Where Did Earth’s Water Come From? Asteroids, Comets and Earth’s Interior

Earth’s water likely came from a mix of water-bearing rocky material, possible cometary contributions and perhaps a small amount of nebular hydrogen. Isotope evidence supports—but does not prove—a single source or exact share.

Earth’s water most likely came from more than one source. Water-bearing rocky material—especially material resembling carbonaceous chondrites—has strong isotopic support as a major contributor. Comets could have added some water, and one 2018 model proposes a small contribution from hydrogen captured from the solar nebula. Volcanic outgassing later carried water from Earth’s interior to the surface. Scientists have not established exact source percentages or a single delivery timeline.

Why Earth’s water needs more than one explanation

Earth formed in the hot inner Solar System, where surface water was difficult to retain. Explaining today’s oceans therefore involves more than asking whether water existed in the early Solar System: it requires a plausible way to deliver hydrogen and water-bearing material to Earth, account for losses during heating and impacts, and explain how water held inside the planet reached the surface.

Earth’s growth involved repeated accretion and volatile loss. A 2022 review in Nature Reviews Earth & Environment places the Moon-forming impact at approximately 70–120 million years after Solar System formation and says more than 98% of Earth’s mass had accreted by then. That is a broad formation chronology, not a date for the oceans or proof that their water arrived in one event.

What isotope evidence can—and cannot—tell us

Hydrogen occurs mainly as ordinary hydrogen and the heavier isotope deuterium. The deuterium-to-hydrogen ratio, or D/H, can help compare water in Earth, meteorites and comets. Deuterium is more likely to be concentrated in water formed in cold environments, so a similar ratio can support a connection between two reservoirs.

NASA Science reports that Earth’s oceans contain about one deuterium atom for every 6,420 hydrogen atoms. But D/H is not a unique source label: comet measurements vary, and chemical processing in the early Solar System’s disk complicates attempts to infer where water formed. As the 2019 review of the debate explains, isotope evidence must be considered alongside other isotope systems and possible transport routes. A match supports a relationship; by itself, it does not identify a unique parent body, prove a delivery event, or establish how much water that source supplied.

How the proposed sources compare

Proposed source or process What supports it What remains uncertain
Water-bearing rocky bodies, including carbonaceous-chondrite-like material Water in carbonaceous chondrites has a D/H ratio described as a reasonable match for terrestrial water in the reviewed model literature. Dynamical scenarios also provide routes for outer Solar System material to reach the terrestrial planets. Similarity does not establish that the meteorites sampled are the exact source population, identify a particular asteroid or delivery event, or determine the fraction of Earth’s water they supplied.
Comets Some Jupiter-family comets have measured D/H values similar to Earth’s, making a cometary contribution plausible. Comets do not all have the same measured ratio. In the comparison reported by NASA Science, water from comet 67P had about three times the oceanic deuterium abundance.
Hydrogen from the solar nebula A 2018 model describes nebular hydrogen dissolving into magma oceans, reacting with iron and partly entering the core, with isotope fractionation between the core and mantle. NASA Astrobiology’s 2018 summary of the model estimates that about one in 100 of Earth’s water molecules traces to the nebula. This is a model-dependent estimate, not a direct measurement or evidence that nebular gas supplied most surface-ocean water.
Earth’s interior and volcanic outgassing Volcanic vapor could vent from the young planet and condense as rain. The 2018 model also discusses the possibility that several oceans’ worth of hydrogen reside in the mantle and core. Outgassing describes how water moves from Earth’s interior to its surface; it does not, by itself, explain the original source of the hydrogen.

Why asteroids are a leading explanation

Carbonaceous chondrites are meteorites that contain water-bearing minerals. Their hydrogen-isotope values are reasonably close to those of terrestrial water, which supports the idea that similar rocky bodies contributed substantially to Earth’s water. Reviewed accretion scenarios also offer ways for material from beyond Earth’s immediate neighborhood to be incorporated into the growing planet.

That evidence does not settle whether the water arrived mainly in a late addition of carbonaceous material or whether Earth inherited much of its hydrogen earlier, in different building blocks. Heating, impacts and accretion could remove or redistribute volatiles, and the meteorites available for study may not represent every population that contributed to Earth.

Did comets deliver Earth’s water?

They may have delivered some, but current evidence does not establish comets as the dominant source—or rule them out. Some measured comet ratios are close to Earth’s, while 67P’s water had about three times the oceanic deuterium abundance in NASA Science’s reported comparison. Neither one matching comet nor one differing comet can stand in for all comets.

NASA Science reports that researchers reanalyzed more than 16,000 Rosetta measurements of 67P because dust could affect observed isotope ratios. That work illustrates why comet measurements need careful interpretation; it does not turn the measurements of one comet into a final answer for Earth. The NASA account quoted planetary scientist Kathleen Mandt saying, “It was really starting to look like these comets played a major role in delivering water to Earth.” The statement reflects the context of that comet research, not a settled consensus that comets supplied most of Earth’s water.

How water moved from Earth’s interior to the oceans

Delivery and outgassing are different parts of the story. Water-bearing material could have added hydrogen to the growing Earth, while volcanic activity released water vapor from its interior. As the surface cooled, vapor could condense and fall as rain, contributing to surface water.

Some hydrogen may also have remained in the mantle or core. The 2018 model discusses several oceans’ worth of hydrogen potentially stored in those deep reservoirs. That possibility means Earth’s total water inventory is not the same thing as the water in its oceans; it also leaves open how much water cycled between the interior and surface over geological time.

What scientists have not settled

  • The exact share of Earth’s water supplied by asteroids, comets, nebular hydrogen or other early building blocks.
  • Whether sampled carbonaceous chondrites represent the material that actually contributed to Earth.
  • How much water arrived in later additions versus being inherited earlier during Earth’s growth.
  • The precise sequence and timing of delivery, volatile loss, interior storage and ocean formation.

Accretion reviews emphasize that volatile additions and losses occurred as Earth grew, and that early nebular volatiles largely escaped or were diluted. Because the sources, transport routes and losses are interconnected, the best-supported account remains a mixed-origin one rather than a single-source claim.
