Apache’s main configuration file is usually named httpd.conf, but there is no universal path. A source build commonly uses /usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf; Debian and Ubuntu packages normally organize configuration under /etc/apache2/; Fedora, CentOS and RHEL packages commonly use /etc/httpd/. The active virtual host may be in an included file rather than the main file. Locate the file Apache actually loads, create a name-based <VirtualHost> block, test it with a temporary hosts-file entry, and confirm the parsed result with apachectl -S or httpd.exe -S.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Why there is no single httpd.conf path
The conventional name is not a guarantee. Apache’s main configuration filename and location are set when Apache is compiled, and a startup option can override that choice with -f. The Apache documentation summarizes this plainly: the main configuration file is usually called httpd.conf. Package maintainers can also split the configuration into several files and change the default directory layout between releases.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That means finding a file named httpd.conf is only the first step. The file you open might not be the one used by the running service, and the virtual host you need may be loaded through one or more Include directives. Treat the running Apache configuration, not a familiar pathname, as the source of truth.
Common locations by operating system and installation method
| Installation | Typical places to inspect | What this means for a virtual host |
|---|---|---|
| Source-built Apache | /usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf is common; the configured ServerRoot and any -f startup override take precedence. |
The main file may contain the vhost directly or include another file beneath the Apache configuration directory. |
| Debian or Ubuntu package | /etc/apache2/, with per-site files normally in /etc/apache2/sites-available/ and enabled entries represented in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/. |
A site-specific file under sites-available is generally the appropriate editing location; it must be enabled through the distribution’s site mechanism. |
| Fedora, CentOS or RHEL package | /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf, with additional configuration commonly loaded from /etc/httpd/conf.d/. |
Place a site-specific .conf file in the included directory when that package layout loads it, or add an explicit Include from the main file. |
| Windows or a custom package | The installation’s conf directory and the arguments used by the service or httpd.exe. |
Do not assume a Unix layout. Confirm the active file and included directories from the service definition and Apache’s startup options. |
These are common arrangements, not promises. A vendor can relocate any of them, so use the verification steps below before editing.

Find the configuration Apache is actually using
Start with the service definition
Determine how Apache is started on the machine. A service definition, wrapper script or scheduled task may pass -f and select a nonstandard file. On Windows, inspect the service command line or the way httpd.exe is launched. On Unix-like systems, inspect the package’s service definition or startup script. The objective is to identify the configuration path supplied at startup rather than guessing from a directory listing.
Check the expected configuration directory
Once you know whether the installation is source-built, Debian-family, RHEL-family or custom, inspect the corresponding directory from the table. Look for the main file and for files ending in .conf. A vhost can be in a file whose name does not contain httpd, so search the complete included directory rather than only the conventional filename.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Trace included files
Open the main file and follow every Include directive. Included files are parsed as part of the same configuration, and nested includes can lead to the definition you need. Distribution layouts often use a global file plus a directory of site or module snippets. Editing a file that is not included has no effect, even if its contents look correct.

Use Apache’s parsed view as the final check
After you have a candidate file, run apachectl -S on Unix-like systems or httpd.exe -S on Windows. Apache documents these commands as a dump of the virtual-host addresses and names it parsed. The output identifies the file and line associated with each vhost, which quickly reveals that you edited the wrong file, omitted an Include, or selected the wrong port.
Decide where the virtual-host definition belongs
Keep site-specific directives in a site file whenever the package layout provides one. This separates a website from global settings and makes it easier to enable, disable or audit that site without changing unrelated defaults. On Debian or Ubuntu, that normally means creating the file in /etc/apache2/sites-available/ and using the distribution’s mechanism to represent the enabled site in sites-enabled. On RHEL-family systems, a separate .conf file in /etc/httpd/conf.d/ is appropriate when that directory is included. For a source build or custom installation, add the file wherever the active configuration explicitly includes it.
Before writing the block, decide the hostname, listening address and port, document-root directory, log locations and any access requirements. DNS does not have to be ready for an initial test; a temporary hosts-file mapping is sufficient. Use paths that exist on the server, and keep the path syntax appropriate to the platform.

