When applications move away from head office but a company’s network still sends depot traffic there first, the route can add avoidable delay—and make one office connection a dependency for every site. Serguey Shinder’s account of a depot network illustrates both risks, along with the redesign and cautious rollout that addressed them.
Why the old route became a problem
Shinder describes a network designed in 2016, when important company systems were based at head office. Depot traffic crossed a private circuit to that office, passed through a firewall and web filter, then used the head-office internet connection to reach external services.

Over time, most of the systems the company ran moved elsewhere. One application was hosted at a provider’s data centre that Shinder described as 20 miles from the largest depot. Yet traffic from that depot still detoured through head office to reach it. The route reflected an old assumption about where applications lived, not necessarily where they were now.

Shinder reported that handheld scanner responses at the largest depot had slowed to about 1.5 seconds, compared with about one-third of a second three years earlier. He attributed the added delay to the longer route, rather than a malfunctioning application. As an illustration, he estimated that 900 scans in a shift at that response time difference amounted to 20 minutes of waiting. These are the author’s figures; the account does not provide an independent test or measurement method.

How a shared internet exit can affect every site
Centralized egress can create a dependency even when the services a company needs are hosted elsewhere. In Shinder’s account, a head-office connection fault in February lasted a little over three hours. During that outage, every company site lost access to applications that were still healthy at their providers.
The distinction matters: a remote application can be available while a company’s own route to it is not. If every site depends on one office’s internet connection, a fault there can interrupt access across the network.

What the redesign changed
Shinder says the redesign gave each site local internet breakout, added a second connection over mobile at smaller sites, and moved filtering and inspection from an on-site box to a service. In practical terms, depot traffic could use a local internet path rather than traveling to head office first.

Those changes address different parts of the problem: local breakout shortens the route to external services; a secondary mobile connection offers another path at smaller sites; and service-delivered filtering and inspection move security controls away from the head-office appliance. The account describes this particular combination, not a universally suitable design or a tested comparison of alternatives.

Why migration and validation took time
The network’s filtering rules had been tuned over nine years, so shifting the inspection function was not simply a matter of changing routes. Shinder says his team rebuilt those rules and kept the depots on the old path for six months while gathering evidence that the new path behaved as intended.
That staged approach is significant because a faster route is useful only if the replacement preserves the controls and access the business needs. For a similar change, the account suggests checking the path applications actually take, accounting for existing security policy, and validating behavior before moving all sites. The six-month period is the author’s description of this project, not a standard migration duration.

What the reported outcome does—and does not—show
Shinder reports that scanner response times returned to about one-third of a second and circuit spending fell by about one-third after the redesign. The article does not publish a cost breakdown, independent measurements, or a before-and-after test protocol. Those outcomes are therefore claims about this company’s experience, not a guarantee that the same architecture will deliver the same performance or savings elsewhere.

As Shinder puts it, “A network is a set of assumptions about where things are.” His account shows how an old route can persist after the systems it was built around have moved—and why route design, resilience, security policy, and validation all matter when modernizing a multi-site network.
