First decide whether you want to change Android’s default browser or a preference inside one browser app. To change which browser opens links, go to your phone’s Settings > Apps > Default apps (or Choose default apps) > Browser app, then select a browser. To change a search engine, homepage, cookies, or another browser-specific option, open that browser and use its menu to reach Settings. Menu wording can vary by phone maker.
Choose the setting you mean
- Links from other apps open in the wrong browser: change Android’s default browser in the phone’s Settings app. Google’s Android instructions note that labels may differ by manufacturer.
- Change a search provider, homepage, cookies, site display, or browsing data: open the browser app itself and find its Settings. These preferences are specific to that browser.
Changing the default browser does not change the search engine used inside a browser. For example, choosing a different browser for tapped links will not alter the search-provider setting in Chrome. Android Help and Chrome Help describe these as separate controls.

Set the browser Android uses for links
- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Default apps or Choose default apps. On some phones this option appears under a General heading.
- Tap Browser app.
- Select the browser you want Android to use for links.
This changes the system-wide browser choice, not the settings inside each browser. If the labels do not match, look in the phone’s Apps settings for a similarly named Default apps option; Android’s wording and layout can vary by manufacturer. See Google’s default-browser instructions.
Find settings in a specific browser
Google Chrome
Open Chrome, tap More, then Settings. To choose the search provider, go to Basics > Search engine, as described in Chrome Help.

For desktop-style pages, open More > Settings > Site settings > Desktop site. Chrome documents the choices as Default view, Mobile site, and Desktop site. A website can have its own exception, and a page may need to be refreshed after changing the setting. See Chrome’s desktop-site instructions.
Samsung Internet
Open Samsung Internet, tap its menu icon, then tap Settings. Samsung documents options for the homepage and personal browsing data in this area. Before clearing browsing data, note that you may need to sign in to websites again. See Samsung’s browser support instructions.

Open Firefox, tap the three-dot menu, then tap Settings. Firefox’s default-browser control is in Settings. The steps to set Firefox as default differ between Android 8 or 9 and newer Android versions; follow the version-appropriate instructions in Mozilla Support.

Another browser
Open the browser and look for a menu button, often shown as three dots or lines, then choose Settings. If you want that app to handle links across Android, set it separately under the phone’s Settings > Apps > Default apps (or Choose default apps) > Browser app.

If the menu path does not match your phone
- Check that you are in the browser app for an app-specific preference, or in the phone’s Settings app for the default-browser choice.
- Look for equivalent labels such as Default apps and Choose default apps under Apps.
- For browser-specific settings, use the browser’s own help instructions when the menu or option name differs. Android version, device maker, browser version, and the setting you need can all affect the exact route.
