Where Denisovan DNA Is Found in People Today

Papuan and Melanesian populations show the strongest Denisovan-related signal, while sampled Aeta groups also rank high. Lower signals occur across much of Asia, but study estimates differ and cannot predict an individual’s ancestry.

Denisovan-related DNA is most prominent in Papuan and other Oceanian and Melanesian populations, with especially high estimates reported for sampled Philippine Aeta groups. Smaller but detectable signals occur across many South, East and Southeast Asian populations. These are population-level findings, not a way to predict the ancestry of a particular person.

The short answer

People whose ancestors lived in Near Oceania carry the clearest Denisovan-related signal found in living populations. The strongest results in the cited studies are in Papuans and other Melanesians, and in some Philippine groups, especially Aeta (also spelled Ayta) populations. GenomeAsia also found high estimates in other Philippine Negrito samples, while groups from the Indonesian island of Flores and the Ati showed intermediate estimates.

Denisovan ancestry is not limited to Oceania. The same project detected lower but statistically significant signals in most of its sampled South, East and Southeast Asian populations. A 2016 analysis estimated 1.12% Denisovan ancestry for its Papuan sample and 0.10% for its Sherpa sample. A newer 2026 study, using a different design and ancestry definition, described around 4% Denisovan-derived contribution to Papuan genomes.

Those numbers should not be combined into a single ranking. Each comes from a particular set of genomes, reference sequences and statistical tests. They describe averages or model estimates for sampled populations, not the amount carried by every individual in those populations.

What “Denisovan DNA” means

Denisovans are an archaic human population identified primarily through ancient genomes recovered from Denisova Cave and related evidence. When scientists discuss Denisovan DNA in living people, they generally mean stretches of modern DNA that share unusual patterns with an available Denisovan-related reference genome and are best explained by ancient interbreeding.

This is an inference, not a visible label on a chromosome. Researchers compare present-day genomes with archaic genomes, examine allele-sharing patterns and look for segments that fit an introgression model better than ordinary shared variation. Long inherited haplotypes and agreement among several detection methods strengthen the case, but the ancient and modern genomes available for comparison are incomplete.

The term is also an abbreviation. Recent work indicates that Denisovan-related ancestry was not one uniform source. Different populations may carry ancestry from deeply divergent Denisovan lineages, including lineages that are only distantly related to the Altai Denisovan genome most people know from popular accounts.

Where the strongest signals have been reported

Papuan and Melanesian populations

Papuan and other Melanesian populations consistently appear at the high end of Denisovan-ancestry estimates. A 2016 study of 257 high-coverage genomes from 120 diverse non-African populations gave its Papuan sample a point estimate of 1.12%. That value belongs to the study’s model and sample; it is not a universal percentage for every person from New Guinea or for every population described as Papuan.

A 2026 study analyzed 161 newly sequenced genomes from 14 island groups across Island Southeast Asia and New Guinea. Its conclusion reported around 4% Denisovan-derived contribution to Papuan genomes and identified two deeply divergent Denisovan-related lineages in Papuans. The difference from the 2016 estimate illustrates why figures from separate studies cannot be treated as measurements made with the same ruler.

Philippine Aeta and other Negrito groups

GenomeAsia reported some of its highest estimates in sampled Philippine Aeta populations. It also reported high estimates in Philippine Negrito groups more broadly, while finding lower values in Malay and Andaman Negrito groups. The result concerns the populations and samples included in that project; it does not assign one fixed value to everyone who uses a broad cultural or geographic label such as “Filipino” or “Negrito.”

The same analysis found evidence consistent with a separate admixture event in the ancestors of Aeta groups after those ancestors had diverged from Melanesian populations. Aeta-specific putative Denisovan haplotypes were longer on average than haplotypes shared with Papuans or unique to Papuans. In population-genetic terms, that pattern is more consistent with a later episode of contact in Southeast Asia than with one event shared by all Oceanian and Philippine groups. It remains an inference from genetic patterns, not an observed historical meeting.

