Where AI Agents Are Showing Real IT Savings

IT agent savings are reported in service desks, software workflows, and cloud operations, but the evidence varies. Here’s how to assess the numbers and calculate net impact.

Reported IT savings from AI agents are concentrated in three areas: tier 1 service desk support, software development workflows, and cloud or infrastructure operations. The strongest examples are not interchangeable: they range from a commissioned study modeling a composite company to named organizations’ own reported results and consultancy estimates. The practical test is whether an agent resolves work with acceptable quality at a lower total cost—not whether it closes tickets or completes tasks faster.

Where AI agents are delivering reported IT savings

The evidence points to work that is repetitive, well documented, and measurable. That makes tier 1 support, parts of software delivery, and routine infrastructure operations promising places to evaluate agents. Results below are attributed to the organizations or studies that reported them; they are not independently audited, typical-outcome guarantees.

Tier 1 IT support

Common candidates include password resets, access questions, and troubleshooting steps covered by reliable documentation. McKinsey describes one multinational enterprise handling approximately 450,000 tickets annually: it automated up to 80% of requests, redeployed 50% of service-agent capacity, and reported customer satisfaction of 4.8 out of 5. These are figures for that single example, not a general service-desk benchmark. McKinsey’s 2026 analysis also estimates that continuous agentic cost optimization could save 5–15%; that is consultancy analysis, not a realized savings result for every organization.

In a separate example reported by CIO on October 1, 2026, LaunchDarkly CIO Rhonda Baldwin cited about $50,000 in annualized tier 1 support savings. That figure is a named company report, not a result that can be assumed for another support operation.

Software development workflows

Agents are being applied to coding, developer onboarding, code migration, planning, code review, testing, and security remediation. A Forrester Consulting study commissioned by GitLab modeled a composite organization using interviews with four GitLab customers. For that modeled organization, the study reported 400% ROI, $7.5 million net present value over three years, and payback in under six months. These are model outputs, not a measured return across GitLab customers or the industry.

The modeled workflow estimates included:

  • Developer onboarding: 80% faster, which GitLab said represented $582,000 in three-year savings for the composite organization.
  • Code migration: 75% faster, compressing a modeled migration from eight months to two and reporting $157,000 in savings.
  • Quality assurance and security remediation: 40% time savings for engineers in those roles.
  • Individual developer productivity: a 20% gain, to which GitLab attributed $7.4 million in three-year gains in the composite model.

These figures should be read as one study’s modeled case, with its stated assumptions, rather than as independent proof that any particular team will achieve the same outcome. GitLab’s announcement quotes Chief Product and Marketing Officer Manav Khurana: “Speed of agentic coding without control can turn into an expensive liability quickly,” and says the study pairs agentic coding with governed agent infrastructure.

Cloud and infrastructure operations

Reported agent use includes monitoring deployments, approving budgets, stopping unauthorized spend, rightsizing resources, reclaiming licenses, and handling repetitive capacity or hosting work. The CIO article attributes several distinct results to named leaders and companies:

  • LaunchDarkly reported $1 million in spending avoided across two optimization projects and $120,000 saved by building an internal asset-management solution.
  • West Monroe CIO Kevin Rooney attributed a 40% reduction in yearly managed service provider costs and an estimated 2,700 operational hours saved annually to his organization’s work.
  • KamiwazaAI reported a 70% immediate reduction in cloud spend during the first round of optimization agents deployed in its own environment.

These are company- or leader-reported outcomes, not comparable controlled tests. The KamiwazaAI figure describes its first optimization round, rather than a recurring annual saving. McKinsey’s 5–15% estimate above is a separate consultancy estimate and should not be conflated with these reported deployments.

Which evidence is about agents—and which is not

“AI savings” can refer to different kinds of evidence. Distinguishing them prevents a useful case study from being mistaken for a general benchmark.