Build a basic name-based virtual host
Create a site-specific file in a directory Apache actually includes. The following example shows the essential directives for a website on port 80:
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName www.example.test
ServerAlias example.test
DocumentRoot /var/www/example
ErrorLog /var/log/apache2/example-error.log
CustomLog /var/log/apache2/example-access.log combined
<Directory /var/www/example>
Require all granted
</Directory>
</VirtualHost>
Adapt every path to your installation. The log directory in this example follows a Debian-style location; another package may use a different log directory. On Windows, Apache’s configuration sections documentation specifies forward slashes in configuration paths, even when the underlying filesystem uses drive letters. For example, write C:/Apache24/htdocs/example rather than relying on backslashes.
What each directive controls
<VirtualHost *:80>: scopes the enclosed directives to requests received on every local address at port 80. Replace the address or port when the site listens elsewhere.ServerName: gives Apache the primary hostname to match in the request’sHostheader. Use the name visitors will send.ServerAlias: adds additional names that should select the same site. Add only names you intend to serve.DocumentRoot: selects the directory from which this vhost serves files. Confirm that the directory exists and contains the intended site.ErrorLogandCustomLog: keep errors and requests attributable to this site. Use a log path that the Apache service can create or write.<Directory>andRequire all granted: apply access rules to the document-root directory. This example permits Apache to serve it; tighten the rule when the content is private or restricted.
The block does not automatically provide TLS, proxying, authentication or application-specific rules. Add those only when the site needs them, and keep them inside the vhost or the appropriate configuration context.

Enable the file on each platform
Debian and Ubuntu
- Create the vhost file under
/etc/apache2/sites-available/, for example a file dedicated to the hostname. - Confirm that the file is syntactically complete and that its
DocumentRoot, logs and directory section use real paths. - Enable the site through the distribution’s site-enabling mechanism so an entry is represented under
/etc/apache2/sites-enabled/. Do not assume that merely saving a file insites-availableloads it. - Run
apachectl -Sand verify that the hostname, port and source filename appear in the parsed output. - Use the package’s normal syntax-check and reload procedure. The exact service command depends on the release and init system, so use the command documented for that host.
Fedora, CentOS and RHEL
- Place a site-specific
.conffile in/etc/httpd/conf.d/when the main configuration includes that directory, or add an explicitIncludefrom the active main file. - Check that the filename ends in
.confif the include pattern loads only that suffix. - Run
apachectl -Sto confirm that Apache parsed the new block and to see which vhost is first for the address and port. - Run the platform’s normal syntax check and reload procedure before testing requests.
Source builds and custom Unix installations
- Inspect the configured
ServerRootand startup arguments. A common source layout is/usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf, but the configured values win. - Create the site file in an included directory, or add an
Includedirective in the active main file. - Validate with
apachectl -S, then perform the installation’s documented syntax check and graceful reload or restart.
Windows
- Find the Apache installation’s
confdirectory and inspect the service definition or launch command for a nondefault-foption. - Create or edit an included configuration file, using forward slashes in paths.
- Run
httpd.exe -Sfrom the installation context. Check that the intended vhost and source file are listed. - Run the Windows installation’s normal configuration test and service reload or restart procedure.
Test a hostname before public DNS
When the server is not yet publicly reachable under its final name, use a temporary local hosts-file entry. Apache’s getting-started guidance identifies /etc/hosts on Unix-like systems and C:Windowssystem32driversetchosts on Windows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Choose the server address that should receive the test request.
- Add a line mapping that address to the vhost’s test hostname and any alias you want to exercise.
- Save the file with the required administrative privileges.
- Request the hostname in a browser or HTTP client from that same machine. The hostname, not merely the numeric address, is what supplies the
Hostheader used for vhost selection. - Remove the temporary entry when testing is complete or when public DNS becomes authoritative.
A hosts-file test isolates Apache selection from DNS propagation. If the request still reaches the wrong site, inspect the parsed vhost list, address and port before changing DNS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How Apache chooses among name-based virtual hosts
Name-based virtual hosting considers the request’s local address and port together with its HTTP Host header. Apache first narrows the candidates to the address-and-port combination declared by <VirtualHost>, then compares the requested name with ServerName and ServerAlias.
