Turn hammer action off for wood, metal, and plastic, and never use it to drill through tile. The exact selector and permitted uses vary by model, so check your drill’s manual.
What hammer mode does
A hammer drill combines bit rotation with rapid forward impacts to help the bit work into resistant masonry. DEWALT Support describes its hammer feature as moving the bit “in a forward motion as well.” DEWALT Support’s explanation of hammer drills was updated on 24 November 2025.

Do not confuse a hammer drill’s rotating hammerdrill mode with a rotary hammer’s hammer-only mode. On rotary hammers that offer it, hammer-only mode is for chiseling; use a chisel bit only in a mode the tool’s manual permits.

| Material or task | Mode guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete, brick, or stone | Hammerdrill mode, if the drill supports it | Use a masonry-rated bit and confirm its shank and diameter fit the chuck and the tool’s stated capacity. |
| Wood | Drill-only mode on the cited DEWALT models | Use a wood-appropriate bit and follow the model’s instructions. |
| Metal | Drill-only mode on the cited DEWALT models | Choose a suitable metal bit. The DWD520/DWD525 manual discusses cutting lubricant, with exceptions for cast iron and brass. |
| Plastic | Drill-only mode on the cited D253 rotary hammers | Use an appropriate bit and speed for the material, as directed by the manual. |
| Tile | Hammer action off | Use a tile-suitable bit and technique; DEWALT Support says, “Never use hammer action when drilling through tiles.” |
The material guidance above reflects the cited DEWALT manuals, not a universal setting for every drill. For example, the D25313/D25323/D25324 rotary-hammer manual specifies drill-only for wood, metal, and plastics, and hammerdrill for masonry. Your model’s manual takes precedence.
#1 Best Overall
- ATTENTION: This rotary hammer can only be used with SDS Plus (SDS +) bits--NOT with regular drills, SDS Max, or other types of bits(PLEASE CHECK BEFORE ORDERING)
- Efficient Use: The lightweight rotary hammer weighs only 7.19 lbs. and is ideal for overhead or downward drilling applications. The SDS-Plus bit system offers tool-less bit changes and maximum impact energy transfer. Ideal for DIY enthusiasts, not suitable for heavy-duty demolition work
- Power: 9 AMP motor delivers 0-1,100 RPM and 0-5,300 BPM, 2.21 ft.lbs.(3 Joules) of impact energy for fast drilling in concrete, cement, brick, masonry and tile removal
- 4 Modes: "Rotary Hammer" mode is ideal for quickly drilling in concrete. "Rotary Only" mode is suitable for light drilling in masonry or brick work. "Hammer Only" mode is perfect for tile removal. "Chisel position Adjustment" mode allows free adjustment of the chisel angle
- Convenient Use: Equipped with forward and reverse buttons for easy removal of tightened bits. Variable speed trigger with locking button to accurately start the drill and reduce fatigue
How to select and use hammer mode
- Identify the controls. Check the symbols and manual for your exact model. Some drills combine settings in a collar; rotary hammers may offer drill-only, hammerdrill, and hammer-only modes. Do not infer a setting from another tool’s layout.
- Stop before changing modes if your manual requires it. The DEWALT D25313/D25323/D25324 manual says to let the tool come to a complete stop before moving its mode selector; switching before it stops may damage the tool.
- Fit a compatible bit. Confirm the bit is rated for the material and that its shank and diameter are accepted by the chuck and the drill’s stated capacity. The cited DEWALT manuals specify carbide-tipped or masonry bits for masonry.
- Secure the work and hold the drill steadily. Clamp the workpiece. Install and use the side handle when the manual specifies one, and control the tool with both hands to help manage twisting forces.
- Apply only enough forward pressure to keep the bit engaged. Keep the bit straight and avoid side pressure. The DWD520/DWD525 manual warns that excessive force can slow drilling and overheat the tool. If drilling slows or the tool overheats, ease off and check the setup.
- Clear debris when needed. For deep holes, the cited DWD manual advises partially withdrawing the running bit to clear debris if hammer speed drops.
- Switch off before adjustments or accessory changes. Disconnect power when the manual calls for it, and follow its instructions for handling hot bits or components.
When hammer mode is the wrong choice
Wood, metal, and plastic
On the cited DEWALT models, these materials are drilled in drill-only mode. Impacts are intended for masonry on those tools, not ordinary drilling. Select the appropriate bit and speed according to the material and your drill’s manual.
Tile
Keep hammer action off when drilling through tile. DEWALT Support’s guidance is explicit: “Never use hammer action when drilling through tiles.” Choose a suitable tile bit and follow authoritative instructions for that bit and tile type. DEWALT’s tile and masonry guidance was published on 22 December 2020.

When the bit catches or the drill stalls
A caught bit can cause a sudden reaction. Release the trigger and investigate rather than repeatedly pulsing it. Do not try to compensate by forcing the drill; follow the manual’s recovery and safety instructions.
What to check if you are choosing a drill or bit
- For a bit: Check material suitability, shank and chuck compatibility, diameter, and the tool’s stated masonry capacity.
- For a drill: Check which modes it actually offers, its masonry capacity, speed and impact settings, whether a side handle is provided or required, and whether the control layout suits your work.
Capacities are model-specific: for example, the DWD520/DWD525 manual gives figures for those drills, which should not be applied to other models. A Bosch GSB18V-490N product page illustrates that some modern drill/drivers have separate hammer, drilling, and driving modes; it is an example, not a comparison or recommendation.
