1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe best 360 camera depends on what you need after recording: the GoPro MAX2 is WIRED’s pick for most people, the Insta360 X5 is its low-light choice, the Insta360 X4 Air is its beginner pick, and the DJI Osmo 360 is its audio-accessories pick. TechRadar instead names the X5 its best 360 action camera. These are attributed editorial judgments, not a single objective ranking. Choose by the footage, handling and editing workflow you care about most.
What matters most when choosing a 360 camera?
A 360 camera records the scene around it, letting you choose the framing later. You can crop a panoramic recording into a conventional horizontal or vertical video, which is useful when you cannot predict where the action will happen. The key question is how much usable detail remains after that crop—not just the largest resolution printed in a specification.

Resolution and frame rate are only part of the decision. Low-light image quality, lens protection, mounting options, audio, stabilization, single-lens recording modes and the time and hardware needed to edit large files can all matter more for a particular shoot.
How the leading choices compare
| Camera | Best fit in the cited coverage | Published 360 video modes or figures | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Insta360 X6 | Buyers prioritizing high-resolution 360 modes | Manufacturer lists 8K at up to 50 fps, 6K at up to 60 fps and 4K at up to 120 fps. | Modes are manufacturer specifications, not independent verification. Insta360 identifies it as its flagship 8K 360 camera. |
| Insta360 X5 | Low-light shooting, according to WIRED; best 360 action camera, according to TechRadar | TechRadar reports 8K/30 360 video and up to 72 MP stills. | TechRadar’s guide also reports 200 g weight, a 208-minute battery-life figure, replaceable lenses and 15 m waterproofing. Attribute these to that guide; battery duration is not a guarantee for every use. |
| Insta360 X4 Air | Beginners, according to WIRED | not stated in the cited WIRED guide | WIRED’s label is an editorial recommendation, not a claim that it suits every beginner. |
| DJI Osmo 360 | Audio accessories, according to WIRED | DJI lists panoramic 8K at up to 50 fps, 6K at up to 60 fps and 4K at up to 100 fps. | DJI lists up to 100 minutes of 8K/30 panoramic recording under its specified lab conditions, or up to 120 minutes with Endurance mode. The manufacturer cautions that actual runtime varies by scenario and region. |
| GoPro MAX2 | Most people, according to WIRED | not stated in the cited WIRED guide | WIRED highlights its mounting options and user-replaceable lens covers, while noting audio and low-light trade-offs across the field. |
| Insta360 X4 | Existing owners deciding whether to upgrade | not stated in the cited TechRadar guide | TechRadar says the upgrade benefit from X4 to X5 is limited for existing X4 owners. |
Which camera suits your kind of shooting?
For an all-round action and travel camera
Start with the GoPro MAX2 if you want an easy-to-interpret recommendation: WIRED names it best for most people and points to its mounting versatility and twist-off, user-replaceable lens covers. Those features can matter when a camera will be mounted in different ways or exposed to knocks. WIRED also identifies audio and low-light trade-offs, so consider whether those are central to your footage before settling on it.

For low light or more editing latitude
WIRED recommends the Insta360 X5 for low light, and TechRadar names it its best 360 action camera. TechRadar reports 8K/30 360 video and describes its sensors as larger than those in earlier models. Treat those as review-context claims, not proof that every scene will look better: lighting, motion, settings and the reframing crop affect the result. TechRadar also flags large-file editing demands, so check that your phone or computer can handle the footage comfortably.
For high frame-rate options on paper
The Insta360 X6 and DJI Osmo 360 both have manufacturer-listed 8K modes up to 50 fps, but their top listed 4K frame rates differ: up to 120 fps for X6 and up to 100 fps for Osmo 360. These are mode ceilings, not evidence that the cameras produce identical image quality or that every resolution and frame rate can be selected together. Check the camera’s current mode table for the combination you intend to use.
For a first 360 camera
WIRED calls the Insta360 X4 Air its beginner pick. That is a useful starting point if you want an editorially recommended entry into the category, but the cited guide’s label alone does not establish its current price, included accessories or precise video modes. Compare the full kit and workflow you would actually use before buying.

For existing Insta360 X4 owners
Do not assume that a newer generation automatically justifies replacing a camera that already meets your needs. TechRadar explicitly describes the X5 upgrade as limited for existing X4 owners. A worthwhile upgrade depends on whether a specific improvement—such as the X5 features you need—changes the footage or workflow you can achieve.
For audio accessories
WIRED names the DJI Osmo 360 its best pick for audio accessories. If clear speech or sound capture is important, compare the exact accessory support and mounting requirements for your intended setup; a reviewer’s category award does not guarantee that a particular microphone or accessory is compatible.
What the resolution and battery figures do—and do not—tell you
Resolution after reframing
An 8K panoramic recording is not the same thing as an 8K conventional video crop. A reframed clip uses only part of the 360 image, so a higher-resolution source can leave more detail for a normal horizontal or vertical export. The amount that remains depends on how tightly you crop and the export settings. Compare sample reframed clips in the format you plan to publish, rather than treating the headline resolution as a direct measure of finished-video quality.

The X6 and Osmo 360 figures above come from their manufacturers. Their matching 8K maximum frame-rate figure does not establish matching detail, color, stabilization or low-light performance. For X5, TechRadar’s 8K/30 figure is a guide-reported specification; do not compare it as though it were the same measurement as a manufacturer’s complete mode list.
Runtime is conditional
DJI’s up-to-100-minute figure applies to 8K/30 panoramic recording under the manufacturer’s specified lab conditions; its up-to-120-minute Endurance-mode figure is a separate condition. DJI says actual runtime can vary by scenario and region. TechRadar reports a 208-minute battery-life figure for X5, but that guide figure should not be read as a directly comparable result without matching test conditions and recording modes.

Lens protection and repair
WIRED reports that GoPro MAX2 has user-replaceable lens covers. TechRadar describes the Insta360 X5 as having replaceable lenses and 15 m waterproofing. Confirm the current manufacturer guidance for the exact model and shooting conditions before relying on a camera’s water resistance or assuming a lens part can be replaced in the same way. Replaceable protection can reduce the consequences of a scratch, but it does not make a lens immune to damage.

Mounting and sound
Mounting flexibility can be decisive for action footage. WIRED highlights MAX2’s multiple mounting interfaces, but compatibility depends on the specific mount standard and accessory; check the exact mount before ordering. For audio, consider whether built-in recording is sufficient or whether your setup needs an external accessory, and verify supported accessories for the camera and recording mode.
Editing workflow
360 footage must usually be reviewed and reframed before it becomes a conventional clip. Decide whether you expect to edit on a phone, a desktop computer or both, and test a representative file if possible. TechRadar warns that X5’s high-resolution files can demand capable hardware. A camera that captures excellent source footage may still be a poor fit if exporting and sharing it is frustrating.
Quick Recap
How to make the final choice
- Choose the output first. Decide whether you will publish reframed horizontal or vertical clips, retain full 360 video, or use both.
- Match the camera to your priority. Use the attributed editorial picks as starting points: MAX2 for WIRED’s broad recommendation, X5 for its low-light pick, X4 Air for its beginner pick, or Osmo 360 for its audio-accessories pick.
- Check the exact recording mode. Confirm the resolution and frame rate are available together in the mode you need, rather than relying on separate maximum figures.
- Check the whole setup. Verify lens protection, waterproofing conditions, mounts, audio accessories and included items for the exact camera and bundle in your market.
- Account for editing. Make sure your phone or computer can handle the files and the reframing workflow you intend to use.
- Compare current local prices and stock. Prices, bundles and availability change, and the cited comparisons do not establish a live price.
