Android 11 was released on September 8, 2020. Google began a staged rollout that day for select phones, rather than updating every Android device simultaneously.

What “released” meant on September 8, 2020
The September 8 announcement marked the beginning of availability, not a universal update for every Android phone. Google said the rollout was starting on select Pixel, OnePlus, Xiaomi, OPPO and realme phones, with additional manufacturers launching or upgrading devices over the following months.
Whether a particular phone received Android 11 depended on its model, manufacturer, carrier and country. Google’s announcement does not establish one date for every model or market.

Beta versus final release
Google announced the Android 11 Beta on June 10, 2020, in its beta announcement. A beta is a testing version that can contain unfinished features or bugs; it should not be confused with the stable release on September 8.
Android 11 standard edition versus Go edition
Android 11 (Go edition) had a separate announcement on September 10, 2020, in Google’s Go edition post. That date applies to the lightweight edition intended for lower-memory devices, not to the main Android 11 release.

Google said Android 11 (Go edition) delivered app launches up to 20 percent faster than Android 10 (Go edition). This was Google’s stated comparison for the Go edition and does not describe every standard Android 11 phone or workload.

- Identify the exact phone model, carrier version and country.
- Open the manufacturer’s software-update or support page and look for that model’s Android 11 schedule or release notes.
- On the phone, open Settings and use the software-update screen to check for an available update. Menu names can vary by manufacturer and Android version.
- If no update appears, the device may have a later rollout window, carrier approval pending, or no Android 11 upgrade eligibility.
The September 8, 2020 date answers when Android 11 launched; it does not prove when any particular handset received it.
