The final named models ended production between May and July 2009. No known company makes new consumer LaserDisc players today, so anyone looking to play existing discs should expect to find used or refurbished equipment.
When did LaserDisc player production end?
Pioneer announced its decision on January 14, 2009, saying it would manufacture approximately 3,000 more players before ending production. The company later listed the final production dates for its four named models: DVL-919 and CLD-R5 in May 2009, DVK-900 in June, and DVL-K88 in July. Pioneer’s announcement and its model-specific support FAQ, updated November 13, 2020, provide those dates.

In September 2009, Pioneer said the small additional quantity it had offered for sale through its Japanese website had sold out. That confirms the end of that particular allocation, not the date every retailer sold its remaining inventory. Pioneer’s September 25 notice records the update.

No known company makes new consumer LaserDisc players today. Pioneer’s records establish that its production ended in 2009 and that its player models had been discontinued for years. Those records are not a worldwide census of every possible niche or one-off device, so the careful answer is that new consumer players are not known to be in production. For ordinary buyers, the practical choice is used or refurbished vintage hardware.

Why did Pioneer stop making players?
Pioneer said that DVD and Blu-ray had become established and that it was difficult to obtain the specialized parts needed to produce LaserDisc players. The company described a combination of changing media markets and parts availability; it did not identify one format as the sole cause. Its January 14, 2009 announcement stated: “However, under the market environment in which new media such as DVD and Blu-ray discs now dominate, it has become difficult for Pioneer to procure the parts required to produce LD players.”
Which models were the last LaserDisc players?
Pioneer named four models in its final production announcement. They were not all conventional standalone players: two also handled other kinds of media, while two were karaoke systems with LaserDisc capability.

Pioneer’s 2009 announcement gave three distinct cumulative figures. They describe different populations and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Buying a player
Expect to shop for used or refurbished equipment; current listings and prices are not established here. Before buying, check the specific unit’s verified playback condition, disc and television-system compatibility, video outputs, whether its remote is included, the seller’s return terms, and how the player will be protected during shipping. The model name alone does not establish that a particular unit works or suits your setup.

Getting one serviced
Pioneer said it would retain performance parts for eight years after each model’s production ended and would continue repairs beyond that period if parts remained. Its Japanese customer-support notice, updated November 17, 2020, says parts had run out and Pioneer’s after-sales service had ended. This describes Pioneer’s Japanese service; it does not establish whether independent specialists currently accept repairs. See Pioneer’s service notice.
