Which Ad-Blocking Settings Protect Privacy Without Breaking Websites? A Firefox Desktop Guide

Firefox desktop’s Standard Enhanced Tracking Protection is the compatibility-conscious starting point. Strict blocks more tracking content and cross-site cookies, but may affect embeds, logins, forms and videos; use a site-specific shield exception when needed.

For Firefox on desktop, start with Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP) set to Standard. It blocks major tracker categories while preserving more site compatibility than Strict. Move to Strict only after testing the sites you depend on, and solve individual failures with a per-site exception instead of disabling protection everywhere.

What this advice covers

This is guidance for Firefox desktop. Mozilla’s Standard, Strict and Custom ETP labels are Firefox settings, not universal names for Chrome, Safari, mobile browsers or every ad-blocking extension. Other browsers may use different controls and defaults.

ETP is primarily an anti-tracking system. It can block resources that also happen to deliver advertisements, but it is not a promise that every visible ad will disappear. Firefox also supports ad-blocking extensions; the choice of extension, its filter lists and its own compatibility behavior are separate decisions from ETP.

Why Standard is the sensible starting point

Standard is Firefox desktop’s default protection level. Mozilla says it blocks social-media trackers, cross-site tracking cookies, cryptominers and fingerprinters on all sites. Tracking content—third-party material identified as tracking—is blocked only in Private Windows under Standard.

#1 Best Overall
Notary Privacy Guard Suitable for Dome Notary Journal
  • No more exposed information in unprotected notary journals. This product shields clients' confidential information from prying eyes. It allows the Notary Public to keep the journal open during the transaction, as NO prior client information is viewable.
  • Shields clients' AND Notary Publics' confidential information
  • GLBA and HIPAA require non-disclosure policies and procedures. Notary Privacy Guard is a compliance tool for the professional Notary Public.
  • Decreases Notary Public's liability from exposing client information
  • Journal column headers are printed on the Notary Privacy Guard, no having to peek underneath to complete the journal entry. Becomes part of the journal and also acts as a place marker.

Standard also enables Total Cookie Protection. Instead of allowing a third-party cookie to follow you across unrelated sites, Firefox isolates that cookie to the site where it was created. A service can still function in the context where it was used, but it has a harder time correlating your activity elsewhere.

This combination is a practical compromise: meaningful protection against common cross-site tracking techniques without making every embedded component subject to the most aggressive blocking rule. If you need a login, checkout, form, comment system, upload control or video player to work reliably, begin here and tighten the setting only after testing.

What changes when you choose Strict

Strict keeps the protections in Standard and adds more aggressive blocking. Mozilla describes it as blocking tracking content in all windows and blocking all cross-site cookies, in addition to social-media trackers, cryptominers and fingerprinters.

The extra blocking can affect a page even when the visible feature is not an advertisement. A video player may load a tracking component from a different domain; a social comment widget may depend on a third-party script; a payment or login flow may open a cross-site window that expects cookies. If that resource or cookie is blocked, the feature can fail, remain blank or repeatedly ask you to sign in.

Strict is therefore a good choice for people who accept occasional troubleshooting in exchange for stronger default isolation. It is not a universal “best” setting, and no current source establishes a single probability that a site will break under Strict.

Firefox desktop protection levels compared

Firefox choice What Mozilla says it blocks Compatibility guidance
Standard Social-media trackers, cross-site tracking cookies (other third-party cookies are isolated), cryptominers and fingerprinters on all sites; tracking content in Private Windows. Total Cookie Protection is enabled by default. Best starting point when you want built-in privacy with fewer compatibility surprises.
Strict Social-media trackers, all cross-site cookies, tracking content in all windows, cryptominers and fingerprinters. Stronger blocking. Test important embeds, sign-ins, forms, payments, comments and videos.
Custom Lets you choose which tracker and script categories to block. Custom exposes WebCompat exception controls. Useful if you understand each category and want a deliberate privacy/compatibility trade-off.
Per-site exception Turns ETP off for the current site through the address-bar shield and adds that site to the exception list. Use this for a single failing site rather than weakening protection globally.

How to choose a setting for your browsing pattern

Choose Standard when reliability matters

Use Standard if you regularly use business portals, school systems, banking sites, shopping checkouts or media services and do not want to diagnose embedded-content failures. It still blocks several high-impact tracker classes and isolates cookies, while limiting tracking-content blocking to Private Windows.

Choose Strict when you can test and make exceptions

Strict fits a privacy-first setup in which you are willing to inspect a broken feature and allow one site if necessary. Test the sites you rely on immediately after changing the level, while you still remember which setting changed.

Choose Custom for category-by-category control

Custom is appropriate for experienced users who can explain why a particular tracker or script category is enabled or blocked. A setting that looks minor can have a large effect when a site has coupled an essential action to a third-party resource.

