It depends on what you mean by “content.” Files you open in the TV’s USB media player remain on the connected USB drive; recordings made with LG’s Time Machine feature are saved to attached USB storage on supported older models. LG’s general support guidance reviewed here does not establish one universal location for current webOS app files, caches, or streaming-service downloads.
Where does my LG TV store content?
There is no single storage location for every kind of content. The source and storage path differ for personal media, broadcast recordings, and material played through streaming apps.

Where are my USB files stored?
They stay on the USB device you connected. LG USA Support’s “LG TV – How to View Files from a USB Storage Device” page, dated September 10, 2026, says that connecting USB storage gives access on the TV screen to the device’s video, photo, and music content. Its instructions have you select the USB device and browse files in Media Player; they do not say the TV imports or copies those files into its internal storage. LG’s USB playback instructions
USB formats, capacity, and safe removal
For the setup described in its U.S. playback guide, LG advises using USB memory of 32 GB or less or an external hard drive of 2 TB or less, formatted as FAT32 or NTFS. Separate LG recognition guidance lists FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS, and cautions that file system, device power, capacity, and model support can affect recognition or smooth operation. - Use the TV’s eject option before removing a USB drive. LG warns that removing it without ejecting can cause errors.
- Formatting deletes the data on the USB device. Back up its files before formatting.
Where are LG TV recordings saved?
On TVs that support LG’s Time Machine feature, broadcast recordings are made to connected USB storage, not treated like ordinary files in the TV’s media library. LG specifies at least 4 GB of storage capacity and 1 GB of free space, and recommends a USB disk drive. Recording time depends on available storage; the Time Machine guide also gives a limit of up to 600 recordings per partition. Those figures apply to the feature as described in that guide, not to every LG TV or USB setup.
Time Machine availability is model-dependent. LG says models released in 2022 and later do not support it, and some 2021 models are also exceptions. Confirm support and regional availability in the manual for your exact TV before preparing a drive. Does my LG TV store apps or streaming downloads?
LG’s general support material cited above does not specify one storage location across current webOS models for app installations, caches, or offline downloads from streaming services. Do not assume that a show played in an app is saved as an ordinary file on a USB drive, or that every app stores downloads in the same place. The answer may depend on the TV model, software version, and service; consult the relevant model and app documentation for details.

Why might a USB drive not appear?
A USB device that is not recognized, or that plays files unreliably, may be affected by its file system, capacity, power requirements, or the TV’s model-specific support. LG’s general guidance lists FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS for recognition, while its playback guide describes a specific setup using FAT32 or NTFS. Check the exact TV manual and the device’s requirements rather than treating those formats or capacity recommendations as universal.
