If you cannot identify a simple cause, arrange a medical assessment rather than treating the appearance yourself. Seek prompt care when the surrounding skin is sore, red, swollen or warm; when a dark streak or other nail change is new or changing; or when an injury causes severe pain, limited movement, extensive bleeding, or a black or purple nail.
The detached section will not reattach to the nail bed. Assessment is aimed at finding the cause, treating any infection or other disease, and helping the nail that grows in remain attached.

What a lifting nail means
The nail plate is the hard visible part of the nail. It normally rests on the nail bed beneath it. With onycholysis, part of that plate separates, creating a white or opaque-looking area. The color reflects the gap under the plate; it does not, by itself, identify the cause.

The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) advises that a dermatologist should examine any nail that is lifting. A detached edge cannot be glued or otherwise made to adhere again. Care instead protects the exposed area while new nail grows and addresses whatever caused the separation.

Possible causes include an impact or repeated pressure, a fungal infection, psoriasis or another skin disorder, medication or systemic factors, and, less commonly, a tumour in the nail unit. Because several unrelated conditions can look similar, appearance alone is not a reliable diagnosis.
How urgently should you arrange care?
Use the route that matches the situation. The table is a triage guide, not a diagnosis.
| Situation | Recommended action | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| No clear explanation for the lifting or an unexplained change in shape or color | Book an appointment with a clinician; dermatology is appropriate where available. In the UK, NHS guidance directs patients to a GP. | An examination may be needed to distinguish trauma, infection, inflammatory disease and less common causes. |
| Changes in the skin around the nail that suggest inflammation or infection | Arrange medical advice promptly. If you have diabetes or a weakened immune system, do not delay evaluation of a suspected fungal or bacterial problem. | Infection can require prescription treatment and may spread or become harder to manage. |
| New or changing pigment, a structural abnormality, or a lump beneath or beside the nail | Arrange a dermatology assessment. | The nail unit can be affected by melanoma and other growths, even though many benign conditions can produce similar findings. |
| A significant acute injury | Seek a dermatologist or emergency medical care when the injury meets the severe-injury signs described below. | Damage may involve the nail bed, bone or deeper tissue, not just the visible nail plate. |
| A small known injury with no severe symptoms | Use the gentle wound-care steps below and monitor it. Arrange care if healing is not progressing or the cause becomes uncertain. | Minor trauma can be protected at home, but home care does not establish or treat an underlying disease. |
Signs that should move care forward
Surrounding redness, warmth, swelling or soreness
Skin around the nail that becomes sore, red, swollen and warm can indicate infection. The NHS also associates this pattern with an infected or ingrown nail. Do not assume that a lifted white area is fungal: fungal nail disease is only one possibility, and a clinician may need to confirm it before treatment.

New or changing dark pigment or structure
Arrange dermatology review for a new or changing dark streak, darkened skin next to the nail, a split nail, or a bump or nodule under it. Nail lifting is also among the changes listed in AAD guidance about nail melanoma. This does not mean that a lifted nail is melanoma; trauma, infection and other conditions are more possibilities. The reason for assessment is that the nail unit cannot be safely judged from color alone.
Severe features after an injury
AAD injured-nail guidance, reviewed by dermatologists including Shari Lipner, MD, PhD, identifies four reasons to see a board-certified dermatologist or obtain emergency medical care: inability to bend the affected finger or toe, blood covering more than half of the nail, a black or purple nail, or particularly intense pain. These criteria address injured nails and are not a complete emergency rule for every nail problem.
What to do for a minor injury while waiting
These steps apply only when the lifting followed a minor injury and none of the severe features above is present. They protect an open or tender area; they do not treat unexplained onycholysis.
- Check what is still attached. If a piece is hanging, identify the portion that is completely disconnected from skin. Do not pull on an attached section.
- Trim only the disconnected part. Use clean clippers or scissors and remove only nail that is no longer attached to skin. Stop if trimming causes significant pain or bleeding.
- Clean gently. Wash with soap and water. Do not scrape underneath the nail or probe the gap with a sharp object; NHS guidance specifically warns against cleaning under nails with sharp tools.
- Cover after bleeding stops. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly, then cover with gauze or a bandage. Keep adhesive on the surrounding skin rather than directly on the injured nail.
- Reassess the injury. If pain escalates, movement becomes limited, discoloration develops, or other concerning changes appear, use medical care instead of continuing home treatment.
Do not attempt to glue the lifted portion back down. The separated plate cannot reattach, and products placed over an injured nail can make examination or wound care more difficult.

