The Glyph Matrix is the circular dot-matrix display built into the back of the Nothing Phone (3). It is part of Nothing’s Glyph Interface, showing notifications, utility feedback and small interactive animations. You enable it in Settings > Glyph interface, then use the rear pressure-sensitive button to access Glyph Toys and their patterns.
What is the Glyph Matrix?
Nothing describes the Glyph Matrix as a rear display at the heart of the Phone (3)’s Glyph Interface. It is not a separate accessory or removable module. The circular array of lights can provide glanceable alerts and visual feedback without requiring you to turn on the main screen.
Nothing’s official product description says the Matrix can show a camera-timer countdown, torch output, volume-level visualization and an animation when NFC is triggered. It also supports entertainment features grouped under the name Glyph Toys, including Glyph mirror, Spin the Bottle and Rock Paper Scissors. These are manufacturer-described functions; the available information does not establish independent testing of their performance.

Nothing says the torch feature uses all 489 micro-LEDs. That figure is a manufacturer specification; no independent measurement or publication year was provided for it.

How to turn on and use Glyph Matrix
- Open Settings on your Nothing Phone (3).
- Tap Glyph interface.
- Switch on Glyph lights. This enables the phone’s rear light interface, including Matrix alerts and effects.
- In the same area, open Glyph Toys and choose the controls or toys you want available.
- Use the pressure-sensitive button on the back of the phone, near the volume button. A gentle tap responds to the button; tapping cycles through available Glyph Toys.
- Long-press the rear button to select the currently displayed toy or animation. The selected pattern then appears on the Matrix.
Nothing’s support guidance and product description use slightly different wording for the button interaction, but both identify the same rear control: tap to move through toys and long-press to select one.
How Flip to Glyph works
Flip to Glyph is a separate operating mode for alerts. Place the Phone (3) face up on a flat surface. When the mode activates, the phone uses silent, lights-only notifications and calls instead of audible ringing; the Glyph Matrix pulses briefly to indicate that Flip to Glyph is active.

This mode is useful when you want to see incoming alerts without sound, but it does not turn the Phone (3) into a general-purpose rear display. The phone must be face up on a flat surface for the described behavior.
Safety and accessibility
Nothing warns: “The Glyph interface may not be safe for people with epilepsy and others sensitive to light.” If flashing or bright light can trigger symptoms for you, avoid enabling visual alerts and animations or consult a qualified medical professional before using them.
