materials described here do not provide a matched measurement of source-grounding accuracy across OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.

For writing

Give each candidate the same brief and evaluate the deliverable you need: for example, whether it follows constraints, preserves supplied facts, uses the right tone, and needs little correction. OpenAI describes GPT-5.5 as suited to creating documents, while Anthropic describes its models in terms of knowledge work; those are useful shortlist clues, not comparative evidence of which will produce the better draft for you.

For image tasks

Separate two different jobs: interpreting an image you provide and creating or editing an image. A model that accepts image input does not thereby establish that it can generate images, and an image-generation model is not automatically the right tool for analyzing an uploaded picture. OpenAI’s catalog makes this distinction explicit by describing image input for its latest models separately from its GPT-Image generation and editing models. Check the current catalog for the product surface and model you can actually access.

How to compare candidates fairly

A useful comparison holds the task steady and records exactly what you tested. Try several representative examples rather than choosing from a single impressive answer.

  1. Write down the job and success criteria. For code, that might mean a working change with the requested behavior; for research, cited claims that match their sources; for writing, a brief-compliant draft; for images, a correct interpretation or an output that meets a defined visual brief.
  2. Use the same inputs and constraints. Give each candidate the same prompt, files, source material, and permitted tools. If one product has browsing, a coding agent, or image generation enabled and another does not, record that difference instead of attributing the whole result to the model.
  3. Record the exact version and access path. Note the model name or ID, product surface, tools enabled, and date. Catalogs include lifecycle changes, so verify that the candidate remains available in the interface or API you plan to use.
  4. Score the output against your criteria. Track correctness, completeness, citation quality where relevant, instruction-following, revision effort, and any failures that matter in your workflow. Do not let fluency substitute for checking factual or functional results.
  5. Check practical constraints separately. Price, usage limits, latency, privacy, and integrations can affect the choice, but the official materials summarized here do not establish a current cross-provider comparison of those factors. Verify them for your region, plan, and product surface.

Why a benchmark score is not an overall ranking

OpenAI published a 100.0% result for GPT-6 Astra on the MRCR v2 8-needle 256K-512K comparison row in 2026. That figure describes OpenAI’s stated result on that specific benchmark row; it is not a general quality score, nor does it compare performance across coding, research, writing, and image tasks. A benchmark is useful only when its tested task and conditions match the decision you need to make.

Practical recommendation

Build a shortlist from current vendor catalogs, select candidates for the particular task, and run the same representative work through each with tools and constraints recorded. Choose the model and product workflow that best meets your own quality bar and practical requirements. The evidence available here supports task-based selection—not a universal winner.
