For FDM optical-illusion prints, the best setting depends on where the pattern’s fine features lie. Lower layer height can sharpen detail in the vertical direction; nozzle diameter and perimeter generation matter for narrow features across the print surface. Cooling and speed need to suit the filament and geometry. There is no universal profile for every illusion, so check the slicer preview for missing lines before printing.
Start by identifying the kind of detail you need
FDM prints build up successive layers, so detail can be limited in two directions. Layer height affects vertical (Z) resolution. Nozzle diameter and extrusion width affect the XY plane. A setting that improves one direction will not necessarily improve the other.

| Where the fine feature lies | Settings to examine | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Vertical surfaces, slopes, or changes in height | Layer height | Smaller layers can show more vertical detail, but take longer to print. |
| Narrow ridges, channels, or walls in the print’s XY plane | Nozzle diameter, extrusion width, and thin-wall handling | A feature narrower than one extrusion width may be omitted. |
These are general FDM principles, not a tested recipe for a particular illusion model. The model’s orientation, printer, slicer, nozzle, and filament all affect the outcome.
Choose a layer height for vertical detail
Prusa Research identifies layer height as the main factor affecting print time and vertical resolution. A smaller layer height can better represent vertical changes, but each reduction adds layers and increases print time. Its guidance gives 0.10 mm as an example of a layer height that adds detail, while noting that the gains at 0.07 or 0.05 mm are relatively minor compared with the extra time. These are manufacturer guidance values, not measurements of optical-illusion print quality. Prusa Research: Layers and perimeters

- 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use
As a starting experiment, compare your usual compatible profile with one around 0.10–0.15 mm, if those heights are supported by your printer and nozzle profile. This is not a guaranteed optimum. Change only the layer-height setting first so you can judge its effect, and follow the profile’s guidance for first-layer height and calibration.
Do not confuse a maximum layer-height guideline with a fine-detail target. Prusa gives a general ceiling below 80% of nozzle diameter; for a 0.4 mm nozzle, that is about 0.32 mm. The ceiling is not a recommendation to print fine details at that height.

Use nozzle and perimeter settings for XY features
Reducing layer height will not rescue a narrow line or channel that lies flat across the build plate. Prusa Research distinguishes XY resolution from vertical resolution and points to nozzle diameter as the relevant dimension. If an illusion depends on very narrow in-plane ridges, a smaller compatible nozzle may help the slicer represent them, but results depend on the printer, extrusion-width settings, and actual feature dimensions. Check that the printer supports the nozzle and use a matching slicer profile rather than assuming any smaller nozzle will work better.

In PrusaSlicer, the Detect thin walls option can generate a single perimeter to capture some small details. It cannot guarantee that every fine feature will print: walls thinner than one extrusion width may still be ignored. PrusaSlicer’s Arachne perimeter generator automatically adjusts extrusion width for thin walls and is the default described in Prusa’s documentation; other slicers may use different controls or behavior. After slicing, inspect the preview at the locations where the illusion has fine lines or walls. If a feature is absent from the preview, changing print speed or cooling will not make the slicer generate it. Revisit the model’s feature width, nozzle and extrusion-width compatibility, and thin-wall or perimeter settings.
Tune cooling to the filament and geometry
Cooling helps fresh extrusion solidify before later movement distorts it. Bridges and overhangs can benefit from faster solidification, which can reduce sag. But stronger cooling is not universally better: Prusa warns that with some materials it can contribute to warping or layer separation. Use the filament’s recommended profile as the starting point, especially when printing materials that need reduced or carefully controlled fan cooling.

Prusa’s cooling controls include fan ranges, bridge and overhang fan speed, and slow-down behavior for short layers. Small features may leave little time for each layer to cool, so the slicer can slow the print to allow more time. Inspect the sliced result and adjust the material-appropriate cooling settings rather than applying maximum fan to every filament. Prusa Research: Cooling

Set speed with flow limits in mind
The speed entered for a feature is not necessarily the speed the printer will achieve. Actual speed can be constrained by the configured feature speed, maximum volumetric speed, overhang and cooling rules, and minimum-layer-time behavior. Maximum volumetric speed depends on both the hotend and filament, so a single mm/s recommendation would be misleading without knowing the printer and material.

Prusa recommends starting conservatively when setting maximum volumetric speed and increasing it gradually. Under-extrusion or poor layer adhesion are warning signs that the flow limit may be too high. For an illusion print, first preserve the profile’s material and flow limits; tune speed only after checking the sliced feature paths and cooling behavior. Prusa Research: Max volumetric speed
A practical setting-check sequence
- Inspect the model and preview. Identify whether its fine features are vertical or lie in the XY plane, then confirm those paths appear after slicing.
- Try a lower layer height for Z detail. Compare your normal profile with a compatible setting around 0.10–0.15 mm; treat this as an experiment, not a universal target.
- Address missing XY features. Check nozzle compatibility, extrusion width, and the slicer’s thin-wall or perimeter options. Do not expect lower layer height to solve an in-plane feature-width problem.
- Use the filament’s cooling profile. Review bridge and overhang cooling and short-layer slowdown; avoid indiscriminate maximum fan.
- Keep speed within the printer-and-filament flow limit. Start conservatively and change one relevant setting at a time so the result is easier to diagnose.
What these settings cannot establish
Without a named model, printer, slicer, nozzle, and filament, there is no evidence-based way to specify one best profile or promise a particular resolution. These recommendations concern FDM printing; they do not establish settings for resin printers. Treat the manufacturer values above as general guidance and let the model preview and compatible material profile guide the final choices.
