Apple Intelligence can process requests on your iPhone or, when Apple says a request needs more computing power, send relevant data to Private Cloud Compute (PCC). Apple has also announced that some demanding PCC workloads will run on Google Cloud systems. Apple says Apple—not the hosting provider—controls which PCC software devices trust. It does not publish a complete map showing where every consumer feature or request runs.
How Apple Intelligence decides where a request runs
Apple describes a two-tier system: on-device processing when possible, and PCC for requests that need greater computational capacity. Apple Support says the system analyzes whether a request can be handled on the device. The support material does not provide a feature-by-feature routing table or the thresholds behind that decision, and users are not given a manual control for choosing the route. Apple Support

That means Apple Intelligence does not necessarily keep every operation on the iPhone. A request handled on-device is processed locally; a request routed to PCC is processed on servers. Apple says PCC returns results to the device and does not retain them.

What Private Cloud Compute is—and what Apple says it protects
PCC is Apple’s server-based system for requests that need more capacity than a device can provide. Apple says it sends only data relevant to the request, does not store that data or make it accessible to Apple, and does not retain the result after it is returned. These are Apple’s descriptions and privacy commitments, not an independent audit conclusion.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Apple’s iPhone privacy guide describes several safeguards: Secure Enclave protection for server encryption keys, Secure Boot, a Trusted Execution Monitor, and device attestation of a PCC cluster before a request is sent. Apple also says independent privacy and security researchers can inspect PCC software. Those controls and inspection mechanisms do not, by themselves, establish an independent finding about the effectiveness of the current iOS 27 deployment. Apple’s iPhone privacy guide
Does Apple Intelligence use Google Cloud?
Yes, according to Apple’s June 8, 2026 announcement: Apple said it was extending PCC to Google Cloud systems using NVIDIA GPUs for some of its most demanding workloads, including agentic tool use and complex reasoning. Apple said protections would ramp up gradually during a summer preview period. The announcement does not establish that the rollout is fully complete, so it is more precise to say Apple has named Google Cloud as a PCC host than to imply every eligible request already uses it. Apple separately announced that its next generation of Apple Foundation Models was developed in collaboration with Google and uses Google’s Gemini models. Model collaboration and hosting are different facts: the model announcement does not, on its own, say where a particular request is processed. Apple says its PCC requirements continue to apply across hosting locations and that devices trust only PCC software cryptographically approved by Apple. In its account of the Google Cloud implementation, Apple names NVIDIA Confidential Computing with NVIDIA GPUs, Intel CPUs with TDX, and Google’s Titan chip. It also describes a cryptographically verifiable append-only ledger for PCC fleet hardware and attestation rooted in at least two trust sources for components that could be abused to exfiltrate data. These are technical claims made by Apple; the cited materials do not provide an independent assessment of their operation.

On-device models and PCC in Apple’s developer documentation
Apple’s developer documentation compares two model interfaces. These figures apply to those developer interfaces—not to every consumer feature, a universal routing rule, or a consumer usage quota.
| Developer model interface | Where it runs | Context size | Connectivity and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
SystemLanguageModel |
On-device | 4K | Works offline |
PrivateCloudComputeLanguageModel |
Private Cloud Compute | 32K | Requires connectivity, supports multiple reasoning levels, and has a daily request limit |
Apple advises developers to consider whether the on-device model is sufficient before choosing PCC. The 4K and 32K context sizes describe the documented interfaces, not a comparison of every Apple Intelligence feature. Apple Developer: “Adding server-side intelligence with Private Cloud Compute”

How to inspect PCC activity on an iPhone
- Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Apple Intelligence Report.
- Choose a reporting period: the last 15 minutes or the last 7 days.
- Export the activity report if you want to inspect or save it.
An empty report can mean that no PCC requests occurred during the selected period. The report offers a way to review recorded activity; it does not provide a complete public explanation of the routing rules or let you change them. Apple Support instructions
