Store LiveKit production secrets in the runtime’s secret mechanism—not in source control or a container image. For a LiveKit Cloud agent, use Cloud’s agent secrets management; for a self-hosted agent, inject credentials through your deployment platform. Keep agent credentials distinct from the LiveKit Server’s own configuration, which can be supplied in a protected YAML file or through LIVEKIT_CONFIG.
Choose storage based on what you are configuring
LiveKit deployments involve two separate configuration layers: the application agent that connects to LiveKit, and the LiveKit Server itself. Credentials such as API keys, database passwords, and tokens are sensitive; inject them at runtime through a secret mechanism. Ordinary, non-secret settings can be managed through deployment configuration or environment-driven configuration.

For LiveKit Cloud agents, use managed agent secrets
Add ordinary agent credentials through LiveKit Cloud’s agent secrets management. Cloud encrypts and injects those values into the agent container at runtime, avoiding the need to create your own injection path for the Cloud agent. If an integration requires a file rather than an environment variable—for example, a JSON credential—use the supported mounted-secret-file approach described in the secrets-management guide.

Cloud supplies LIVEKIT_URL, LIVEKIT_API_KEY, and LIVEKIT_API_SECRET to its agents automatically. These are not ordinary agent secrets that you can set or modify in the agent secret store. Do not copy them into your own image or try to override them as user-managed secrets. LiveKit’s secrets-management guide; LiveKit’s builds and Dockerfiles guide.

Account for shared secrets across deployments
As documented on October 4, 2026, LiveKit Cloud agent secrets are shared across production and non-production deployments. If staging needs a different credential, LiveKit documents using LIVEKIT_AGENT_DEPLOYMENT to select deployment-prefixed credential names—for example, a staging-specific API key. The documentation describes isolated per-deployment secrets as planned, not as a generally available feature. LiveKit’s non-production deployments guide.
For self-hosted agents, inject credentials at runtime
Configure agent credentials as environment variables through the deployment platform that runs the agent. Keep development, staging, and production credentials separate, and use separate LiveKit instances or deployments where appropriate. Avoid placing real credentials in tracked files or baking them into a container image. LiveKit’s self-hosted deployment guide.

Environment variables are suitable for ordinary credentials. When an integration requires a file, use the deployment platform’s secure file-mount mechanism rather than copying the credential into the image. The correct mechanism depends on your platform; LiveKit’s documentation supports the runtime-delivery distinction but does not rank third-party secret managers.

The server has its own configuration path: pass a YAML file with --config, or supply its body through LIVEKIT_CONFIG. LiveKit’s production example includes a keys section for API key-secret pairs and recommends Redis. If the YAML contains real keys, protect the file and its distribution as sensitive: storing credentials in a configuration file does not make that file safe to expose. LiveKit’s server options documentation recommends environment variables for the API key and secret. Whichever supported configuration path you use, restrict access to the values and avoid committing them to a repository. LiveKit’s server options guide.
Plan TLS and Redis as part of server operations
For self-hosted server TLS, LiveKit’s deployment guidance calls for a domain, a certificate from a trusted certificate authority, and TLS termination through a load balancer or reverse proxy. In Kubernetes, the Kubernetes guide documents storing TLS certificate and key files in a Secret. The deployment guide also recommends Redis for production; these are server infrastructure and configuration concerns, not agent-secret settings. Keep secrets out of container images and version control
Do not copy .env or other .env* files into a production image, and do not commit files containing live credentials. LiveKit’s Cloud build guidance says to inject user secrets at runtime; Cloud supplies its own connection variables. A local environment file can still be useful for development, but it is not a production secret store. LiveKit’s builds and Dockerfiles guide; LiveKit’s secrets-management guide.

Best Value
Use a production deployment checklist
- Identify whether each value belongs to the agent or the LiveKit Server; configure it in the corresponding layer.
- Deliver credentials at runtime through Cloud agent secrets, the self-hosting platform’s environment configuration, or Kubernetes Secrets for sensitive files.
- Keep production credentials separate from development and staging; for Cloud agents, account for the documented shared-secret behavior and deployment-prefixed key workaround.
- Exclude
.env*files and credentials from container build contexts and version control. - Restrict access to server YAML files if they contain a
keysmapping. - For Kubernetes, keep Secret objects in the deployment namespace and plan a pod restart or rollout when configuration changes.
