There is no fixed number of days, single pain check, strength score or MRI result that guarantees readiness. Return is a progression—from rehabilitation to running and sprinting, then football-specific work and full availability—judged against the demands of the player’s role.
What “return to play” means
A worldwide football Delphi consensus defined return to play as “the moment a player has received criteria-based medical clearance and is mentally ready for full availability for match selection and/or full training.” The study gathered agreement from 58 experts selected through 28 FIFA Medical Centres of Excellence. Read the consensus paper.

That definition matters because being able to jog, take part in a modified session or feel better at rest is not the same as being ready for unrestricted training or selection. A return decision should reflect both the injury’s clinical status and the football actions the player must perform.

What clinicians assess before clearance
The football consensus identifies a combination of medical, physical and psychological considerations, rather than a single pass/fail test:
#1 Best Overall
- RELIEVES STIFF AND SORE MUSCLES: Increasing circulation and retaining therapeutic heat, the compression support wrap relieves stiff and sore thigh muscles. Effective for groin, hamstring and quad strains and pulls, the thigh support brace promotes healing, reduces recovery time and is useful in preventing re-injury.
- LIGHTWEIGHT, BREATHABLE NEOPRENE: Lightweight and breathable, the latex-free neoprene wicks away moisture and includes small ventilation holes for cool and comfortable wearability. The slim neoprene wrap can be worn under or over clothing.
- NONSLIP ADJUSTABLE FIT: Two premium elastic straps with velcro closures allow the stretchable hamstring support to be adjusted to fit thighs up to 25” in circumference. The nonslip neoprene stays in place throughout the day without sliding or bunching for exceptional comfort. Fitting the right or left leg, the adjustable thigh support can be worn by men or women.
- HSA/FSA APPROVED & VIVE GUARANTEE: Eligible for purchase with Health Savings or Flexible Spending Account funds. Plus, enjoy the Vive 60-day unconditional guarantee for added confidence in your purchase.
- Pain: no pain on palpation or during strength, flexibility and functional testing.
- Strength and flexibility: assess the injured hamstring and compare flexibility with the player’s other side or reliable baseline where clinically appropriate.
- Football function: evaluate field performance, including repeated sprint ability, deceleration drills and position-specific work. A single-leg bridge may also be among the functional tests used.
- Confidence and readiness: consider whether the player feels psychologically ready to train fully and compete.
A separate Delphi study invited 92 English professional football clubs; 20 participated, a 21.7% response rate. Its five agreed assessment domains were functional performance, strength, flexibility, pain and player confidence, with functional performance—particularly sprint ability—prominent. The authors also noted that validated return-to-play criteria were lacking. These expert views help structure a decision, but do not create a universally validated prediction rule. How rehabilitation progresses toward football
Rehabilitation generally advances from exercises and graded loading to running and sprinting, then to explosive and football-specific activity. Progression should reflect symptoms, tissue healing and injury type, and the player should demonstrate the required actions rather than simply complete a set number of days.

- Tights vs Sleeves: Get targeted relief for problematic areas rather than an all-over "squeeze" of the entire leg! This is extremely helpful for pulled hamstrings and overworked quadriceps to promote healthy blood flow, ensure optimized performance and minimize the risk of injury.
- Enhances performance by promoting blood flow, reducing muscle vibrations, and decreasing fatigue while increasing structural support and combatting the annoying effects of DOMS. Compression is also beneficial for healing damaged or torn muscles after sudden injuries.
- Wearing the BODYPROX thigh sleeves during heavy lifts can help with mind and body connection, helping to "engage" your muscles during training sessions. They ensure your muscles are getting the oxygen they need to function properly while simultaneously preventing lactic acid build-up in your muscles.
- Great to wear on and off the track! Thigh compression sleeves fit well under clothing so you can prevent and protect against further injury while at work or around the house.
- Made with a knitted blend of Nylon and Latex with 10% Spandex for extreme stretch that releases excess body heat and prevents skin irritation. Silicone waves keep sleeves in place. Comes in 4 sizes: measure the circumference at the top of your thigh to find your best fit!
- Build capacity in rehabilitation: the clinician progresses exercise selection and dosage, monitoring symptoms and response.
- Reintroduce running, then sprinting: increase the demands in a controlled way, with sprinting treated as an important football-specific capability rather than inferred from easy running.
- Add explosive and football tasks: include actions such as acceleration, deceleration, repeated sprints and position-specific drills as appropriate to the player.
- Assess full-training readiness: the medical and performance team evaluates whether the player can meet training demands and whether confidence and clinical findings support progression.
- Decide on match availability: selection follows individualized clearance and readiness for the demands of the player’s position and expected role.
The 2022 London International Consensus on hamstring injuries addressed exercise choice and dosage, progression criteria, running and sprinting, and return-to-sport criteria. Its reported agreement ranges were 78.8%–96.3% for exercise selection and dosage, 73%–92.7% for progression criteria, 83%–100% for running and sprinting, and 78.3%–98.3% for return-to-sport criteria. These percentages measure expert agreement, not recovery odds or a guarantee of safety. Read the London consensus.

A pain-free day, a strength comparison or a completed training session can contribute useful information, but none independently establishes safety. A 2026 systematic review of 135 studies on male soccer players with lower-limb muscle injuries found that pain and strength were commonly cited after hamstring injury, including knee-flexor/extensor strength symmetry between limbs and no pain during soccer-specific drills. Its database search ran through 10 March 2024; it describes criteria used in studies, not a universally validated threshold. Symmetry alone does not guarantee readiness. Read the systematic review.

The football consensus specifically says MRI findings should not be used to assess readiness to return. Imaging may have a role in evaluating an injury, but an MRI result is not a clearance test. Likewise, a completed match cannot retrospectively prove that the original decision was safe.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should make the return decision?
The treating sports physician or physiotherapist should guide the assessment in collaboration with the player and relevant sports medicine, physiotherapy, fitness and coaching staff. Medical clearance should account for examination findings and functional progression; performance staff can help judge whether field work reflects training and position demands, while the player’s confidence is part of readiness.

- FREEDOM TO MOVE - This hip support brace offers custom compression for comfort and stability during walking and daily movement. Targets hip flexor, groin, thigh & hamstring areas to help manage sciatica - related discomfort with a snug, secure fit.
- WHO IT’S FOR (AND NOT FOR) - A supportive sciatica pain relief brace for hip bursitis/arthritis discomfort and groin, thigh or hamstring strains during daily tasks at home or work. Not a cure or medical treatment; results vary by person and condition.
- INCLUSIVE SIZING & PRECISE FIT - Regular and Plus sizes for women and men. Choose Left or Right leg, then measure waist/hip and thigh and follow the size chart before ordering. A correct fit helps this sciatic nerve brace stay secure and comfortable.
- ALL-DAY COMFORT - Breathable, latex-free neoprene feels gentle on skin under or over clothing. This hamstring brace uses high-density material without excessive bulk. For best support, wear daily for a few hours with a snug, well-placed fit.
- DESIGNED FOR A BETTER FIT - 3 adjustable straps fine-tune support where you need it most. Left or Right leg-specific design and longer coverage help reduce slipping and frequent readjusting during use vs most hip flexor compression wraps.
If the injury is current, worsening or not assessed, consult a qualified sports clinician rather than using a calendar estimate or self-test to decide about training or matches. The studies describe a framework for clinical decisions, not an individual diagnosis or clearance decision.
