To manage Microsoft Edge centrally in the cloud, open the Microsoft 365 admin center and go to Settings > Microsoft Edge. Use Group Policy for Windows domain or local policy administration, or Intune/MDM when that is your organization’s device-management route. After assigning settings, check edge://policy in a target browser to see what it actually received.

Choose the right place to manage Edge

The right management surface depends on whether you are assigning browser settings in Microsoft’s cloud service, applying Windows policy, or delivering settings through device management. These routes can coexist, so identify the policy source and intended scope before changing a setting.

Set up a cloud configuration policy

Microsoft documents the Edge management service in the Microsoft 365 admin center. Its configuration workflow covers policy basics, settings, extensions, assignments, and review.

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center and open Settings > Microsoft Edge.
  2. Create a configuration policy or open one you need to change.
  3. Choose the policy settings and platforms for the intended users or devices.
  4. Configure extension settings if needed, then assign the policy to the appropriate Microsoft Entra group.
  5. Review the configuration and create or save it, then verify the result on a target browser at edge://policy.

Microsoft’s setup documentation lists Edge version 115.0.1901.7 or later and the Microsoft Edge Administrator role as prerequisites. It lists Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android as supported operating systems, and says the service is unavailable to GCC plan customers. Tenant eligibility and role access therefore need to be checked rather than assumed. Microsoft Learn: Get started with configuration policies.

Configure Windows policies with Group Policy

For Windows policy administration, use Microsoft Edge administrative templates in Group Policy Editor. Mandatory settings take precedence over user preferences; recommended settings provide defaults that users can override.

  1. Install Microsoft Edge administrative templates for the Windows policy environment.
  2. Open Group Policy Editor and configure mandatory settings under Microsoft Edge.
  3. For user-overridable defaults, configure settings under Microsoft Edge – Default Settings (users can override).
  4. Open Edge on a target device and visit edge://policy to inspect the policies applied.

Microsoft’s Windows policy guidance describes the mandatory and recommended settings distinction and the browser-side verification step. Microsoft Learn: Configure Microsoft Edge for Windows with policy settings.

Understand which policy wins

Cloud configuration policies can merge when their assignments do not conflict. If two cloud policies conflict, the Edge management service uses their configured priority; 0 is the highest priority. Intune configuration policies do not use this same priority mechanism.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A device-level Group Policy or MDM setting can override a conflicting setting from the Edge management service. If a cloud setting appears ineffective, inspect the applied policy source and scope before editing or reassigning the cloud policy. Microsoft Learn: Get started with configuration policies.

Verify a policy on the browser or device

In Edge, open edge://policy. This page shows the policies Edge has applied and is the most direct browser-side check when a setting is missing or behaving unexpectedly.

  • If the expected policy appears, inspect its value and source to determine which management route supplied it.
  • If it is absent, check that the user or device is included in the assignment or profile scope and that the relevant cloud or MDM configuration reached the target.
  • For MDM, verify the policy path and value in the device configuration. On Windows, Microsoft documents policy registry settings under SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge.

Microsoft’s MDM guidance recommends checking edge://policy and the device policy configuration when a setting is absent. Microsoft Learn: Configure Microsoft Edge using Mobile Device Management.

Keep service availability separate from the connection policy

The Edge management service’s listed operating-system availability is not the same as support for the Windows EdgeManagementEnabled policy. Microsoft lists the service for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android, while the separate policy is documented for Windows with Edge 115 or later and is not supported on macOS, Android, or iOS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

EdgeManagementEnabled is a mandatory Boolean policy controlling whether Edge attempts to connect to the management service. Microsoft says a browser restart is required for the policy to refresh. Microsoft Learn: EdgeManagementEnabled policy.

Apply extension settings at the right level

The Edge management service can set defaults across extensions and apply individual controls to selected extensions. An individual extension’s specific settings override profile-wide defaults, so use the extension-specific control when a general default is not the intended behavior. Microsoft Learn: Extensions management.
