For a repair, start with India’s official Right to Repair portal and confirm the service details with the provider. If the device is beyond repair or you no longer need it, look for a manufacturer take-back route or a CPCB-registered recycler—and contact them first to check that they accept your exact item in your area. The national portals are useful starting points, not a verified directory of local drop-off points or household pickups.
How to find a repair service
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs’ Right to Repair India portal provides a starting point for brand service, warranty, and spare-parts information. Its about page says consumers can search by company or product for warranty and service terms, post-sales support, service-network links, third-party providers, and genuine spare prices.

- Search for the manufacturer or product on the portal, then check the warranty status and whether the listed service option is authorized.
- Ask the provider to diagnose the fault and give you a written estimate before approving work. Confirm part authenticity, expected turnaround, service location, and any warranty on the repair.
- If comparing an independent shop, ask how it protects your data, what parts it plans to use, and what support or warranty it offers. There is no uniform India-wide independent-shop policy established by the cited portal.
- Consider self-repair only if the task suits your skills and the device. The portal includes self-repair in its framework, but it does not prescribe universal tools or endorse a particular kit.
The portal’s sector listing includes mobile phones, tablets, laptops, batteries, and printers, as well as consumer durables such as refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners. Brand listings and service information can change, so check the live portal and confirm details directly with the provider.

The CPCB E-Waste Management System is the national portal under the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022. It describes registration of producers, recyclers, refurbishers, and manufacturers, and explains how producers meet extended producer responsibility obligations using certificates from registered recyclers. That establishes a formal registration system; it does not by itself show where a household can drop off a device or arrange pickup.

- Check the live CPCB system for the prospective recycler and contact it to confirm its registration is current.
- Describe the exact device, its condition, and whether it contains a battery or data-bearing storage. Ask whether it accepts household quantities and any accessories you plan to hand over.
- Confirm whether you must deliver the item or whether collection is available in your area. Ask about any fee and whether you will receive a receipt or information about data destruction.
- Before handing over a working item, ask the manufacturer or service provider whether repair, refurbishment, or reuse is an option.
Do not assume that every registered recycler accepts every type or condition of equipment, offers household pickup, or provides data-destruction documentation. Confirm the specific handoff directly. The national source does not establish particular resale or donation services, so treat those as possibilities to verify rather than guaranteed routes.

| Repair options | Recycling options |
|---|---|
| Whether the provider is authorized and what that means for warranty coverage | Evidence that registration is current |
| Diagnostic fee and total quoted cost | Accepted device categories and condition |
| Genuine-part availability and repair time | Whether it accepts household quantities and offers local drop-off or pickup |
| Service location and warranty on the repair | Fees, battery and data-storage handling, and confirmation of handover |
For searches such as “where can I recycle old electronics near me?” or “where can I repair an old phone in India?”, use the official portals to identify a route, then verify current local availability with the brand, recycler, or relevant local authority. A national listing alone does not confirm a nearby collection point or service.