Flores, Ati and nearby island populations

GenomeAsia placed sampled groups from Flores and the Ati at an intermediate level between its highest and lowest estimates. Because the project’s exact percentage varies by population and analytical comparison, the defensible conclusion is the relative pattern: some island Southeast Asian samples carried more detectable Denisovan-related ancestry than most mainland Asian samples in the same project, but less than the highest Melanesian and Aeta estimates.

South, East and Southeast Asia more broadly

GenomeAsia detected low but statistically significant Denisovan-related ancestry in most of its sampled South, East and Southeast Asian populations. That broad distribution means Denisovan ancestry should not be described as an exclusively Oceanian trait. It also does not mean that every person in Asia carries a detectable Denisovan segment. A population signal can arise even when the amount varies widely among individuals, and some people may carry no segment detectable by a particular method.

The 2016 high-coverage analysis provides a useful scale comparison: its Sherpa sample had a point estimate of 0.10%, approximately one-tenth of its Papuan estimate. That comparison applies only to the study’s samples and method. It should not be converted into a permanent value for all Sherpa people or used to rank every Asian population.

What the major studies measured

Study Material and scope Reported result What the result means
Sankararaman and colleagues, 2016 257 high-coverage genomes representing 120 diverse non-African populations 1.12% for the Papuan sample; 0.10% for the Sherpa sample Method-specific point estimates for those samples, not individual predictions or a universal regional average
GenomeAsia 100K Project, 2019 Comparative analysis of sampled populations across Asia and Oceania Highest estimates in sampled Melanesians and Aeta; intermediate estimates in Ati and Flores groups; low but significant signals in most sampled South, East and Southeast Asian populations A geographic and population pattern within the project’s sampling and statistical framework
Cox and colleagues, 2026 161 new genomes from 14 island groups in Island Southeast Asia and New Guinea Around 4% Denisovan-derived contribution to Papuan genomes; two Papuan lineages and a separate East Asian/Siberian lineage signal A newer estimate based on different genomes and an analysis that distinguishes multiple Denisovan-related sources

The studies answer slightly different questions. The 2016 work emphasized genome-wide estimates across many non-African populations. GenomeAsia compared a wide set of Asian populations and examined haplotype patterns that can indicate separate admixture events. The 2026 study concentrated on Island Southeast Asia and New Guinea and was able to resolve more than one deeply divergent Denisovan-related lineage. Their values are therefore complementary evidence, not interchangeable entries in a single league table.

Why percentages differ between studies

Different reference genomes

A result can only detect ancestry that resembles the archaic reference sequences used in the analysis. If a living population inherited DNA from a Denisovan-related lineage that diverged deeply from the available Altai Denisovan genome, a method built around the Altai sequence may capture only part of that ancestry. Newer analyses that model multiple lineages can produce a different total.

Different statistical procedures

Researchers use several approaches, including allele-sharing statistics, local-ancestry methods and haplotype-length information. Each method has different sensitivity to short, old or highly diverged segments. Filtering choices, sequencing depth and the set of comparison populations also affect the estimate.

Different samples and population histories

“Papuan,” “Melanesian,” “Aeta” and “Asian” cover diverse communities with distinct histories. A study may sample one island, language group or local community rather than the entire population named in a headline. Migration, later admixture and uneven sampling can all change the average observed in a particular dataset.

Ancient DNA is incomplete

Only a small number of Denisovan-related ancient genomes are available, and many regions of those genomes are missing or difficult to analyze. Modern genomes also contain shared variants inherited from much older human populations. Scientists therefore report model-based estimates with uncertainty rather than a direct count of every Denisovan base in every person.

What the evidence says about ancient contact

A 2011 analysis found evidence of gene flow into the ancestors of New Guineans, Australians and Mamanwa. In that analysis, the sampled Jehai and Onge did not show the same signal. This is a result for the historical populations represented by those samples; it is not evidence that every present-day member of one named group has identical ancestry, nor that an unsampled neighboring group lacks it.

