That is not the same as entering interstellar space. A 2026 peer-reviewed model study places its possible encounter with the heliosphere’s termination shock between 2029 and 2040. The heliopause lies farther out, and no authoritative source gives a guaranteed crossing year. Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) engineering projections indicate that the spacecraft could continue useful exploration beyond the heliopause until about 2050, provided its power, systems, communications and mission funding remain adequate.
“Leaving the Solar System” can mean several different boundaries
There is no single physical line called the edge of the Solar System. The date depends on which boundary you mean.
| Boundary | What it means | Current New Horizons estimate | What the estimate represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kuiper Belt | The region of icy bodies extending roughly 30 to 50 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun. | 2028–2029 | NASA’s current extended-mission plan for leaving the main Kuiper Belt region. |
| Termination shock | The zone where the outward solar wind is strongly slowed as it approaches interstellar space. | 2029–2040 | A 2026 Advances in Space Research study’s model range; the spread reflects competing heliosphere models and future solar-wind activity. |
| Heliopause | The outer plasma boundary where the solar wind is stopped by the interstellar medium. | No guaranteed year | It is farther out than the termination shock, and the available mission sources do not provide a firm New Horizons crossing date. |
| Oort Cloud or gravitational edge | A vastly more distant region associated with the Sun’s long-range gravitational influence. | No mission date | The 2028–2040 dates should not be described as an Oort Cloud exit. |
Thus, saying that New Horizons will “leave the Solar System” in 2028 or 2029 is misleading unless the statement explicitly means the Kuiper Belt.
New Horizons’ journey so far
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| January 19, 2006 | Launch date listed in NASA’s mission record. Some mission narratives describe the launch as January 18. |
| February 2007 | Jupiter gravity assist increased the spacecraft’s speed by about 9,000 miles per hour (14,000 km/h). |
| July 14, 2015 | Pluto flyby—the first close exploration of Pluto by a spacecraft. |
| January 1, 2019 | Arrokoth flyby—the first close exploration of a second Kuiper Belt object. |
| October 1, 2024 | New Horizons reached 60 AU from the Sun, according to NASA. |
| 2025 onward | The extended mission emphasizes heliophysics observations, fuel conservation and lower operational complexity while a future close-flyby target is sought. |
| 2026 status update | NASA reported that every weekly status beacon during the long hibernation was green. Updated autonomy software is designed for greater distance, declining power and longer radio-signal travel times. |
When will it reach interstellar space?
If “interstellar space” means crossing the heliopause, the date is still uncertain. The 2026 study predicts a termination-shock encounter sometime from 2029 to 2040, but the termination shock is an inner boundary: the solar wind slows there before reaching the heliopause. A termination-shock date therefore cannot be used as a heliopause date.

The range is broad because the heliosphere changes with solar-wind conditions and because different physical models place its boundaries differently. New Horizons’ eventual heliopause crossing should occur after its termination-shock encounter, but the sources available for this mission do not establish a single calendar year.
How long can the spacecraft keep operating?
Its radioisotope power declines gradually
New Horizons uses one radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG). NASA’s mission reference gives an electrical output of about 250 watts at launch and about 200 watts at the Pluto encounter. The generator’s plutonium-238 fuel has an 88-year half-life, so available power decreases progressively rather than ending like a battery that reaches a fixed expiration date.

NASA explains that the relatively short half-life of Pu-238 produces a small, predictable decline that can be managed over a typical mission. Lower power still matters: operators must prioritize instruments, heaters, computers, transmitters and other loads as the available electrical budget shrinks.
Other limits matter as much as the RTG
- Propellant: finite fuel limits attitude control and any trajectory or pointing adjustments.
- Thermal control: as the RTG produces less heat, keeping spacecraft components within their required temperature ranges becomes more difficult.
- Electronics: decades-old computers and instruments must continue functioning despite radiation exposure and component aging.
- Communications: the spacecraft’s antenna and transmitter must send increasingly faint signals across a growing distance, while radio commands take longer to arrive.
- Operations: NASA must continue funding ground systems, controllers and science analysis, and must decide that the scientific return justifies the operating cost.
“Survive” can therefore mean several things: remaining physically intact, responding to commands, transmitting data, or still returning scientifically useful observations. Those milestones need not occur at the same time.

The best published longevity estimate
APL’s engineering assessment says subsystem trends “substantiate projections of the mission’s potential to continue its exploration beyond the heliopause until ~2050.” The wording is important: approximately 2050 is a projection of potential exploration, not a promised shutdown date or a guaranteed heliopause crossing.
NASA’s 2026 health update confirms that New Horizons remains operational after hibernation, but it does not announce a fixed end date. Actual longevity will depend on the power decline, thermal and propulsion health, communication performance, spacecraft anomalies and NASA’s future operating decisions.

Will New Horizons outlive the Voyager probes?
There is not enough evidence here to make a defensible head-to-head prediction. New Horizons has an APL projection for potentially useful exploration to about 2050, but that projection is not a comparative forecast of Voyager spacecraft lifetimes. “Outlive” could mean remaining powered, still communicating, or still producing science, and those definitions can yield different answers. The reliable conclusion is narrower: New Horizons is expected to remain a working science spacecraft for many years, subject to the engineering and funding limits above.
Quick Recap
What each common question means
- “When does New Horizons leave the Solar System?” If you mean the Kuiper Belt, NASA’s estimate is 2028–2029. If you mean the heliopause, no fixed year is established.
- “When does it reach interstellar space?” A model study places the termination-shock encounter between 2029 and 2040; the heliopause crossing would be later and remains uncertain.
- “How long can it survive?” APL projections support the possibility of useful exploration beyond the heliopause until about 2050, provided the spacecraft and mission remain adequately powered, healthy, connected and funded.
