Swiping up on the Pixel Camera viewfinder can reveal quick settings, but there is no confirmed, fixed set of six controls shared by every Pixel. A report on Pixel Camera 9.2 described flash, Top Shot, timer and aspect ratio in its swipe-up preferences sheet; Google’s current help documentation covers a broader set of camera settings without promising that same tray on every device. Here are six useful controls and where to look for them, with the access-path and model caveats made clear.
What does swiping up in Pixel Camera do?
In Photo mode, swipe up on the viewfinder to inspect the settings available on your phone. A December 2023 report about Pixel Camera 9.2 described a swipe-up preferences sheet with shortcuts such as flash, Top Shot, timer and ratio (9to5Google’s Pixel Camera 9.2 report). That is a version-specific account, not a guarantee about every Pixel or app release.

Google’s Camera app settings guide documents the controls below, but does not publish a universal six-item swipe-up list. If a control is missing from the swipe-up sheet, look for it in Camera settings or More settings instead of assuming you swiped incorrectly.
Six useful controls and where to find them
| Control | What it does | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Flash | Lets you change flash behavior for a photo. | Reported in the Pixel Camera 9.2 swipe-up sheet; Google also documents flash in Camera settings. |
| Top Shot | Provides a way to work with a series of moments around a photo, where supported. | Reported in the Pixel Camera 9.2 swipe-up sheet; availability and behavior depend on the device and app. |
| Timer | Delays capture so you can get into position or steady the phone. | Reported in the Pixel Camera 9.2 swipe-up sheet. Night Sight astrophotography also has a documented five-second timer. |
| Aspect ratio | Changes the image’s framing between a wide crop and the full image. | Reported in the Pixel Camera 9.2 swipe-up sheet; Google documents the choices in Camera settings. |
| RAW + JPEG | Saves a RAW file alongside a JPEG when enabled. | Deeper settings: enable RAW/JPEG control in Advanced on most models, then turn on RAW + JPEG. |
| Gridlines | Adds a grid overlay to help compose a shot. | Deeper settings: Settings, More settings, Grid type. |
Flash
Flash is one of the controls named in the Pixel Camera 9.2 swipe-up report. Google’s help page documents changing flash through Camera settings as well, so use that route if the shortcut is not present on your phone.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
Top Shot
Top Shot is also named in the version-specific swipe-up report. It is not established as a universal shortcut, and its availability or behavior can vary by Pixel model and Camera app release.
Timer
The timer is another reported swipe-up shortcut. Separately, Google documents a five-second countdown for Night Sight astrophotography: “Your phone will start a 5 second timer, which allows you to place your phone down on a steady surface facing the sky.” See Google’s low-light and night photography guidance. This specific countdown is for astrophotography, not proof that every timer control uses the same duration.
Rank #2
- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers

- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
Aspect ratio
Google documents two choices: Wide crop (16:9) and Full image (4:3). Open the Camera settings control and choose the ratio. The ratio changes framing or crop; it does not by itself change the camera sensor or guarantee a change in image quality.

RAW + JPEG
RAW + JPEG is a deeper setting, not a confirmed universal swipe-up shortcut. On most models, enable the RAW/JPEG control under Advanced, then turn on RAW + JPEG. Google notes a different setup path for Pixel 8 Pro, so follow the instructions for that model in its Camera settings guide.
Gridlines
To add or change the composition grid, open Camera settings, select More settings, then Grid type. Google documents this as a settings-menu option, not as a guaranteed item in the swipe-up sheet.
Don’t confuse the swipe-up sheet with viewfinder quick-access controls
Google also documents customizable quick-access controls in the viewfinder. You can configure up to four—two on each side—but this is a separate feature from the swipe-up preferences sheet. The count does not describe how many settings appear when you swipe up. For the setup route, use Google’s Camera app settings instructions.

Why options differ between Pixel phones
Camera features are not identical across Pixel models. Google’s settings documentation describes features and settings by device, while its high-quality photo guidance gives device-specific eligibility examples, including restrictions for Macro Focus and manual lens selection. Camera Looks, for example, are documented for Pixel 11 series, not as a general control for all Pixels.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Camera app release matters too: the four swipe-up examples above come from reporting on version 9.2, published in December 2023. Google’s current help page does not confirm that all four remain together in a swipe-up sheet on every current device.

- For aspect ratio, open the Camera settings control and choose Wide crop (16:9) or Full image (4:3).
- For gridlines, open Settings, then More settings, then Grid type.
- For RAW + JPEG, look under Advanced for the RAW/JPEG control; Pixel 8 Pro’s setup path differs.
- If the control still is not available, check the Pixel model and Camera app version against Google’s device-specific instructions. Feature eligibility can vary.
Swiping up inside the camera preview is distinct from the phone’s system navigation gestures. For opening and closing the app, see Camera app settings and Google Pixel Camera Help.