The 2026 study’s lineage analysis adds a more detailed scenario. It describes two deeply divergent Denisovan-related lineages in Papuans, both diverging from the Altai Denisovan clade hundreds of thousands of years ago, with one signal largely restricted to New Guinea and nearby islands. It also identifies a distinct lineage signal in East Asians and Siberians. These findings imply more than one archaic population contributed DNA to later humans, but they do not provide a complete map of every contact or migration.

GenomeAsia’s haplotype results are consistent with two admixture events involving Southeast Asia: an older contribution shared with Papuan ancestry and a later event affecting Aeta ancestors. “Consistent with” is important. Genetic data can identify patterns and estimate when lineages separated or mixed, but they do not record the encounter itself or identify every community involved.

Can a population result tell you whether you have Denisovan DNA?

No. A population average cannot determine whether one person carries a Denisovan-derived segment, where it is located or what percentage of that person’s genome it represents. Even within a population with a high average, inheritance is uneven: one sibling may receive a segment that another sibling does not, and recombination breaks older segments into smaller pieces over generations.

Geography and identity labels are not substitutes for genomic analysis. Having Papuan, Philippine, Australian, South Asian or East Asian ancestry may make a Denisovan-related segment more plausible in a statistical sense, but the label alone cannot establish it.

The studies summarized here do not validate a consumer ancestry test as a reliable individual-level answer to the question “How much Denisovan DNA do I have?” Consumer databases generally depend on proprietary reference panels and may not distinguish deeply divergent Denisovan-related lineages. A population study can show that ancestry exists in a region without providing a clinically or genealogically definitive result for an individual.

How to read a Denisovan-ancestry percentage responsibly

  1. Identify the population and sample. Check whether the figure refers to Papuans, a particular Philippine Aeta community, Sherpas or another sampled group. Do not expand a sample label to everyone who shares a country or broad regional identity.
  2. Record the study year and method. The 1.12%, 0.10% and around 4% figures come from different studies and analytical designs. Treat each as its own estimate.
  3. Check what “Denisovan” includes. Some analyses detect affinity to a specific reference genome; others model several Denisovan-related lineages. A larger value may reflect broader lineage coverage rather than a sudden discovery of more ancestry.
  4. Look for uncertainty and wording. “Point estimate,” “around,” “signal” and “consistent with” communicate different levels of precision. Avoid turning an approximate study conclusion into a personal decimal.
  5. Separate ancestry from traits. Detecting Denisovan-related DNA does not by itself predict appearance, health or ability. A segment’s effect depends on its specific variants and on the rest of a person’s genome.

What remains unknown

  • The world has no complete, harmonized percentage for every present-day population. The available studies sample unevenly across Asia, Oceania and neighboring regions.
  • Researchers have not recovered enough ancient Denisovan genomes to represent all of the lineages that may have contributed to modern people.
  • Different methods can assign different amounts of ancestry to the same population, especially when a lineage is deeply diverged from the available reference.
  • A regional signal does not reveal exactly where or when an individual inherited a segment.
  • The existence of a statistically significant population signal does not imply that every member of that population carries detectable Denisovan DNA.

A practical answer to “Which people have the most Denisovan DNA?”

Among the populations studied so far, Papuan and other Melanesian groups show the strongest recurring signal, with high estimates also reported for sampled Philippine Aeta populations. Philippine Negrito groups, Ati and some Flores populations show substantial or intermediate signals in GenomeAsia. Lower but detectable ancestry appears in many sampled South, East and Southeast Asian populations, including the Sherpa estimate in the 2016 high-coverage study.

The safest interpretation is comparative rather than absolute: these populations preserve more detectable Denisovan-related ancestry on average in the cited datasets. No single percentage applies to everyone in a population, and no current population map can answer an individual’s question without a properly validated genomic analysis.
