There is no single endpoint security product that is best for every business. The right choice depends on what you need to prevent, whether you need endpoint detection and response (EDR), which devices you manage, and whether your team can investigate and respond to alerts. The seven platforms below are candidates to evaluate, not a ranked list.
Independent tests offer useful but limited comparisons: they assess particular products under particular conditions, and malware-file protection, malicious-URL protection, and EDR validation measure different things. Use the results to guide a shortlist, then confirm current editions and run a pilot on representative devices.

What endpoint security does—and when you need EDR
Endpoint security protects devices such as laptops, desktops, servers, and mobile devices from threats. Endpoint protection, often called EPP, focuses on prevention: for example, detecting or blocking malicious files and other threats. EDR adds monitoring and investigation capabilities to help security teams understand suspicious activity and respond to incidents. Depending on the product and edition, response can include actions such as containing a device or remediating a threat.
These capabilities are related, but they are not interchangeable. A strong result in a malware-file test does not establish how well a product investigates an attack, and an EDR validation does not provide a universal measure of everyday malware protection. Check the exact edition and its included features rather than assuming every product name covers both prevention and response.
How to read the 2026 test results
Malware-file protection
AV-Comparatives’ March 2026 enterprise malware protection test assessed protection against malicious files before, during, or after execution. Its results included Elastic at 100%, CrowdStrike at 99.7%, Bitdefender at 99.5%, Microsoft at 99.3%, ESET at 99.2%, and Sophos at 96.6% — each figure is from this AV-Comparatives test in 2026, not a universal product rating. The test table also reported zero false alarms on common business software for every tested product. Those findings apply to the test’s scope and conditions; they do not predict an organization’s own false-alert rate or outcomes on its particular devices and applications.
Malicious-URL protection
A separate AV-Comparatives business security factsheet covers a real-world protection test using 200 malicious-URL cases in March–April 2026. This is a different measure from protection against malicious files. The available factsheet information establishes the test’s scope, but does not provide comparable results here to rank the seven candidates by URL protection.

EDR validation
AV-Comparatives’ 2026 EDR Detection Validation evaluated seven enterprise cybersecurity solutions under advanced threat scenarios. The page names Bitdefender GravityZone Business Security Enterprise and ESET PROTECT Elite among the products in the validation. A separate 2025 Endpoint Prevention & Response test describes EPP, EDR, and XDR evaluations against targeted threats, including advanced persistent threats. These test descriptions establish that evaluations took place; they do not establish a complete winner list or results for every candidate discussed below.

| Candidate | What the available evidence establishes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Defender for Endpoint | AV-Comparatives reported 99.3% in its 2026 enterprise malware protection test. Microsoft describes coverage across Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and IoT. Microsoft says Plan 1 includes foundational antimalware, attack surface reduction, device controls, network protection, and related controls; Plan 2 adds EDR, exposure management, automatic attack disruption, threat intelligence, and sandbox/deep analysis. Microsoft lists Plan 1 as included in Microsoft 365 E3 and Plan 2 in Microsoft 365 E5, subject to plan conditions. | Confirm current plan entitlements, prerequisites, OS coverage for your devices, and whether your existing Microsoft subscription includes the features you need. |
| CrowdStrike Falcon | AV-Comparatives reported 99.7% in its 2026 enterprise malware protection test. CrowdStrike describes Falcon components including Falcon Prevent next-generation antivirus, Falcon Insight XDR, USB device control, mobile security, firewall management, forensics, and Falcon Complete MDR. | Verify which components are in the proposed package, supported operating systems, add-on requirements, and the scope and terms of any managed response service. |
| Bitdefender GravityZone | GravityZone Business Security Premium appears in AV-Comparatives’ business malware-test material. GravityZone Business Security Enterprise is named in the 2026 EDR Detection Validation. These are different editions and should not be treated as the same configuration. | Confirm which edition is being quoted and whether it includes the prevention, detection, investigation, and response capabilities you require. |
| ESET PROTECT | ESET PROTECT Entry appears in the business malware-test material; ESET PROTECT Elite is named in the 2026 EDR Detection Validation. Entry and Elite are distinct configurations. | Check the quoted tier’s coverage, operating-system support, and included EDR and response functions. |
| Sophos Intercept X Advanced | It was included in AV-Comparatives’ business malware protection testing, with a 96.6% result in that 2026 test. That figure describes only the test result, not general effectiveness across customer environments. | Confirm the current product package, available response capabilities, supported platforms, and whether any managed service is separately scoped. |
| SentinelOne Singularity Endpoint | SentinelOne describes Singularity Endpoint as combining EPP, EDR, and automated remediation, including containment, rollback, and remediation functions. The cited current AV-Comparatives business tests do not provide comparable independent results for SentinelOne. | Validate the described functions in the specific edition, and assess how its workflows and supported devices fit your team and estate. |
| Elastic | Elastic was included in AV-Comparatives’ 2026 enterprise malware protection test, with a 100% result in that test. The result alone does not establish a complete feature comparison or suitability for a particular organization’s needs. | Check the exact product and edition, deployment model, endpoint coverage, support, and the independent test scope before comparing it with other candidates. |
How to choose between endpoint protection and EDR
Start with the risk and operating model you actually need. A business that needs core prevention across a known device fleet has a different evaluation from one that needs investigators to trace suspicious activity and coordinate response. An EDR feature set also creates operational work: someone must review alerts, investigate incidents, and take action, either internally or through a service with clearly defined coverage.
- Prevention: Compare test results only when the test scope and date are clear. Malware-file protection, malicious-URL blocking, and attack-simulation results answer different questions.
- Detection and response: Confirm whether EDR, investigation tools, automatic remediation, or rollback are included in the exact edition or sold separately.
- Device coverage: Match supported operating systems and device types against your real fleet, including servers, mobile devices, and IoT where relevant.
- Administration and integrations: Evaluate the management console, policy workflow, deployment process, and integration needs such as SIEM, APIs, identity, or XDR. Make sure your team can operate the product.
- Staffing and service: Distinguish self-managed software from managed detection and response. Verify service hours, what devices and incidents are covered, response responsibilities, and contract terms.
- Licensing and total cost: Compare equivalent editions and contract terms. Account for seat minimums, servers, add-ons, data retention, support, and any useful entitlements in subscriptions you already own. The available evidence does not establish comparable prices across these vendors.
How to run a useful endpoint security pilot
A lab result cannot tell you whether a product will disrupt your applications, overwhelm your team with alerts, or fit your deployment process. Test the leading candidates in a controlled pilot before rolling them out broadly.