Set ETP safely in Firefox desktop

Change the global protection level

  1. Open Firefox and select the application menu button (the three horizontal lines).
  2. Open Settings, then select Privacy & Security.
  3. In Enhanced Tracking Protection, choose Standard, Strict or Custom.
  4. If you choose Custom, review each tracker, cookie and content category before saving. Do not assume that every checkbox affects only advertising; some categories control resources used by embedded features.
  5. Visit your essential sites in a new tab and exercise the actions you actually need: sign in, submit a form, upload a file, play a video and complete a payment flow where relevant.

Firefox’s labels and the exact placement of controls can change between versions. If a label differs, use the Settings search field for “Enhanced Tracking Protection” rather than guessing at a similarly named privacy option.

Allow one site without changing the global level

  1. Open the affected page in Firefox desktop.
  2. Select the shield icon beside the address bar.
  3. Turn off Enhanced Tracking Protection for that site.
  4. Let Firefox reload the page, then repeat the feature that failed.
  5. Use the same shield panel to turn protection back on when appropriate.

This exception is local to the site. It does not turn ETP off for other domains, so a single problematic embed does not require a browser-wide privacy downgrade.

What to do when a site seems broken

Do not start by disabling every blocker. First identify the exact symptom, because a failed login has a different likely cause from a missing advertisement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Authentication: the page loops back to sign-in, loses a session or cannot open a login popup.
  • Forms and payments: a submit button does nothing, a checkout frame is blank or a confirmation never returns.
  • Media and embeds: a video, social post, map or comment panel does not load.
  • Uploads and controls: an upload button is missing, a control is mispositioned or a script-driven menu fails.
  • General symptoms: unusually slow loading, a crash or a page that remains partially rendered.
  1. Record the failing feature and the page address. Confirm that the same feature is still broken after a normal reload.
  2. Open the address-bar shield and disable ETP for that site only.
  3. Allow the reload to finish and test the same action, not a different page.
  4. If it works, decide whether the site is important enough to keep as an exception. You can instead restore ETP and report the compatibility problem to Mozilla’s Webcompat team.
  5. If nothing changes, turn ETP back on. The exception is a diagnostic test, not proof that tracking protection caused the failure; continue with the site’s normal troubleshooting, such as checking credentials, permissions, network errors or the site’s own status page.

Why blocking a tracker can break an unrelated feature

A browser does not know that a network request is “only analytics” if the site has made its application logic depend on that request. MDN explains that tracking protection can prevent a tracker resource from loading and consequently stop a callback from running. If navigation, form submission or another action waits for that callback, the action can fail even though tracking is not part of the user-visible task.

  • Navy Blue with Silver

The robust design is a fallback path: essential navigation and transactions should complete when analytics is unavailable. A site that requires an analytics response before enabling its checkout button is fragile by design. From the browser side, a site-specific exception can restore the function, but it also permits the trackers that ETP was meant to block on that domain.

How common is breakage?

A USENIX Security Symposium study published in 2023 analyzed 18,932 reviews and issue reports about blocking tools. The researchers organized the reports into 38 specific breakage types across seven broad categories, including slow pages, lost authenticated sessions, broken upload buttons, mispositioned elements and crashes.

The same study surveyed 46 users of dedicated blocking tools and 49 users of browsers with built-in blocking. Those are study samples, not estimates of all browser users, all websites or the likelihood that your next page will fail. They show the range of problems people have reported, not a universal breakage rate for Firefox Strict.

Using Custom and WebCompat exceptions deliberately

Custom gives you more control than the two presets, but it also makes mistakes easier. Change one category at a time and test the same pages after each change. Keep a short note of what you changed so you can reverse it.

Firefox exposes WebCompat exception controls in Strict and Custom. These exceptions are intended for known compatibility cases. Disabling WebCompat exceptions may improve privacy in a narrow sense, but Mozilla warns that doing so can stop features such as video playback or login popups. Treat that control as an advanced trade-off, not an automatic hardening step.

A maintenance routine that avoids surprises

  • After a Firefox update, check that your selected ETP level is still the one you intended.
  • When a site changes its login or checkout, retest before adding a new exception; a problem may be temporary or unrelated to ETP.
  • Keep the exception list limited to sites you use and understand. Remove old entries for services you no longer visit.
  • When reporting a problem, include the failing feature, your ETP level and whether the shield-panel test changed the result. That information helps compatibility teams reproduce the issue.

Answers to common questions

Does Standard remove every advertisement?

No. ETP targets tracking technologies and third-party resources; it is not a guarantee that every ad format will be hidden. Visible advertising can remain when it does not match the blocked tracker categories or when an ad-blocking extension is not configured to remove it.

Is it safer to disable ETP globally if one page fails?

No. Mozilla’s troubleshooting approach is to disable ETP for the affected site, reload and test. A site-specific exception limits the privacy cost to that domain and leaves protection enabled elsewhere.

Should I use Strict in every Private Window?

That depends on your tolerance for testing and exceptions. Standard already blocks tracking content in Private Windows, while Strict applies that blocking in all windows and also blocks all cross-site cookies. Strict may add protection, but it can also affect embedded content you need, so verify those workflows before relying on it.
