Mac screenshots are normally saved on the Desktop, not in a mandatory folder named “Screenshots.” To find an existing capture, open Finder and select Desktop. To see or change the destination for future captures, press Shift-Command-5, open Options, and check Save to. You can keep using the Desktop, select a preset location, choose another folder, or send captures to the Clipboard instead of saving files.
Where macOS saves screenshots by default
Apple’s default destination is the Desktop. A newly saved image normally appears there with a filename in this pattern: Screen Shot [date] at [time]. There is no required system folder called “Screenshots”; if you have never changed the setting, look at the Desktop first.
How to find a screenshot you already took
- Open Finder.
- Select Desktop in the Finder sidebar, or choose Go > Desktop from the menu bar.
- Look for a file beginning with Screen Shot. Sort the folder by date if the Desktop contains many files.
If the image is not there, do not assume it was deleted. The Screenshot controls may be configured to use another destination, or the capture may have been copied to the Clipboard.
Check the current screenshot destination
The destination is shown in the Screenshot controls. This workflow is documented by Apple for macOS Mojave 10.14 and later.

- Press Shift-Command-5. A control bar appears near the bottom of the screen.
- Click Options.
- Read the location shown under Save to.
The selected item is where subsequent screenshots will be written. If it is a folder you do not recognize, choose Other Location to open a Finder-style picker and inspect the selected path.
Change where future screenshots are saved
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot.
- Click Options.
- Under Save to, select a listed destination, or choose Other Location.
- If you choose Other Location, navigate to the folder you want and confirm the selection.
- Take a test capture and verify that the new file appears in the chosen folder.
The setting controls future captures; it does not require you to create a folder with a particular name. You can make a folder such as “Screenshots” yourself and select it, but macOS does not create or require one by default.

What each destination means

Know which shortcut you used
- Shift-Command-3: captures the entire screen.
- Shift-Command-4: lets you select a region to capture.
- Shift-Command-5: opens the Screenshot controls, where you can choose capture options and the save destination.
Holding Control while using a screenshot shortcut sends the capture to the Clipboard instead of creating the usual saved file. In that case, paste it with Command-V into an app that accepts images. The floating thumbnail that appears after a capture can also be dragged to a chosen location. Control-clicking that thumbnail provides a Save to Clipboard option.
Why a screenshot may not be on the Desktop
The save location was changed
Open Shift-Command-5 > Options and inspect Save to. A previous workflow, another user, or an accidental menu selection may have pointed captures to a different folder.

The image went to the Clipboard
If you held Control, the capture may exist only in the Clipboard. Paste it into an image editor or document, then save it where you want.
You moved the floating thumbnail
After a capture, the thumbnail can be dragged to another folder, message, or application. The file will not remain on the Desktop if you move it elsewhere.

You are checking the wrong Mac user’s Desktop
Each macOS user account has its own Desktop and Screenshot settings. Confirm that Finder is showing the same account that took the capture.
A reliable workflow for organizing screenshots
- Create or choose the folder where you want captures kept.
- Set it through Shift-Command-5 > Options > Save to > Other Location.
- Use Shift-Command-3 or Shift-Command-4 for the actual capture.
- Open the selected folder immediately and confirm the file arrived.
- If the file is missing, repeat the destination check before taking another screenshot; this prevents searching several possible folders later.
Troubleshooting checklist
Nothing appears after Shift-Command-3 or Shift-Command-4
- Open Shift-Command-5 > Options and confirm that the destination is a writable folder rather than Clipboard.
- Check the selected folder in Finder, then sort by the most recent modification date.
- Look for the standard Screen Shot filename instead of searching only for a folder named “Screenshots.”
You expected a file but only pasted content works
The shortcut was probably used with Control, which sends the image to the Clipboard. Take the capture again without Control, or paste and save the existing Clipboard image manually.

You cannot find the folder chosen under Other Location
Return to Shift-Command-5 > Options and select Other Location again. Navigate through Finder rather than relying on memory of the folder name, then make a small test capture.
The thumbnail is visible but the file is not where expected
The thumbnail may still be awaiting an action or may have been dragged into another app or folder. Click it to open the capture, or drag it deliberately to the destination you want.

Bottom line
Start on the Desktop: that is macOS’s default screenshot location. If the file is elsewhere, use Shift-Command-5 > Options > Save to to identify or change the destination. Remember that Control sends a capture to the Clipboard, and the floating thumbnail can be moved manually.
