Which 4 Google Apps Should Never Have Been Shut Down?

Google retired Reader, Inbox, Play Music and Podcasts for different reasons. Their migration paths helped users move data, but could not preserve every app’s distinct workflow.

Google Reader, Inbox by Gmail, Google Play Music and Google Podcasts each served a distinct habit that a later Google product did not necessarily preserve as a separate experience. Google cited declining use, product consolidation or a migration to another service when it retired them. Calling these apps ones that “should never” have closed is a judgment—not a conclusion established by Google’s shutdown notices—but their histories show what users lost and what Google offered in its place.

Why these four apps belong on Google’s graveyard list

These four services are a useful cross-section of Google’s shutdown decisions: one was retired after Google said its use had declined, one was folded into Gmail, and two were succeeded by YouTube products. In each case, Google announced a route forward, but moving data or adopting a successor is not the same as preserving the original service’s identity or workflow.

The case for keeping them is strongest when framed around the jobs they did well: following feeds in one place, managing email around priorities and time, listening to a personal music library, and subscribing to podcasts without tying the experience to a broader video platform. That does not prove their replacements were worse for every user; it explains why the closures disappointed people who relied on those particular workflows.

1. Google Reader: a simple home for web feeds

Why Google shut it down

On March 13, 2013, Google Software Engineer Alan Green announced that Reader would close on July 1. He cited declining usage and Google’s decision to concentrate effort on fewer products. Google gave users a three-month sunset period and pointed them to Google Takeout to preserve subscription data. The farewell notice said that subscription data would be deleted from Google’s servers after closure. Google Reader’s shutdown announcement

What the closure meant for readers

Reader organized updates from websites into a single, regularly refreshed feed. Its appeal was not just a list of subscriptions: it gave readers a focused way to check many publishers without visiting each site or relying on a social feed to surface new posts. Google’s notice explained how to export subscriptions, but an export preserves a list of feeds, not the familiar service that gathered and presented them.

Reader is the clearest candidate for “should never have been shut down” because the stated reason was declining usage, not that the underlying need had disappeared. Still, the announcement does not establish how many people depended on Reader or whether maintaining it would have been practical for Google.

2. Inbox by Gmail: email organized around what matters next

Why Google shut it down

Google announced on September 12, 2018 that Inbox would close at the end of March 2019. Product Manager Matthew Izatt described it as an experimental home for ideas such as snoozing, Smart Reply, Nudges and high-priority notifications. Google said popular Inbox experiences had been added to Gmail, offered a transition guide and noted that messages were already available in Gmail. Google’s Inbox shutdown announcement

What Gmail preserved—and what it did not

Google presented the closure as a way to focus on Gmail while carrying useful Inbox ideas into the larger service. That made the transition less about abandoning email features entirely than about ending Inbox as a distinct product. People who valued its particular interface and way of organizing attention still lost that separate experience, even if some individual features appeared in Gmail.

That distinction matters: a feature migrating is not the same as a whole workflow migrating. Google’s announcement supports the claim that popular experiences were added to Gmail, but it does not establish that every Inbox feature or the exact feel of using Inbox was reproduced there.

3. Google Play Music: a personal library in a streaming era

Why Google moved users to YouTube Music

Google announced on August 4, 2020 that YouTube Music would replace Google Play Music by December 2020. The company said users could transfer music libraries, personal taste preferences and playlists. Access ended in stages: users in New Zealand and South Africa began losing access in September, with other global markets following in October. Google said playlists, uploads, purchases and likes would be held through December to make transfers easier. Google’s Play Music transition announcement

Why the migration was not simply a name change

Play Music mattered to listeners who wanted their own saved or uploaded music alongside a streaming service. Google offered a transfer path for important library information, but its announcement did not claim that every part of Play Music was identical to YouTube Music. The transition therefore solved a practical problem—moving selected data—without establishing that every listener’s old arrangement or preferred way of using the service would carry over unchanged.

Google’s notice is evidence of the migration offer and timeline, not a feature-by-feature comparison. It supports a case for regret when a listener valued Play Music’s particular mix of personal library and service, but it cannot establish that YouTube Music was an inferior replacement for all users.

4. Google Podcasts: subscriptions that could move elsewhere

What Google announced

In 2023, Google announced that Google Podcasts would stop in 2024 and that it would help users move their podcasts to YouTube Music. The announcement described a migration tool and the ability to add RSS feeds in YouTube Music. For listeners who preferred another platform, Google offered an OPML file of show subscriptions to import into an app that supports the format. The announcement was published in French. Google’s Google Podcasts transition announcement

Why an export option mattered

Unlike a migration that points only to another Google service, an OPML export gave listeners a way to take their show subscriptions to a compatible app elsewhere. That is a meaningful concession: subscriptions are portable data, even when the original listening interface is not. Google’s announcement describes the export and migration paths, but does not establish that YouTube Music reproduced Google Podcasts’ full experience.

The case for keeping Google Podcasts rests on its role as a focused podcast app and the friction involved in changing listening habits. The available announcement does not provide enough detail to compare the old app and its successor feature by feature, so the strongest conclusion is about the loss of a distinct product, not proof that every listener lost functionality.

What these shutdowns have in common

App Google’s stated reason or framing What Google offered What the announcement does not establish
Google Reader Declining usage and a focus on fewer products Three months before closure; Google Takeout for subscription data Whether an export could preserve the service’s reading workflow
Inbox by Gmail An experiment whose popular experiences were being added to Gmail A transition guide; messages were already available in Gmail That Gmail reproduced Inbox as a distinct product or preserved every part of its experience
Google Play Music YouTube Music would replace it by December 2020 Transfer of libraries, taste preferences and playlists; saved data held through December That the two services were feature-for-feature identical
Google Podcasts Google would end the service in 2024 and direct users toward YouTube Music A migration tool, RSS-feed support in YouTube Music and OPML export for compatible apps That the successor recreated the original app’s complete experience

Across the four closures, Google emphasized consolidation and ways to carry information forward. Those measures can reduce the cost of switching, but they do not necessarily preserve a product’s focus, interface or place in a user’s routine. That is why “should never have shut down” is best understood as an argument about product value and user choice, rather than a fact that the announcements themselves can prove.