Best Value
If no declared name matches, the first applicable name-based vhost for that address and port becomes the primary or default vhost. Consequently, file ordering can affect an unmatched request, and duplicate ServerName or ServerAlias values are a configuration error in practice: one definition will win according to the parsed order while another appears to be ignored. The -S output is the reliable way to see that order.
Make sure the port in the block is the port that actually receives the request. A vhost on *:80 cannot answer a request arriving on another port simply because the hostname is correct. Likewise, declaring a hostname as an alias does not make DNS point to the server; it only tells Apache how to route a request that has already arrived.
Validate syntax and the parsed result before going live
- Run the platform’s normal Apache syntax check. A syntax check catches malformed sections, misspelled directives and invalid paths before a reload can disrupt the running service.
- Run
apachectl -Sorhttpd.exe -S. Confirm the expected address and port, everyServerNameand alias, the source filename and the line number. - Look for warnings about duplicate names, an unexpected first vhost or a file that is absent from the include chain.
- Reload or restart using the host’s standard service procedure only after the checks pass.
- Test each hostname, including aliases, and inspect the site-specific error and access logs when a response is unexpected.
A successful syntax check alone does not prove that the intended vhost will answer. The parsed map and a request carrying the correct hostname are both required.
Troubleshoot the failures that occur most often
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
The new site never appears in -S output. |
The file is outside the include chain, the site was not enabled, or Apache started with a different -f file. |
Inspect startup arguments, follow Include directives and verify the distribution’s enablement representation. |
| The hostname shows another website. | The Host name does not match, the address or port differs, or the request fell through to the first vhost. |
Compare the request hostname and port with ServerName, ServerAlias and the first entry shown by -S. |
| An alias works while the primary name does not. | The primary name is missing or misspelled in ServerName, or the client is not sending the name you expect. |
Check the exact spelling and test the hostname itself rather than only the numeric address. |
| Apache refuses to reload after the edit. | A syntax error, invalid directive context or unusable path was introduced. | Run the platform syntax check and read the reported file and line number before reloading again. |
| The vhost is selected but files return an access error. | The DocumentRoot is wrong or the directory’s access section does not permit the intended requests. |
Verify the directory path, the matching <Directory> section and the access rule appropriate for the content. |
| Requests work locally but not under the public name. | Local hosts-file routing works, while public DNS or the external address is different. | Remove or compare the temporary hosts entry, verify the public name resolves to the server address and retest with the real hostname. |
| Logs remain empty. | The request is reaching a different vhost, the log paths are invalid, or Apache cannot write the files. | Use -S to confirm selection, check the configured paths and inspect the global service error output. |
Operational practices that prevent configuration mistakes
- Keep one site’s directives in one clearly named file and avoid changing global defaults for a single website.
- Record which main file and include directory are active, especially on custom or source-built installations.
- Give each site distinct error and access logs so a failed request can be tied to the vhost that handled it.
- Review duplicate
ServerNameandServerAliasvalues whenever a site is added or renamed. - Use a temporary hosts-file mapping for pre-DNS testing, then remove it to avoid masking a DNS mistake.
- Always perform a syntax check and inspect the parsed vhost map before a reload. A configuration that parses but selects the wrong first vhost still needs correction.
- Use
Require all grantedonly for content that should be publicly served; private directories need a more restrictive rule.
A compact repeatable workflow
- Identify the startup configuration and any
-foverride. - Locate the main file and follow its
Includedirectives. - Choose the package’s site-specific file location.
- Create a complete
<VirtualHost>block with the correct address, port, names, document root, logs and directory rule. - Enable or include that file according to the installation layout.
- Run the syntax check and
apachectl -Sorhttpd.exe -S. - Map the test hostname in the local hosts file if DNS is not ready.
- Reload using the platform’s normal service procedure and test every declared name.
The important distinction is between a file that exists and a file Apache parses. Once the include chain, vhost order and hostname mapping are visible in Apache’s own output, configuring additional sites becomes a controlled editing task rather than a search for a magical universal httpd.conf location.