Evidence What it supports What it does not establish
Forrester Consulting study commissioned by GitLab (2026) Modeled ROI and workflow effects for a composite organization based on interviews with four customers. Typical returns for all teams or independently audited outcomes across deployments.
Named company or CIO results reported by CIO (October 1, 2026) Examples of savings, capacity, or cloud-spend changes attributed to LaunchDarkly, West Monroe, and KamiwazaAI. That results will recur at the same scale elsewhere or were measured under common conditions.
McKinsey analysis (2026) A single anonymized service-desk example and a 5–15% estimate for continuous agentic cost optimization. A universal realized savings rate.
West Monroe client case (accessed October 3, 2026) A generative-AI support engagement for an unnamed infrastructure software company: 14% lower ticket-resolution time, 45% faster documentation, and more than $26 million in annualized cost savings. It analyzed more than 10,000 tickets and used generative AI and retrieval-augmented generation. An agent-specific result: the case description does not establish that the deployment used agents.
ServiceNow internal infographic (March 2025) Company-reported internal figures include 76% of IT support requests self-served, 20% developer productivity, and 53% productivity with server patch management. A verified headline total: the page title and search extract say $355 million+, while the infographic text labels the depicted total $325 million+. Neither total is used here as a settled figure.
PwC AI Agent Survey (May 2025) Among 290 respondents currently using or planning agent use, 53% of US businesses deploying agents reported use in IT and cybersecurity. Cost savings: this is adoption evidence, not a savings measurement.

How to tell whether the savings are real for your IT team

Start by measuring the work before deployment, then compare like with like after agents are introduced. A faster interaction or a ticket marked closed is not automatically a resolved problem or a reduction in cost.

Establish a baseline before launch

  • Count task and ticket volumes by type, including exceptions and escalations.
  • Record cycle and resolution times, service-level performance, reopen rates, error rates, and user satisfaction.
  • Document operating expense and staffing time spent on the work, including review and rework.
  • Define what would count as a financial benefit: avoided external spend, reduced overtime or contractor use, or capacity redirected to higher-value work.

Include the costs and work that automation can hide

Net impact must include implementation and integration, licenses, inference, monitoring, human review, reopens, and rework. Also track quality and satisfaction: reducing time per initial response while creating more downstream work may not be a saving.

CIO’s October 2026 article gives an illustrative calculation in which an apparent €60,000 monthly saving falls to roughly €36,000 after reopened work and human checking. It is an attributed example, not a universal adjustment factor. The same article warns that removing all tier 1 work can weaken junior employees’ development paths, so staffing and training effects belong in the business case too.

Separate cash savings from released capacity

When agents let existing staff handle more work, the organization has gained capacity; it has not necessarily reduced spending. Count a cash saving only when a cost is actually avoided or lowered. If people use the time for more valuable work, measure that benefit separately rather than presenting it as an expense reduction.

Choose tasks by value, risk, and readiness

A sensible first deployment is usually narrow and bounded: frequent documented work where a mistake is inexpensive to reverse. Glokal AI founder and CTO Jeet Pattanaik described the sweet spot in CIO as “work that’s high volume, well documented, and cheap to undo if the agent gets it wrong.” He also cautioned: “A ticket the agent closed isn’t always a problem solved.”

  • Task shape: Is the task frequent and repeatable, with reliable documentation and few exceptions?
  • Risk and reversibility: What is the cost of a wrong action? Permissions changes, security decisions, and production infrastructure actions can have outsized consequences.
  • Operational readiness: Are knowledge, telemetry, APIs, and runbooks reliable? Are access boundaries, escalation paths, audit trails, and accountable owners in place?
  • Service quality: Can you measure true resolution, reopens, response time, SLA adherence, errors, and satisfaction?
  • Net economics: Does the value exceed implementation, operating, review, and rework costs—and is it avoided spend or capacity?

For consequential actions, keep human approval and clear permissions in the workflow. Microsoft Digital describes agents that can reason across data, recommend actions, and sometimes execute workflows with human oversight, but its January 2026 account does not quantify a realized enterprise-wide savings figure. Its description of Microsoft’s enterprise IT operations is therefore useful as an operating example, not a quantified savings benchmark.
