Venmo says it will notify you in the app and by email when your tax documents are ready; you can then retrieve the form in the Tax Document Center. The date is an estimate, not a guarantee that every eligible user will see a form at a particular time.
When will my Venmo 1099-K be available?
Venmo lists January 31 as the estimated issuance date for a 1099-K covering goods-and-services payments. For transactions during calendar year 2025, that means an estimated availability date of January 31, 2026. Venmo says forms are made available digitally and that it sends an in-app and email notification when they are ready. Venmo’s tax-document instructions describe the date as an estimate; they do not guarantee a specific delivery hour or that a paper copy will arrive by then.

Where do I find my Venmo tax form?
- Wait for Venmo’s in-app or email notice that tax documents are available.
- Open the Venmo app or website and go to the Tax Document Center.
- View or download the available form for the relevant tax year.
If you do not see a form, check that you are viewing the correct tax year and look in the Tax Document Center rather than relying only on email. Eligibility depends on the payment activity and rules that apply to that year.

Federal threshold
For calendar-year 2025, the ordinary federal third-party settlement organization threshold requires both more than $20,000 in gross goods-and-services payments and more than 200 transactions. Venmo confirms this threshold for Venmo and PayPal activity, and the IRS describes the 2025 rule in its Form 1099-K guidance. Meeting only one of the two tests does not meet the ordinary federal threshold.

State thresholds
States may require reporting at lower amounts. Venmo’s current guidance lists these thresholds for 2025:
| State | Threshold Venmo lists for 2025 |
|---|---|
| Maryland | $600 or more |
| Massachusetts | $600 or more |
| Vermont | $600 or more |
| Illinois | More than $1,000 and four or more separate transactions |
These are the states and terms Venmo identifies in its current tax-law guidance; check the rules for your state and tax year, since state requirements can differ and change.

Backup withholding exception
Venmo says users subject to backup withholding during 2025 will receive a 1099-K even if they do not meet the ordinary threshold. Venmo describes a 24% withholding rate when withholding is required, including cases involving missing, incorrect, or unverified taxpayer information. See Venmo’s explanation of tax holds and backup withholding.
Do friends-and-family Venmo payments count?
Venmo’s 1099-K reporting description concerns payments for goods and services, not ordinary friends-and-family transfers. The way a payment is classified matters: use the appropriate payment type and keep transaction records that show what each payment was for. Mislabeling a sale as a personal transfer does not change the nature of the transaction.
Rank #3
Does receiving a 1099-K mean I owe tax?
No. A 1099-K is an information return, not a tax bill or calculation of tax due. It reports gross payment transactions; the amount may not account for fees, credits, refunds, shipping, or discounts, and it does not establish the purchase basis or taxable result of a personal-item sale. Use your own transaction records and other tax documents to determine the correct treatment. The IRS explains this in its 1099-K overview and general information FAQ.
Not receiving a 1099-K does not mean income is automatically tax-free. The IRS states: “All income, no matter the amount, is taxable unless the tax law says it isn’t – even if you don’t get a Form 1099-K.” The reporting threshold and whether a transaction is taxable are separate questions.

The threshold figures above apply to calendar-year 2025 activity and the form availability date is Venmo’s estimate for those documents. Do not assume the same threshold applies to 2026 activity or a different tax year: check the IRS and Venmo guidance for the year in question.
