Keep screenshots in ordinary Git when they are small, change infrequently, and should be checked out with the exact source version. Use Git LFS when large images need project-level versioning but should not be stored as full binary blobs in Git history. Host them separately when they are generated or delivered independently, or when storing them in the repository burdens clones and builds. There is no universal file-size cutoff: choose based on repository growth, versioning needs, delivery traffic, quotas, and the effort of maintaining external storage.
What should determine where a screenshot lives?
Start with the screenshot’s job, not an arbitrary file-size rule. Ask whether contributors need the exact image alongside a particular code revision, whether every clone and build needs the file, and whether it is primarily a published asset served to visitors.

- Size and change rate: Consider the total volume and how often image contents change. Each changed binary version can add to stored history or storage usage.
- Version coupling: Keep an image close to source when restoring a code revision should also restore its matching screenshot.
- Checkout and CI behavior: Determine whether every contributor and build needs the images, or only the deployed site does.
- Serving needs: Consider traffic, caching, URL stability, and the hosting platform’s limits.
- Access and durability: Account for public or private access, backups, retention, and recovery if an external host is unavailable.
- Maintenance and cost: Compare LFS storage and bandwidth limits with the work of configuring object storage, access controls, and caching.
When should screenshots live in ordinary Git?
Use ordinary Git when screenshots are modest in size, change infrequently, and are part of the project’s source-controlled record. This often fits a small set of documentation images, UI assets used by the application, and visual regression fixtures whose exact versions matter to tests. Optimize images and remove redundant generated files rather than committing every capture.

GitHub says repository health depends on factors including size, commit frequency, contents, and structure, not size alone. Its guidance warns when a file exceeds 50 MiB and blocks files above 100 MiB; it says repositories should ideally stay below 1 GB and strongly recommends staying below 5 GB. These are GitHub-specific guardrails and recommendations, not universal Git thresholds or performance guarantees. GitHub’s large-file guidance has the current details.

When is Git LFS a better fit?
Choose Git LFS when contributors need large binary assets versioned and checked out with the project, but keeping each complete image version in ordinary Git history is undesirable. Git stores a small pointer in its tree; the actual file is stored separately and retrieved when needed. That keeps the asset associated with the project workflow without putting its full contents in every ordinary Git commit. GitHub’s Git LFS documentation explains the model and its limits.
On GitHub, documented maximum individual LFS object sizes depend on plan: 2 GB for Free and Pro, 4 GB for Team, and 5 GB for Enterprise Cloud. Objects above 5 GB are rejected. GitHub also notes that each new LFS version is pushed as a whole file and counts toward storage use. Storage and bandwidth quotas or billing therefore matter, especially for frequently regenerated screenshots. Check whether clones, archives, and CI workflows actually fetch the LFS objects they need. GitHub Pages is an important exception: Git LFS cannot be used with GitHub Pages sites.

When should you host screenshots outside the repository?
Use a separate host or object store when screenshots are generated at scale, change independently of code, are mainly delivery assets, or do not need to be fetched by every contributor and build. This avoids making each repository checkout carry files that only a deployed site or another consumer needs. GitHub’s repository guidance recommends keeping programmatically generated files outside Git, for example in object storage: GitHub’s repository limits guidance.

For a GitHub Pages site, the documented limits are a recommended source repository size of 1 GB, a maximum published site size of 1 GB, and a soft bandwidth limit of 100 GB per month. These are Pages-specific figures, not general limits for all websites. If usage exceeds its quotas, GitHub says it may suggest a CDN, releases, or a more suitable host. See GitHub Pages limits.

Cloudflare documents using R2 to store static assets for Pages, including cases where Pages file-count or file-size limits are an issue. R2 is S3-compatible object storage; Cloudflare says it has no egress fees, a vendor claim to check against its current terms when evaluating costs. See Cloudflare’s Pages and R2 guide and how R2 works.
External storage shifts the problem from repository weight to infrastructure: maintain stable URLs, permissions, availability, backups, and a way to reproduce the right asset for a historical code version. Where reproducibility matters, keep a source-controlled manifest, checksum, or versioned URL. Do not put private screenshots or secrets in a public repository or bucket.

How do the three options compare?
| Option | Best fit | What contributors or builds fetch | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary Git | Modest, infrequently changed screenshots that belong with source history | The file is in the repository checkout | Every retained binary version contributes to Git history; GitHub’s file and repository guidance applies if hosted there |
| Git LFS | Large assets that need project versioning but should not be full blobs in ordinary Git history | A pointer is in Git; the LFS object must be retrieved where needed | Host-specific object limits, storage and bandwidth quotas, billing, and workflow configuration |
| External host or object storage | Generated, independently delivered, or selectively fetched assets | Only consumers configured to access the host need the asset | Separate work for URL stability, access, backups, caching, and historical reproducibility |
A practical decision process
- Keep it in ordinary Git if it is modest, changes rarely, and should be restored with the corresponding source revision.
- Move it to Git LFS if the asset needs project-level versioning but full binary history is imposing a cost. Check the host’s object-size limits, quotas, billing, and whether CI and clone workflows retrieve the objects.
- Use external storage if the image is chiefly for delivery, is generated in volume, or need not accompany every checkout. Plan for stable references, permissions, backups, caching, and version mapping.
- Measure the actual impact before changing course: repository growth, clone and build needs, asset update frequency, and serving requirements are more useful than a universal size threshold, which does not exist.
