Search for material-focused terms such as linen texture, fabric texture, woven texture, subtle texture or textured background. Choose a portrait image with enough resolution and a relatively quiet area behind the Lock Screen clock, download it, then add it through Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos.
Both services offer large free catalogs, but they are discovery libraries rather than iPhone-specific wallpaper stores. You still need to check the image crop, contrast, resolution and current license before using a file—especially if you plan to redistribute it or use it in a commercial project.

Best places to find free textured iPhone wallpapers
Start with the two image libraries that provide the clearest free-download paths. Their search tools make it possible to find cloth, paper, stone, wood, grain and other surfaces without paying for a wallpaper subscription.

Unsplash is a strong choice when you want editorial-looking textures, natural materials or neutral backgrounds. Its license says images may be downloaded and used free for personal or commercial projects without required permission or attribution, although attribution is appreciated. The license has important limits: you may not sell an image without significant modification or compile images to recreate a competing service.

Useful Unsplash search language includes linen texture, woven texture, natural fiber and textured background. A concrete example in the catalog is an image titled “A textured beige fabric background,” published November 29, 2025. Its tags include linen and woven-texture terms, making it a practical starting point for a warm, understated Lock Screen.
Pexels
Pexels is useful when you want more filtering during discovery. Its wallpaper area supports phone-oriented browsing and filters for orientation, resolution and color. Select portrait orientation first, then narrow the color or visual mood. Pexels describes images as free to download and use under the Pexels License, with no attribution required.
Pexels gives approximate guidance that an image around 1170 × 2532 pixels or larger can fit modern phones. Treat that as general guidance, not a guarantee for every iPhone model: the final crop depends on the device, wallpaper effect and the image’s aspect ratio.
Apple’s built-in wallpaper gallery
If you prefer not to download a file, Apple’s wallpaper gallery includes built-in categories and a route to select a custom photo. The gallery is better for choosing a finished Apple design than for searching specifically for linen, fabric or other tactile surfaces, but it is a useful alternative when you want a wallpaper that is already integrated with iOS.
Search terms that produce better texture results
Search for the surface first, then add a color, finish or mood. Material words are more reliable than a broad search for “wallpaper,” which can return busy illustrations, collages and landscape photographs.

Combining terms produces more targeted results: linen texture beige, woven paper neutral, stone texture dark or subtle grain wallpaper. These are practical query patterns rather than guarantees that every exact phrase has a dedicated collection.
How to choose a texture that works on an iPhone screen
A beautiful source image can become an impractical wallpaper if the clock, widgets or app icons disappear into it. Evaluate the image as a phone layout, not only as a photograph.
Use portrait framing and adequate resolution
Portrait images reduce the amount of cropping required on a phone. Prefer the largest available download when several sizes are offered. The Pexels guidance of roughly 1170 × 2532 pixels or larger is a useful starting point for current phones, but compare the image’s proportions with your own iPhone and preview the crop before committing.
Leave visual space for the Lock Screen clock
The upper portion of the Lock Screen contains the clock and, depending on your setup, widgets. Look for a relatively even or low-detail area in that region. High-contrast threads, sharp stone cracks, text and bright highlights directly behind the clock can reduce legibility.
Check the Home Screen separately
App icons cover much of the Home Screen. A texture that looks perfect above the clock may become too busy once rows of icons are added. Preview both screens and consider using the same photo with a darker, lighter or blurred Home Screen treatment if iOS offers that option for your setup.

Consider color and accessibility
Very light textures can make dark text and icons easier to read, while very dark images generally work better with light interface elements. If you use increased contrast, reduced transparency or other accessibility settings, preview the wallpaper with those settings enabled; the perceived balance can change.

