The pressure is real on both sides, but it takes different forms. Newcastle arrive at their first grand final in 25 years after a remarkable preliminary-final comeback; the Sydney Roosters face the expectation that comes with their record and a seven-year wait for another premiership. Neither context proves which team feels more pressure. Trent Robinson’s reported emphasis is narrower: the Roosters must prove their defensive resolve.
When and where is the grand final?
The Sydney Roosters play the Newcastle Knights at Accor Stadium on Sunday, 4 October 2026, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30pm AEDT, according to the NRL fixture listing.

Why Newcastle’s pressure is different
Newcastle’s place in the decider is already a striking turnaround. The Knights were the previous season’s wooden spooners, and their last grand final was in 2001, according to the NRL-hosted grand-final preview.

Newcastle trailed 14–6 at halftime, then scored three second-half tries after Phoenix Crossland was sent off, the NRL match report says. That comeback gives the Knights momentum, but it also means they are one win from ending a 25-year wait. The history raises the stakes; it does not tell us how the players experience them.

What the Roosters have to prove
The Roosters last reached a grand final in 2019, the NRL-hosted preview notes. Their immediate challenge is different from Newcastle’s: they are chasing their first premiership in seven years, and the accessible summary of a Sydney Morning Herald feature says Robinson framed their task around proving their defensive resolve.
That is the clearest reported pressure point—not a reliable account of Robinson’s private thoughts or a full explanation of his gesture. The available summary does not provide his exact interview passage, so it cannot support a direct quote or a more detailed interpretation.

So who has more pressure?
There is no objective way to measure which team carries more. Newcastle’s pressure comes with a long-awaited return and the chance to cap an unlikely rise; the Roosters’ comes with expectation and a seven-year gap since their last premiership. Those are competing contexts, not evidence that one side is more nervous or under greater strain.
The most useful distinction is between the stories around the teams and the job in front of them. For Newcastle, it is turning an extraordinary run into a title. For the Roosters, the reported test is whether their defence holds up when the season is on the line. The headline’s image of Robinson laughing and tapping his temple is not, on its own, enough to say what he meant.
