On Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED, plug a wired headset microphone into the console’s 3.5 mm headphone/microphone jack. Use a headset with a four-pole CTIA plug, and check that the game supports voice chat. Switch 2 also has that jack, plus a built-in microphone for GameChat.
Where do I plug a microphone into a Nintendo Switch?
On the original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED, connect a wired headset with a microphone to the console’s 3.5 mm headphone/microphone jack. Nintendo specifies a four-pole CTIA stereo mini plug for this jack. The connector standard is described in Nintendo’s headphone-microphone jack guidance.

Look for a headset plug with four metal contact sections, often called TRRS. The plug must follow CTIA wiring; a plug that merely fits the socket is not proof that its microphone will work. Nintendo does not guarantee operation of every third-party accessory.

A wired gaming headset with a 3.5 mm CTIA microphone is the straightforward choice. For example, PowerA’s headset manual describes a compatible product family using a 3.5 mm TRRS CTIA plug. That is product documentation, not a guarantee for every headset or game.

How does the answer differ on Switch 2?
Use the built-in mic for GameChat
Switch 2 has a built-in microphone, so you do not need a separate mic to start voice chat through GameChat. Nintendo says the system adapts to surroundings and filters background noise and game audio. GameChat audio-only voice chat does not require a USB camera; it can include up to 12 participants using the built-in mic. See Nintendo’s GameChat guide.
Connect an external mic or headset
For an external mic on Switch 2, Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance covers a device connected through the console’s USB-C port, a USB port on the dock, or the audio jack on the console or Switch 2 Pro Controller. For a wired headset using the audio jack, the specified standard remains a 3.5 mm four-pole CTIA plug. If a USB audio device is not detected, try another USB port. Bluetooth can provide listening audio, not GameChat mic input
A Bluetooth headset can let you hear other GameChat participants, but its microphone cannot be used as the voice input for Switch 2 GameChat. Use the built-in mic or a supported wired or USB input instead, as Nintendo explains in its microphone troubleshooting guidance.
Does a Switch have a microphone jack?
Yes. Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, and Switch 2 have a combined 3.5 mm headphone/microphone jack. It is on the console, so a compatible wired headset can be connected directly while playing handheld or tabletop. Nintendo’s support answer covers all four systems and specifies the four-pole CTIA standard: Nintendo support.

The presence of a jack does not mean every game will use it. Nintendo notes that accessory operation is not guaranteed for every product, and headset documentation also warns that microphone or chat support depends on the software title. Check the game’s own support information before assuming voice chat is available.
What does Switch 2 GameChat require?
Nintendo’s current GameChat FAQ says an active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required. It lists an open-access period without membership from June 5, 2025 through March 31, 2026; that period has ended. Check Nintendo’s GameChat FAQ for current access details.

For audio-only chat, no camera is required. The built-in microphone is available for voice chat, so a camera or separate mic is not a prerequisite.

Check that the game supports chat
A compatible plug cannot add voice chat to a game that does not support it. Confirm the title has microphone or chat features and follow its settings or support instructions. For Fortnite voice-chat questions, Nintendo directs players to Epic’s support information: Nintendo’s Fortnite support page.

Check the connection and mute control
- For a wired headset on Switch, confirm that its plug is a 3.5 mm four-pole CTIA type and is fully inserted into the console’s headphone/microphone jack.
- Check the headset’s mute switch or button. Some controls mute the microphone when pressed in; the behavior depends on the headset. PowerA’s manual documents a mute control on its headset.
- On Switch 2, reconnect a separate USB or jack-connected mic and try another USB port for a USB device that is not detected.
Check Switch 2 GameChat input settings
- Open System Settings > Audio.
- Check that the intended microphone is selected and raise input volume if needed.
- Choose Test Microphone and speak to check whether the system detects your voice.
- Make sure nothing is covering the built-in microphone. If using an external device, reconnect it and, for USB, try another port.

If Fortnite voice chat fails while docked
Epic specifically warns that Fortnite users may encounter voice-chat issues with a 3.5 mm headset while the console is docked. Its suggested alternatives for that scenario are a USB receiver, USB headset, or USB-to-3.5 mm adapter. This is Fortnite-specific guidance for docked play, not a general requirement for all games or Switch setups. See Epic’s Fortnite voice-chat troubleshooting page.
