There is no reliable, universal list of eight companies that accept cryptocurrency at their own checkout worldwide. Payment routes change by country and may mean direct checkout, a payment processor, a merchant-configured gateway, or a gift card. The eight examples below are useful places to check—not a guarantee that each currently takes crypto directly or in every region.
What “accepts cryptocurrency” can mean
Before choosing a retailer, identify the payment route. A company may take crypto directly, rely on a processor that handles the payment, offer crypto only through some merchants on its commerce platform, or appear in a service that sells gift cards for crypto. Those options differ in supported coins, geographic availability, settlement and refund handling.

- Direct checkout: The merchant’s own checkout offers a cryptocurrency payment option.
- Processor checkout: A provider processes a crypto payment for a merchant; the provider and merchant determine which assets and regions are supported.
- Platform-enabled checkout: A commerce platform lets individual merchants activate compatible crypto gateways. The platform itself is not necessarily accepting crypto for every store.
- Gift card: A separate service lets you buy a retailer’s gift card using crypto. This does not mean the retailer accepts crypto at its own checkout.
Eight company examples—and what to verify
These names appear in a payment-provider directory or company roundups, but the available evidence does not establish an active, direct crypto option for every company, worldwide. Check the company’s own checkout or help pages before relying on any listing.
| Company | What the available listing establishes | What to check before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Newegg | Listed in BitPay’s merchant directory as a direct-pay merchant. | Whether the crypto option appears for your country and order, which assets are accepted, and the applicable payment and refund terms. |
| Microsoft | Named in a 2026 Ledger overview; that overview links to a mix of official, media and provider pages, so it is a lead rather than confirmation of current availability. | Whether Microsoft currently offers a crypto option for the specific product, account and region. |
| AT&T | Named in a 2026 Ledger overview; the listing does not by itself verify a current direct checkout route. | Whether the payment option is available for your bill or purchase, and whether it is direct or handled by a provider. |
| Twitch | Named in a 2026 Ledger overview; current route and availability are not established by that secondary listing. | Whether crypto is currently offered for the specific payment, subscription or region. |
| Tesla | Named in a 2026 Ledger overview; the listing alone does not prove a current crypto payment option. | Whether the specific item and location have a crypto checkout option and which asset or provider is involved. |
| Shopify merchants | Shopify documents supported third-party crypto payment methods that merchants can activate. This is a platform capability, not acceptance by every Shopify store. | Whether the individual store has enabled a gateway, what it accepts, and whether the payment option is available in your region. |
| Overstock | Named in a separate company overview updated March 6, 2026. That overview contains claims that conflict with current status or route distinctions, so it does not verify an active route. | Whether the company currently offers crypto at its own checkout, rather than through a third party or gift card. |
| Expedia | Named in the same overview updated March 6, 2026; the listing is not sufficient evidence of a current direct payment route. | Whether crypto is accepted for the specific booking and region, and whether the option is direct or mediated by a provider. |
BitPay’s directory is a useful discovery tool, but its direct merchant listings and gift-card offering are separate. A retailer listed for gift cards should not be treated as a merchant that accepts crypto at checkout. Likewise, secondary roundups can become outdated or blur direct and indirect payment routes. See BitPay’s merchant directory and confirm the route with the merchant.

Shopify shows why the gateway matters
Shopify says merchants can activate supported third-party cryptocurrency payment methods in their admin settings. Its documentation lists providers including Solana Pay, Crypto.com, BitPay, DePay, OpenNode, Strike, Lunu, Bit2Me Commerce and IBEX Pay. Which coins are available depends on the provider; examples include Bitcoin and Bitcoin Lightning through some providers. Settlement arrangements also vary, with examples that include USD or other fiat currencies. A merchant must enable a provider, so the presence of Shopify checkout does not mean that store takes crypto.
Shopify also flags practical considerations: third-party transaction fees may apply; slower settlement can contribute to overselling during flash sales; and Shopify does not automatically refund crypto payments. Merchants should check regional acceptability and their chosen provider’s terms before enabling a method. Read Shopify’s cryptocurrency payment-provider documentation.

How shopping with Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency works
- Check the merchant’s own checkout or support page. Confirm that the option is currently offered for the exact purchase and your country.
- Identify the route and provider. Determine whether the merchant takes payment directly, uses a processor, or is only available through a gift-card service.
- Confirm the asset and network. A provider may accept Bitcoin, Lightning payments or other supported assets; do not assume one coin or network works wherever crypto is mentioned.
- Review the total, timing and refund terms. Follow the checkout instructions and verify the amount and payment window. Check how cancellations, failed transactions and refunds are handled before sending funds.
- Keep the confirmation. Save the order confirmation and any provider receipt so you can refer to the transaction if the merchant or processor needs to resolve an issue.
Where to spend Bitcoin without mistaking a gift card for direct acceptance
If a retailer does not show crypto at checkout, a crypto-funded gift card may be another route. BitPay promotes gift cards as a separate way to spend crypto, distinct from its merchant directory. Check the card’s country, currency, retailer restrictions and redemption conditions before purchase. Buying a gift card with Bitcoin is a purchase from the gift-card service; it does not establish that the retailer accepts Bitcoin directly. BitPay’s directory and gift-card information can help identify possibilities, but confirm the specific offer before proceeding.

Crypto payment options can depend on the merchant, processor, selected asset, product and buyer’s region. A provider’s payment method may be available to a merchant but not enabled in that store, and a directory entry may describe a different route from the one a shopper expects. Check the checkout immediately before ordering and treat older company announcements and broad roundups as leads, not proof of current acceptance.

For wider lists, Ledger’s 2026 overview names companies including Microsoft, AT&T, Twitch, Tesla, Newegg and Shopify, but combines different kinds of links and does not establish that each route is currently active: Ledger’s company overview. Another overview updated March 6, 2026 names Microsoft, Overstock, Expedia, CheapAir and Shopify, but its claims conflict with current status or route distinctions: Ledger’s Bitcoin payment overview. Use either as a starting point for verification, not as a definitive current list.
