Retry only when the exact endpoint documents duplicate protection for the operation and you can reuse the same request identity and unchanged input. Otherwise, check the operation’s status or the target account before submitting anything new.
Why a lost response makes the result uncertain
A timeout, connection reset, or unreadable response tells you that your client did not receive a usable answer. It does not tell you whether the server received the request. LINE Developers warns that a timeout can occur even when a message was delivered. The same failure pattern can affect scheduled publishing: the side effect may have happened, while the acknowledgement did not reach your application.

That leaves two possibilities—no publication, or a publication that succeeded without confirmation. Sending a fresh request with a new identity can create a duplicate in the second case.
When a retry is duplicate-safe
A retry is safe from duplication only when the API documents deduplication or idempotency for the specific endpoint and operation, and the retry is the same logical operation. Save the operation identity, any supported retry key, and the complete request input before the first attempt. If the response is lost, reuse that identity and keep the content and recipient unchanged.

For example, LINE supports the X-Line-Retry-Key on applicable API requests. Its documentation says reusing the key prevents duplicate execution; an accepted request retried with that key is rejected with a conflict. The documented key validity is 24 hours after the first request. LINE also cautions that this protection does not guarantee message delivery, and it applies only to endpoints that support retry keys. See LINE’s retry guidance.
Posteady describes a similar pattern for certain publishing operations: save the request ID and retry with identical input. Its documentation says that text publishing requests for Threads, X, and LinkedIn do not have that request-ID guarantee. This is a vendor-specific description, not a promise about every API on those platforms. Consult Posteady’s idempotency and retry documentation for the operation you use.

What to do after a timeout or lost response
- Keep the original operation identity and payload. Do not generate a new request key or alter the intended content just because the response is missing.
- Look up the existing operation. If the publishing API returned or persisted a job ID, use its status endpoint or other documented lookup rather than treating the HTTP status alone as proof that the post went live.
- Retry only under the endpoint’s documented guarantee. If the endpoint supports idempotent replay, resend the same logical operation with the same key and unchanged input, within any stated key-validity period.
- If there is no deduplication guarantee, check the destination first. Inspect the target account or publication history for evidence of the post. If the outcome remains unclear, avoid automatically creating a new request identity; that could duplicate a successful but unacknowledged publication.
- Investigate failed jobs before creating replacement work. A failed status can have a specific cause. Review the job error and determine whether a deliberate new operation is appropriate instead of blindly replaying it.
For a multi-account or multi-post schedule, reconcile each target separately where the API exposes per-target status or identifiers. One target may have completed even if another did not.
Scheduler retries do not make publishing idempotent
A scheduler decides whether and when to attempt a job again; it does not guarantee that repeating the handler’s publishing side effect is safe. Google Cloud Scheduler considers a job failed when it does not receive acknowledgement from its handler and can retry according to the configured retry count, retry duration, and exponential backoff. Its documentation also notes that a retry sequence can overlap the next scheduled execution time. These are delivery and timing controls, not a deduplication contract for the downstream publishing API. See Google Cloud Scheduler’s retry documentation.

The handler must therefore tolerate repeated execution or preserve a stable operation key that the downstream service honors. Symfony’s Messenger documentation describes how a worker can process a message and then crash before acknowledging it, causing redelivery; it notes that a message can be delivered more than once under normal operating conditions. Supabase likewise describes webhook delivery as at-least-once and recommends deduplicating by event ID. These examples illustrate why a stable business-event identity matters when acknowledgements can be lost: Symfony Messenger and Supabase Platform Webhooks.

Retry behavior varies by provider, endpoint, and input type. Before automating retries, confirm the following for the exact publishing operation:
Rank #4
- Whether the key is honored by the publish or schedule endpoint—not just by a related API.
- Whether a repeated key returns an existing job or response, or only suppresses another execution.
- How long the key remains valid and what happens after it expires.
- Whether the API provides a status lookup and stable job or post identifiers.
- What happens if the same key is submitted with changed content or a different recipient.
- Whether a multi-target publication needs separate status checks and reconciliation for each destination.
- How scheduler retry count, backoff, duration, and overlap settings interact with the handler’s behavior.
Do not assume that a guarantee documented for one endpoint, platform input, or vendor extends to another.
