Contact each provider early, confirm the effective dates and notice rules, and decide whether you need a short overlap at both addresses.
Choose the dates based on responsibility and service needs
For a new home, request a start date that ensures service is available when you need it, taking account of when you become legally responsible for the property and the provider’s procedures. Portland Water Bureau, for example, uses the date a customer becomes legally responsible as the start date and first billing date for its water-related account. For a home you are leaving, give the provider a specific stop date tied to when your responsibility or occupancy ends.

Those dates can differ from the day the moving truck arrives. A home purchase closing, lease end, key handover, move-in, and physical move-out may all occur on separate days. Check the relevant agreement and ask the provider how it treats the date you give it. Portland Water Bureau similarly asks sellers for the date they cease to be legally responsible as the stop date or last billed date.
There is no universal scheduling deadline
Utility lead times vary by provider and location. These U.S. examples show why you should ask the company serving each address instead of assuming a single national rule:
#1 Best Overall
| Provider or jurisdiction | Scheduling details |
|---|---|
| Southern California Edison, California | Its Move Center accepts start or stop dates up to 30 days ahead and does not allow a past date for starting service. Southern California Edison moving service |
| PG&E, California | For most residential cases, customers can request a same-day start or stop and arrange a start up to 60 days ahead. Existing residential customers moving within PG&E territory can request the old stop and new start in one transaction. PG&E moving service |
| Consumers Energy, Michigan | It distinguishes start, transfer, and stop requests by whether the customer is new, moving within its territory, or leaving. Its 30-day request horizon reflects the provider’s view that move dates are more likely to change beyond that window; a transfer may leave power or gas active at both addresses. Consumers Energy moving service |
| Pennsylvania | Under 52 Pa. Code § 56.16(a), a customer about to vacate or seeking discontinuation must give at least seven days’ notice and specify the desired stop date. The customer remains responsible for service rendered when notice has not been given. Pennsylvania Code, § 56.16 |
| Portland Water Bureau, Oregon | For its water-related account, the city uses the date a new owner becomes legally responsible as the start and first billing date; it asks sellers for the date they cease to be legally responsible as the stop or last billed date. Portland Water Bureau start, stop, or transfer service |
These are provider-specific examples, not interchangeable rules. The Pennsylvania notice requirement is state-specific, and the California, Michigan, and Oregon procedures apply to the named providers or utility. Ask your own provider how far ahead it accepts requests, whether same-day service is available, and whether an appointment or meter access is needed.
A practical schedule for a move
- Once your dates are reasonably firm: Identify the electric, gas, water or sewer, trash, and communications providers for both addresses. Contact each one with the old and new addresses and your requested start and stop dates. The Missouri Public Service Commission suggests contacting providers several weeks before a move and keeping a record of the conversation. Missouri Public Service Commission moving guide
- Set the new-address start: Request service for the date you become responsible for the property or need service available, subject to the provider’s scheduling rules. Ask whether the request is a new account or a transfer and whether it requires a separate action for each address.
- Set the old-address stop: Give the provider a specific end date. Do not assume a landlord, buyer, seller, or next occupant will close an account in your name. The Missouri PSC warns: “Do not rely on others to take utility service out of your name. You will be responsible for an account that has not been closed.”
- Arrange any overlap: If you will be moving in stages, cleaning, or making repairs, ask whether service can remain active at both addresses and how each account will be billed during that period.
- Before leaving: Ask whether a final meter reading is available, provide a forwarding address for the final bill, and save request confirmations or a note of the date, representative, and agreed service dates.
Decide whether you need utility overlap
A short period with both addresses active can keep lights, heat, water, or other services available while you move and clean. It can also mean that you remain responsible for charges at both homes during the overlap. Ask the provider whether it permits this, whether one move request can cover both addresses, and how charges will appear. Consumers Energy says its transfer process may leave power or gas on at both addresses; that is not a guarantee that every utility offers the same arrangement.
Check the details before confirming
- Which company serves each address, and which services require separate requests?
- What is the earliest accepted start or stop date? Is a same-day request possible?
- Does a transfer handle both addresses, or must you submit separate start and stop requests?
- Can both addresses stay active temporarily, and who is billed during the overlap?
- Does the provider need an appointment, meter access, or a final reading?
- What date will the final bill use, and where should it be sent?
A transfer can mean different things: one provider may use it for an existing customer moving within its territory, while a new occupant may need to open a separate account. Confirm the account treatment rather than relying on the label alone. Keep confirmations until the final bill is settled.
When a closing date affects the plan
Some transaction-specific advice differs from utility rules. Opendoor’s seller guide, updated May 29, 2026, recommends scheduling shutoff three days after closing as part of its own transaction process; it also advises arranging utilities one to two weeks before closing. Treat that as Opendoor guidance, not a general utility deadline. Your own closing terms, provider rules, and responsibility date determine the appropriate stop date.