- Open Unsplash or Pexels and search with a material term plus a color or mood.
- Apply portrait orientation and resolution filters where available, especially on Pexels.
- Open the individual image page rather than saving a thumbnail from a search grid.
- Check the image dimensions and inspect the composition for clock and icon placement.
- Read the current license information on that image platform before using the file outside your own phone.
- Use the platform’s download control and save the original or largest practical size to Photos or Files.
On Pexels, an optional editing flow can help you crop or adjust color before downloading. Editing is useful when the source is landscape-oriented or when you need extra empty space at the top, but avoid enlarging a small file aggressively: upscaling cannot restore detail that was never captured.
Set the downloaded image as your iPhone wallpaper
Apple’s current iPhone guide for iOS 26 uses this path. Exact labels and available effects can differ in other iOS versions.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Wallpaper.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper.
- Select Photos, then choose the downloaded texture.
- Adjust the crop and any available wallpaper effects while viewing the preview.
- Tap Add.
- Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair to use it on both screens, or customize the Home Screen separately.
If the image does not appear in Photos, verify that the download finished and that the file was saved to the Photos library rather than only to a browser’s download folder. From Files, use the share menu to save a compatible image to Photos, then repeat the wallpaper steps.

License boundaries you should understand
Personal use on your own phone
Downloading a texture for a personal iPhone background is usually straightforward under both platforms’ free-use licenses. Keep the image page and license details available if you might need to identify the source later, because catalog terms can change.
Redistributing images is different from using one as a wallpaper
Unsplash prohibits selling images without significant modification and prohibits compiling images to recreate a competing service. Pexels’ terms prohibit distributing material on a standalone basis as wallpapers or compiling it to replicate a competing service. Those restrictions matter if you plan to publish a wallpaper pack, run a wallpaper app or upload the original files for others to download. They do not change the basic process of setting one image as your own phone background.
People, property, trademarks and artwork
A platform’s copyright license does not automatically clear every recognizable element in a photograph. Unsplash cautions that additional rights may apply to recognizable people, private property, trademarks and other copyrighted works shown in an image. For a plain fabric or stone close-up, these concerns are less likely; for a texture photographed on branded packaging, artwork or a private interior, they can matter. Avoid assuming that a free image is cleared for unrelated commercial advertising.
Troubleshooting common wallpaper problems
The image looks blurry
Download the original or largest available file instead of a preview thumbnail. Confirm its pixel dimensions and avoid enlarging it far beyond its native size. If the source is already too small, choose another image rather than relying on heavy upscaling.
The crop cuts off the interesting texture
Choose a portrait source, reposition the crop in the wallpaper preview and look for a version with more margin around the subject. A simple, evenly distributed texture usually survives cropping better than a close-up with one important object at the edge.
The clock is hard to read
Pick a quieter area behind the clock, switch to a texture with lower contrast or edit the image to darken or lighten the upper portion. Check the preview with your actual clock style and widgets rather than judging the file by itself.
The Home Screen feels cluttered
Use a less detailed version of the image for the Home Screen, if your iOS options allow separate customization. Alternatively, choose a texture with broad tonal areas so icons remain distinct.
The menu labels do not match
Apple’s documented iOS 26 route is Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos. Earlier or later releases may use slightly different labels or offer different effects. If you cannot find the option, open Settings and search for “Wallpaper,” then look for the add-new-wallpaper control in the resulting page.

A practical decision checklist
- Is the image portrait-oriented or large enough to crop cleanly?
- Does the upper area leave the clock and widgets readable?
- Will app icons remain visible over the Home Screen treatment?
- Did you download from the image page at the largest practical size?
- Have you checked the current Unsplash or Pexels license?
- Are there recognizable people, logos, artwork or private property in the frame?
- Are you using the image only on your phone, or do you intend to redistribute it?
For the quickest result, search Pexels with portrait and resolution filters, or search Unsplash for a material phrase such as linen texture beige. Select a calm, high-resolution composition, save it to Photos and use Apple’s wallpaper workflow. That combination gives you a genuinely free textured background without treating a platform preview, a small image or a redistribution license as something it is not.
