For most living rooms, the SofaBaton X1S is the best universal remote. Its hub handles infrared and Bluetooth devices from across the room, while one-click activities can turn on equipment and select the required inputs. Choose the SofaBaton X2 for a projector, AVR, or smart-home-heavy system; choose the less expensive U2 for a straightforward TV setup. Verify your exact device models before buying—brand and device-count claims are not guarantees of compatibility.
Quick comparison
| Remote | Best for | Control method | Capacity or compatibility claim | Activities and input switching | Smart-home and voice control | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SofaBaton X1S | Most TV, soundbar/receiver, and streaming-device rooms | Hub sends IR and Bluetooth; remote communicates with hub | Manufacturer says more than 6,000 brands and 500,000 home-entertainment devices | One-click activities; can power devices and set TV/receiver inputs when configured correctly | Wi-Fi device discovery for supported products; less extensive than X2 | Requires hub placement and careful source/power setup |
| SofaBaton X2 | Projector-plus-AVR systems and advanced automation | Hub-based control with touchscreen remote | Not stated | Activity switching and broader direct-device control | Alexa, Google, Sonos, Roku, Philips Hue, and Home Assistant MQTT integrations reported by Tom’s Guide | More setup; smart-home controls are less polished than Harmony’s were |
| SofaBaton U2 | Simple TV-first rooms on a budget | Infrared and Bluetooth from the handset | Controls up to 15 devices, according to SofaBaton and Tom’s Guide | Customizable macros; no hub-based whole-room activity system | No smart-home controls | Line-of-sight operation and a steeper learning curve |

One-room, infrared-only equipment | Direct line of sight | Model-specific; check each manufacturer’s device list | Usually limited compared with hub remotes | Typically none | Cannot reliably control hidden devices, Bluetooth gear, or networked smart-home products |
| Amazon Fire TV Cube | Alexa-centered streaming setups | Streaming box plus voice and compatible device control | Not stated | Useful for supported TV and receiver commands | Alexa | Primarily a streaming device, not a general replacement for every IR remote |
Why the X1S is the best default
The X1S solves the two problems that make a universal remote worthwhile: multiple control protocols and unreliable input changes. Its hub emits the IR and Bluetooth commands, so devices can remain inside a cabinet and do not all need a clear path to the handset. The X1S manual specifies roughly 30 feet from remote to hub and from hub to device.

Its one-click activities can coordinate a sequence such as turning on a television, AV receiver, and Blu-ray player and selecting the correct inputs. That behavior depends on accurate configuration: the app must know how a television, projector, or receiver changes sources, including its input order or direct-input commands.

Hardware and battery details
- Backlit buttons and a scroll wheel make the handset easier to use in a dark room.
- The manual lists a 1,050mAh battery, approximately three hours of charging, and approximately 45 days of working time. Actual runtime varies with use and firmware.
- The hub architecture is valuable when equipment is hidden or spread across a cabinet, but it adds another device that needs power, network access, and correct placement.
When the X2 is worth the extra complexity
The X2 is the specialist choice for a projector-and-AVR room or a setup that treats lighting and other smart-home products as part of each activity. Tom’s Guide reports a color touchscreen, backlit controls, activity switching, direct control of Sonos, Roku, and Philips Hue, Alexa and Google links, and Home Assistant MQTT support.
That flexibility comes with more configuration. Independent testing reported that some devices required manual input and power settings, and that smart-home control was less polished than Logitech Harmony’s implementation. Choose X2 when those integrations solve a real problem; do not choose it solely for the touchscreen.

When the U2 is the smarter buy
The U2 is appropriate when the room is primarily a television plus a few accessories and you can point the remote at them. SofaBaton specifies infrared and Bluetooth control, customizable macros, and replacement for more than 15 remotes; Tom’s Guide describes control of 15 devices, mobile-app support, no smart-home controls, and an inexpensive price position.
Because the handset—not a separate hub—sends commands, devices generally need line of sight. Setup also has a learning curve. That is a reasonable trade for a simple room, but it is the wrong architecture for a cabinet full of equipment or dependable projector/receiver activities.

Projector and AVR rooms: what to check before buying
- List every device and exact model. Include the projector, AVR, television if present, streaming box, disc player, game console, and any lighting or speaker products.
- Identify each device’s protocol. IR-only products need line of sight to the hub or an IR emitter; Bluetooth and network devices need their supported pairing or same-network method.
- Document input behavior. Record whether each device uses numbered direct inputs, a sequential input button, or an on-screen menu. Activity remotes cannot select the right source consistently without this information.
- Document power behavior. Note whether power is a toggle or separate on/off commands. Incorrect power-state assumptions are a common reason an activity starts with one component off.
- Place and test the hub. For X1S, keep the hub within the manual’s approximately 30-foot remote-to-hub and hub-to-device ranges and give its IR output a path to the equipment or use the appropriate emitters.
- Test every activity from different starting states. Try the room with all devices off, with only the streamer on, and after manually changing an input. Fix source or power configuration before blaming compatibility.
Networked and smart-home setup
The X1S manual says Wi-Fi devices such as Roku, Sonos, and Philips Hue can be found when they are on the same wireless LAN. Confirm that the remote system and those devices use the same network and that the product is a supported model. Network discovery does not automatically provide every command available in the device’s native app.
X2 extends the idea with reported Alexa, Google, and Home Assistant MQTT connections. These integrations are most useful when an activity must coordinate entertainment with lights or other automation; they also introduce account, network, and configuration dependencies.

Why Harmony owners are looking for replacements
Logitech ended Harmony hardware manufacturing in 2021, and its legacy software was shut down in 2025. Existing remotes may continue to work in some homes, but buyers replacing a failed unit should plan around currently supported products and apps rather than assuming Harmony’s cloud services will return.

How to choose in one minute
- TV, soundbar or receiver, and streamer: Buy X1S unless your exact devices fail its compatibility check.
- Projector, AVR, several sources, or lighting automation: Choose X2 if you are willing to configure power and input behavior carefully.
- TV plus a few visible IR/Bluetooth devices: Choose U2 for a simpler, lower-cost handset.
- Only one or two basic IR devices: A GE, Philips, or RCA multi-device remote may be sufficient.
- Hands-free Alexa control is the priority: Consider Fire TV Cube, remembering that it is principally a streaming player rather than a universal IR replacement.
Compatibility and setup checklist
- Search the manufacturer’s compatibility database using exact model numbers.
- Confirm whether each device uses IR, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi and whether a hub is required.
- Check that the required streaming, audio, and smart-home services are supported in your region and current firmware.
- Make sure the app can represent your input order and power commands.
- Keep return options available: compatibility databases and app behavior can change with firmware, and inventory and pricing are volatile.
