Find it in Firefox’s Downloads panel, or check the folder under Settings > General > Files and Applications > Downloads. If you clicked Copy instead, the image went to your clipboard—not to a file.
Find a screenshot you downloaded
- Open Firefox’s Downloads panel and look for the newest PNG. The filename follows a pattern like
Screenshot year-month-day at hour-minute-second Page title.png. - If you do not see it, open Settings > General > Files and Applications > Downloads and check the selected download folder.
- Open that folder in your computer’s file manager and search for the screenshot filename or sort by newest files.
Mozilla’s help article describes Firefox Screenshots downloads as using the browser’s default download location. For Firefox 141 and later, Mozilla Support moderator Nathan Giovannini stated on July 24, 2025, that screenshots are saved to the configured default download folder. If your setup uses a customized or managed location, confirm the actual path in Settings and the Downloads panel.

Download and Copy do different things
Download
Download saves a PNG file to Firefox’s configured download location. Use the Downloads panel to locate the entry and its folder.

Copy puts the screenshot on your clipboard. It does not create a file in the Downloads folder. Paste it into an application that accepts images if you want to use it; use Download if you need a saved PNG.

Choose where future screenshots are saved
In Firefox, open Settings > General > Files and Applications > Downloads. You can inspect or change the default download folder there. To choose a destination each time, enable Always ask you where to save files. Mozilla Support’s guidance says this applies to screenshots from Firefox 141 onward; check where a particular save actually lands, especially with customized or managed folders.
Advanced: separate screenshot folder preferences
A Mozilla Support forum solution describes the advanced preferences browser.screenshots.folderList and browser.screenshots.dir in about:config for setting a screenshot folder. This is a support-forum workaround, not the standard download-folder setting. The forum cautions that such back-door preferences are not fully supported or guaranteed to persist, and they may change. If you use them, record the existing values and verify the result after changing them.

Troubleshooting
- No screenshot appears in Downloads: Check whether you chose Copy rather than Download. A copied image is on the clipboard, not saved as a file.
- The PNG is not in the folder you expected: Check the folder shown in Firefox’s Downloads settings and the file’s entry in the Downloads panel. Firefox 141 and later are documented as using the default download location for screenshots, but forum users have reported unexpected destinations in some setups.
- You want a prompt for each save: Enable Always ask you where to save files in the Downloads settings, then check the destination prompted for the next screenshot.
- You need a dedicated screenshot folder: Prefer the standard download settings where possible. The
about:configpreferences are an advanced, less stable option described in a support forum.
