Check Pictures > Screenshots on Windows, the Desktop on Mac, Downloads on Chromebook, and the Screenshots album in Photos or Gallery on Android and iPhone. If nothing is there, the capture may have been copied to the clipboard, saved to a different folder, or left in a preview waiting for you to save it.
Screenshot locations at a glance

These are defaults, not a universal rule. A shortcut that copies an image, a manual Save As choice, or a changed capture setting can put the file somewhere else.
Windows 10 and 11
Snipping Tool captures
Press Windows + Shift + S to open the capture overlay, select the area, and take the snip. Microsoft says the captured snip is automatically saved to your Screenshots folder. In the normal setup, open File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots.
If Snipping Tool shows a notification or preview but no file appears, open Snipping Tool, go to its Settings, and check whether automatic saving is enabled and which default folder is selected. A setting change affects future captures; it does not necessarily move older files.

Print Screen and other keyboard shortcuts
For the Print Screen workflow, Microsoft’s help route is File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. Depending on the key combination and Windows configuration, the image may also be copied to the clipboard. Open an app such as Paint, paste it, and use Save As if you need a file.
When Windows did not create a file
- If you pressed a shortcut that copies the screen, paste the result into an image editor before closing it.
- If Snipping Tool opened an editor, use its Save button and note the folder shown in the Save As dialog.
- If you changed the Snipping Tool destination, search the folder shown in Settings rather than assuming Pictures > Screenshots.
Mac
Default desktop location
macOS normally saves screenshots directly to the Desktop. The standard names look like “Screen Shot [date] at [time]”, so sort the Desktop by date if the file is not immediately visible.
Choose another folder
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot app controls.
- Select Options.
- Choose the destination folder you want for future screenshots.
You can also drag the floating thumbnail to another location. If you hold Control with a screenshot shortcut, macOS saves the capture to the clipboard instead of creating a desktop file. Paste it into an image app and save it manually.
Chromebook
Find the default file
Chromebook screenshots and recordings are saved to Downloads by default. Open the Files app and select Downloads. If you used the Screen Capture tool, press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows to open it.

Change the Chromebook destination
- Open Screen Capture with Shift + Ctrl + Show windows.
- Open Settings in the capture controls.
- Select Select folder, then choose the destination.
A screenshot made after this change follows the selected folder. If you are checking an older capture, inspect both the new folder and Downloads.

Android phones and tablets
Google Photos route
Open Google Photos, choose Collections, select On this device, and open Screenshots. This grouping is the quickest way to locate captures even when you do not know the underlying storage path.
If your phone uses Gallery
Phones without Google Photos generally place screenshots in the device’s Gallery app under a Screenshots folder or album. The button combination and folder arrangement can differ between manufacturers. If the generic steps do not match your phone, use the device maker’s support instructions for that model.
Scrolling screenshots
Scrolling screenshots are available on Android 12 and later on most screens that allow scrolling. They may appear as a single tall image in the same Screenshots grouping, provided the app and screen support the feature.

Find screenshots in Photos
iPhone screenshots are automatically saved to the photo library. In the Photos app, open Collections, scroll to Media Types, and tap Screenshots. The collection separates screenshots from ordinary camera photos.
If the screenshot is not listed
- Confirm that the side-button and volume-up (or Home-button) press actually produced the capture thumbnail.
- Check the main Photos library as well as the Screenshots media type.
- If you edited or dismissed the thumbnail, look for the saved result in Photos rather than in the Files app.
Why a screenshot may seem to disappear
It was copied, not saved
Some shortcuts place an image on the clipboard. Clipboard content is temporary and does not create a file until you paste it into an app and save it. Windows Print Screen and Mac’s Control-modified shortcut are common examples.

The capture tool is waiting for a save
A preview, thumbnail, or editor window can mean the image exists only in the capture app. Use its Save or Save As command and read the destination shown in the dialog.
The default folder was changed
Snipping Tool, macOS Screenshot, and Chromebook Screen Capture each provide a way to select a destination. Check those settings before assuming the platform’s original default still applies.

The phone filed it in a photo album
Android and iPhone do not normally require you to browse a desktop-style folder. Use the Screenshots grouping in Photos or Gallery first; Android’s exact behavior can vary by manufacturer and Android version.
The page or app blocked the capture
Some apps protect content or close a capture overlay. Try the platform’s built-in tool again, verify that a preview appeared, and then check the correct destination above. If no preview or file is produced, the capture itself did not complete.

Troubleshooting checklist
Windows: Pictures > Screenshots is empty
Open Snipping Tool Settings and verify automatic saving and its folder. If you used Print Screen, paste the clipboard into Paint and save it. Also check whether a Save As dialog was pointed at another directory.
Mac: nothing is on the Desktop
Press Shift-Command-5 and inspect Options for the selected destination. If Control was held during capture, paste the clipboard into an image editor and save the file.
Chromebook: Downloads has no image
Open Screen Capture Settings and check Select folder. A previous change may have redirected new captures away from Downloads.
Android: Photos has no Screenshots album
Check Google Photos under Collections and On this device, then check the phone’s Gallery app. If neither matches, follow the manufacturer’s instructions because Android storage and capture controls vary.
iPhone: the screenshot is not in Media Types
Check the full Photos library and confirm that the capture thumbnail appeared. If no thumbnail appeared, repeat the button press and make sure the screen responded.