Why the cause cannot be diagnosed by appearance alone
Trauma and repeated pressure
A single blow, crushing injury, tight footwear or repeated mechanical stress can separate the plate from its bed. The history of what happened, the amount of pain and the condition of the surrounding tissue help a clinician decide whether the injury is minor or needs imaging or urgent treatment.
Fungal infection
Fungus is one possible cause, but a white or opaque detached area does not prove it. Treating every lifted nail with an antifungal product can delay the correct diagnosis when the real cause is trauma, psoriasis or another disorder. Medical review is particularly important when several nails are involved, the condition is worsening, or treatment has failed.
Psoriasis and other skin disease
Inflammatory skin conditions can affect the nail matrix or nail bed and cause lifting, pitting, scaling or other changes. A clinician will look at the nail and the surrounding skin rather than relying on one visual feature.

Some medicines and broader health conditions are reported causes. Tell the clinician about new prescriptions, dose changes and relevant medical history; do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own because a nail has lifted.

Tumours and other uncommon causes
DermNet lists tumours among possible causes of nail separation. A persistent, unexplained or progressively changing nail therefore deserves examination even when it is not painful.
What happens at an appointment?
The clinician will ask when the lifting began, whether there was an injury or repeated pressure, which nails are affected, and whether the change is spreading. They will inspect the plate, nail bed and surrounding skin for inflammation, pigment and structural abnormalities. Depending on the findings, they may investigate infection or another underlying condition rather than prescribing treatment solely from the nail’s color.
Treatment follows the cause. Infection may need targeted medication; an inflammatory nail disorder may require management of the associated skin disease; and an injury may need wound care or assessment for deeper damage. Because the detached section itself cannot be reattached, the practical goal is healthy new growth that stays connected to the nail bed.
How to prepare for medical advice
- Note the date you first noticed separation and whether it is enlarging.
- Record any recent impact, manicure, chemical exposure, repetitive pressure or new footwear.
- List medicines and supplements, including recent changes.
- Check whether other nails or nearby skin are changing.
- Photograph the nail in good light if its appearance is changing quickly; bring the images to the appointment.
- Tell the clinician about diabetes, immune suppression or other conditions that affect infection risk.
Common questions
Will the lifted part reattach if I wait?
No. The detached portion does not reattach. Waiting may be reasonable only for a clearly minor injury without warning signs, while protecting the area and watching for change. Unexplained lifting should be assessed so the cause can be addressed.

Should I start an antifungal treatment immediately?
Not solely because the nail looks white or separated. Fungal infection is possible but not certain, and treatment is best chosen after a clinician evaluates the nail.
Is a dark nail always melanoma?
No. Bruising and other conditions can darken a nail. A new or changing streak, pigment on adjacent skin, a split, lump or unexplained lifting still warrants dermatology review because the nail unit can develop melanoma.
Is every lifted nail an emergency?
No. Urgency depends on the cause and associated findings. A minor, known injury may be protected at home, whereas unexplained change, possible infection, suspicious pigment or severe injury signs require medical assessment.
Sources and scope
This guidance reflects patient information from the American Academy of Dermatology Association, the UK National Health Service and DermNet New Zealand. NHS advice uses the UK GP pathway; readers elsewhere should use their local primary-care, dermatology or emergency service. These sources cannot diagnose an individual nail online, so persistent or unexplained lifting should be examined in person.
