Richard Emate says a distinction between contradiction and “leftover surprise” led him to change how VoltMem decides whether an AI agent should update a stored fact. Contradiction asks how much a new observation disagrees with memory; surprise asks whether that mismatch was unexpected given what the system had already seen. The distinction shaped VoltMem’s update policy, matching safeguards and reconciliation strategy. It is Emate’s design account, not evidence that the software is conscious or that its reported experiments have been independently reproduced.
What does “leftover surprise” mean?
In Emate’s framing, a contradiction score captures disagreement between a new observation and a stored fact. Surprise is a separate signal: it reflects whether that mismatch was unexpected in light of the system’s learned expectations. As Emate puts it, “Contradiction is not surprise.”

That separation matters because repeated weak comments may become predictable without becoming true. If an agent has heard several casual mentions of a new job, another similar remark may be less unexpected than the same statement after a long quiet period. A raw contradiction average can show disagreement, but it does not by itself show that the disagreement is surprising.

Emate describes this as a design analogy for memory behavior, not a claim about consciousness. The goal is to make updates responsive to meaningful changes without allowing every noisy or mistaken observation to rewrite stored information.

Why the first overwrite rule caused problems
VoltMem’s earlier overwrite logic used a fact’s volatility prior in two ways: it reduced the strength of evidence and raised the threshold for replacing the stored fact. That could protect a stable trait from a weak signal, but it could also make an explicit, real change—such as a career change—hard to register.
Emate reports that removing volatility from the evidence score helped an explicit change pass. It also made the system more vulnerable when a classifier incorrectly labeled a stable trait as changeable. He describes this as a tradeoff between cautious and permissive behavior, rather than a problem solved by blending both responses into one formula.

In VoltMem 0.4.0, the repository identifies composite as the default escalation mode. In Emate’s account, it is cautious when evidence is weak but allows an easier update path for an explicit correction or an unexpected residual. The repository also retains homeostatic and current modes. These are project-specific settings, not universal constants for how quickly categories of facts should change.

How the revised update decision works
Emate describes three timescales in the revised design. They separate the immediate signal from the decision to act and from later review of accumulated evidence.

- Live leftover surprise: assesses whether the current observation was unexpected.
- Escalation gate: determines when to use a more permissive update path rather than the cautious one.
- Sleep-time consolidation: reviews evidence over a window to assess whether a belief has shifted over time.
This makes evidence spacing relevant to later consolidation: one new remark does not necessarily mean the same thing as a pattern of observations. The three-part account is Emate’s description of VoltMem’s design, not an independently audited specification.
Why matching must come before overwriting
An overwrite rule can only help if the new observation first finds the right stored memory. If it misses, the system may add a duplicate instead. If it matches two different facts incorrectly, it may overwrite the wrong one. Emate summarizes the sequence this way: “The matcher is in front of the overwrite rule.”

That is why similarity should retrieve candidates rather than make the final identity decision on its own. Two statements can be broadly similar while referring to different subjects or propositions. VoltMem’s repository describes heuristic subject-and-attribute matching; when the system is uncertain, it can keep frames as twins for later reconciliation rather than merging them immediately.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Emate favors that conservative approach when a mistaken merge would be destructive: “A duplicate is recoverable. Both facts stay retrievable; a later pass can reconcile them.” The tradeoff is deferred cleanup and potentially duplicated memories, in exchange for reducing the risk of writing a change onto the wrong fact.

What Emate’s experiments reported
The figures below are results reported by Emate in his 2026 article. They describe his experiments and should not be read as independently verified performance or broad benchmarks.
| Reported result | What Emate said it measured |
|---|---|
| About 84% classifier accuracy | Accuracy in the classifier setup described in the article. |
| 1.1 percentage points lower accuracy and 20% more false updates | Emate’s comparison for the allostatic mode at the described classifier error rate. |
| 49 of 56 held-out pairs, with zero false merges | Results for the conservative local verifier described in the article. |
| About five seconds per call | Time for a 14B-model call; Emate considered it acceptable for overnight processing but too slow for an interactive write path. |
| 22%, 78% and 56% of update cases routed | Keyword similarity routing versus a real embedder under perfect labels and the shipped classifier, respectively; Emate also reported about six points of decision error once cases were routed. |
| 0.0002 | A raw-contradiction average from a trigger before Emate changed the half-life, cited to show why that signal did not represent meaningful surprise. |
The GitHub repository includes its own small benchmark tables, but those are project-reported demonstrations and do not establish external comparative performance.
What the project currently provides
VoltMem describes itself as “Current-truth memory for LLM agents.” As of the repository’s description accessed October 7, 2026, version 0.4.0 lists composite escalation as the default, heuristic write matching with uncertain frames retained as twins, and an optional sidecar verifier for reconciliation. Keyword-only configurations use a threshold ladder. These are repository claims and may change.

The project documents a Python API, optional sentence-transformer embeddings, a LangChain integration and an HTTP sidecar that can be run with Docker. The repository lists the project as MIT licensed. For current installation and configuration instructions, consult the VoltMem GitHub repository; the documented installation command is pip install voltmem[embeddings].
For the conceptual design narrative and Emate’s reported measurements, see Richard Emate’s DEV Community article. The project’s own documentation and the author’s article explain the approach, but neither source independently validates the reported results.
