If slides are changing before you finish speaking, check whether they are set to advance automatically. If they stay put but the audience cannot keep up, the problem is more likely slide density or a mismatch between what is shown and what is said. Generated slides can look polished and still need editing for the audience, purpose, and time available.
Why are my PowerPoint slides moving faster than I can present?
There are two different problems that can feel like the same thing: a timer is advancing the slides, or each slide asks the audience to read and absorb more than fits alongside your explanation. Diagnose which one is happening before changing the deck.

If slides change without a click
In PowerPoint, select a slide and open Transitions > Advance Slide. Check whether After is enabled and has an interval. For a live talk, turn off the automatic interval unless a timed fallback serves a specific purpose. Check the other slides too: timing can be set per slide, or applied across the deck. Microsoft notes that the timer starts after the slide’s final animation or effect finishes. The transition’s duration and the time the slide remains visible are separate settings. See Microsoft’s transition timing instructions.

If slides wait but listeners still fall behind
Look for paragraphs, multiple claims, busy charts, or animations that compete with the narration. Remove material that does not serve the slide’s spoken point. Split distinct ideas across slides when each needs explanation, and move useful reference detail into speaker notes or a handout. Then rehearse aloud with the actual sequence. These are practical applications of slide-design guidance, not a guaranteed timing formula: complexity, audience knowledge, language, and purpose affect how quickly people can follow a slide. See PLOS Computational Biology’s presentation-slide guidance and the article “Help us focus, please!”.

How do I stop slides from advancing automatically?
For a speaker-led presentation, use manual advancement so you can pause, explain, take questions, and move on when the room is ready. In PowerPoint, keyboard and mouse controls let you advance, return to an earlier slide, or jump to a particular slide. A presentation remote is an optional convenience if you want that manual control away from the computer; it does not solve rushed delivery or crowded slides.
Fixed timings suit a different job: unattended displays, kiosks, or narration rehearsed to a set runtime. PowerPoint also supports rehearsal and saved timings, but a fixed interval cannot respond to an unplanned pause or audience question. Microsoft describes the setup options in its guide to creating a self-running presentation.

| Delivery choice | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Manual advancement | Live talks with questions, discussion, or variable explanation | The presenter must manage controls and rehearse transitions. |
| Fixed automatic timings | Kiosks, unattended displays, or carefully timed narration | A fixed interval cannot adapt to a live pause or question. |
| Narrated recording or video | Asynchronous viewing with a controlled runtime | Viewers have less opportunity to interrupt or redirect the talk. |
| Reference-heavy slides | A deck intended to be read after the presentation | Dense slides can slow comprehension during live narration; a separate handout may work better. |
How to make a generated deck fit the time you have
Do not try to preserve every point in the source material just because a slide tool included it. Shape the deck around what this audience needs to understand or decide, then match the visible content to the spoken explanation.
- Set the audience and outcome. Decide what listeners should know, decide, or do afterward. Remove content that does not support that outcome.
- Write one spoken takeaway per slide. Use a short sentence to state what the audience should understand after hearing the slide. If several separate points are essential, consider separate slides or another format.
- Separate support from script. Keep on-screen wording concise enough to accompany speech. Put nonessential detail in notes or a post-talk handout rather than asking people to read a paragraph while listening.
- Choose the delivery mode. Use manual advancement for a live speaker who needs to respond to the room. Use fixed timings for a self-running deck only after checking them against the narration and the time people need to read each slide.
- Rehearse the finished sequence aloud. Include pauses and transitions. If you have to rush, remove material, simplify the visual, or give the explanation more time. PowerPoint can record timings and show them in Slide Sorter view.
- Test the setup you will actually use. Check the display, Presenter View, animation behavior, keyboard or remote controls, and any embedded video before the audience arrives. Equipment and room configurations can behave differently.
How many slides can I cover in a five-minute talk?
There is no dependable universal slides-per-minute rule. Five minutes is the time available for the whole talk, including transitions, pauses, and any explanation each visual needs. A simple image may need little narration; a chart or unfamiliar concept may need more. Rehearse the real slides aloud and adjust the amount of content to the time the explanation actually takes.

Microsoft Speaker Coach recommends 100–165 words per minute, based on a field study and earlier academic work. Treat that as a coaching recommendation from Microsoft, not a universal speaking-rate threshold. The same guidance suggests taking a breath before a new slide or section. Give listeners time to connect what they hear with what they see. Before unpacking a complex chart or image, state its takeaway; then identify the part that matters. Avoid advancing while the audience is still trying to connect the narration to the visual. Frequent shifts between dense text and graphics can add cognitive load, so simplify what is on screen rather than expecting people to split attention indefinitely.

Make essential visual information accessible
Pacing also matters for people who are blind or have low vision. Say aloud meaningful information carried by graphs, images, color, and spatial arrangement instead of relying on sight alone. In PowerPoint, use unique descriptive slide titles, check reading order and contrast, choose readable type, and run the Accessibility Checker. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance covers these checks.

A 2021 study of 90 presentation videos found that 72% of 610 visual elements were insufficiently described. That is a result from the study, not an estimate of all presentations. Its abstract also reports that participants using the researchers’ system described more slide content and identified 3.26 times as many accessibility problems to fix as participants using a traditional interface.
