Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for a U.S. Senate seat in Michigan, has made opposition to the Iran war and criticism of Donald Trump part of a broader argument about household costs and U.S. spending overseas. He has called the war “illegal, unjustifiable, wrong,” while his campaign lists affordability, getting money out of politics and Medicare for All among its headline priorities.
What does Abdul El-Sayed think about the Iran war?
In an Aug. 7, 2026, Democracy Now! interview, El-Sayed called the war in Iran “illegal, unjustifiable, wrong.” He argued that the conflict demonstrated Iran’s leverage over global energy and said it had pushed gas prices to nearly $5 per gallon. That figure was his statement in the interview, not an independently verified price or a claim about the current price everywhere.
El-Sayed connects his opposition to the war with a broader argument against spending U.S. resources on overseas conflicts. Axios reported that he describes his “America First” position as keeping money at home rather than sending it to another country’s war machine. “I’m the most America First candidate in the country, proudly,” he said, while criticizing Trump’s use of the phrase as a show that, in El-Sayed’s view, sells people out.
His position on Israel and Palestinians
In the same interview, El-Sayed criticized AIPAC’s “absolutist vision” of U.S. foreign policy and said the organization supports continued unconditional U.S. military aid to Israel. He also said: “And I believe in equal rights to peace, dignity and self-determination for Palestinians and Jewish Israelis alike.” His statement explicitly includes both Palestinians and Jewish Israelis.

What has Abdul El-Sayed said about Trump?
In a Sept. 13 interview with CBS’s Face the Nation, El-Sayed referred to the person in the White House as “the barbarian” and argued that Trump’s policies were worsening affordability for households. He said Republicans had not addressed gas and grocery prices, tariffs, the Iran war or difficulty seeing a doctor. He also criticized Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers for not discussing gas prices that El-Sayed attributed to the Iran war. These were campaign criticisms and causal claims by El-Sayed, not independent findings established by the interview.
In more recent campaign rhetoric, El-Sayed said, “The problem is Donald Trump, and you don’t see much standing up to Donald Trump.” The Daily Beast reported that he connected the Iran war with high gas prices and used “Meek Rogers” as a jab at Rogers. The remarks reflect El-Sayed’s effort to make Trump and Republicans’ handling of costs central to the race.

Associated Press coverage of the 2026 contest describes Republican attacks focused on El-Sayed’s progressive views, association with commentator Hasan Piker and Muslim faith. It also describes El-Sayed’s effort to turn attention toward household expenses and overseas wars. That coverage provides election context; the existence of partisan attacks is not evidence that the allegations in them are true.

Medicare for All and taxes
On Face the Nation, El-Sayed described Medicare for All as a way to provide coverage from cradle to grave. He argued that wealthier people, including billionaires, should pay more in taxes to support it. These are his policy arguments; the interview records his position rather than independently establishing the plan’s costs or outcomes.
Potential work across party lines
El-Sayed said he saw room to work with Republican Sen. Josh Hawley on pro-union legislation and health care. That comment suggests he is willing to identify areas for potential cooperation even as he directs sharp criticism at Trump and the Republican campaign in Michigan.
