When an Upload Form Says “Unsupported File”, the iPhone Photo Is Usually HEIC

An “unsupported file” message on an upload form usually means the iPhone photo is saved as HEIC. Here is how to confirm the format, export a JPEG or PNG, and change future captures.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If an upload form rejects your iPhone photo as an unsupported file, the most likely cause is that the photo is saved as HEIC (also called HEIF, the High Efficiency Image Format). Many forms accept only JPEG, PNG or a shorter list of image types, so the fix is usually to convert or export the image to a type the form lists, and, if you want to avoid the problem with future photos, to change your iPhone’s capture format.

The error message alone does not prove the cause. A form can also reject a file for its size, its dimensions or a browser problem. Use the steps below to confirm the format first, then change it.

Why the message points to HEIC

Since iOS 11, iPhones can capture photos in HEIF, stored as HEIC files. Apple documents HEIF alongside its other media formats and describes it as a compact format for images. Forms built years ago, or forms built to accept only the most widely supported formats, often list JPEG and PNG and nothing else. When an iPhone photo meets such a form, the file type is the first thing to check.

Apple’s support guidance covers this situation directly: iPhone users can choose a more broadly compatible capture option, and HEIF images can be exported to JPEG or PNG on a Mac. The Apple pages reviewed for this article are the English (UK) version of its support article on HEIF and HEVC media; its publication date was not visible in the version reviewed, so check the page for its current wording and the iOS version it describes.

The form’s own list of accepted types is the only authority on what it will accept. Do not assume that a form accepts HEIC, and do not assume that it accepts JPEG just because JPEG is the most common format.

Confirm the format before you change anything

  1. Open the file picker on the form and look at the file name. A photo from an iPhone with a .HEIC extension is a HEIC file. A .JPG or .PNG file is already in a common format, and the problem lies elsewhere.
  2. Read the form’s stated accepted formats and its maximum file size. If the form names HEIC, the format is not the cause. If it names only JPEG/JPG, PNG, or both, the HEIC file must be converted.
  3. Check any size or dimension limit against the photo you are trying to upload. A converted JPEG can still fail if the form caps file size below what the photo requires.

Fix an existing photo on a Mac

Apple’s documented route for a photo that already exists is to export it from an app on a Mac. The export step produces a new file in the format you choose, and the original HEIF file stays in your library or folder.

Using Photos

  1. Open the image in the Photos app.
  2. Choose File > Export and select the format the form accepts, such as JPEG or PNG.
  3. Save the exported file, then upload that copy rather than the original.

Using Preview

  1. Open the HEIF image in Preview.
  2. Choose File > Export.
  3. Select JPEG or PNG in the format menu, save the file, and upload the exported copy.

Export produces a new file. Keep the original if you may need it again, and check the exported file’s extension before uploading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop future photos from being saved as HEIC

If you upload photos often, change the capture setting once rather than converting each image. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Camera > Formats and choose Most Compatible. Apple says that new photos taken with this setting will be saved as JPEG.

This setting only affects photos taken after you change it. It does not convert the photos already on your phone. It also means you give up HEIF capture, which uses less storage per image. If storage matters more to you than compatibility, keep the default setting and convert only the photos you need to upload.

Check the file format when you transfer from the phone

Moving photos off the iPhone by a different route can change or keep the format, and the results differ. Check the file that arrives on the other side before you upload it.

Route What the cited source says What to check
Import from a connected iPhone into Photos, Image Capture, or a PC Apple says import may convert media, so the imported file may not match the original HEIF format (Apple Support). Look at the extension of each imported file. Do not assume it is HEIC or JPEG.
OneDrive iOS app upload Microsoft says the app uploads HEIF photos in their original format (Microsoft OneDrive Support). Expect HEIC unless you change the app’s upload settings. Converting on your side is required if the form rejects HEIC.
Dropbox camera uploads Dropbox suggests saving camera uploads as JPG when you share with someone outside the Apple ecosystem (Dropbox Help). Check the camera upload format setting in the Dropbox app before relying on it.

Cloud services are not a reliable conversion step for a specific form. A cloud copy of a HEIC file is still a HEIC file unless the service’s own documentation says it converts. If you are not sure which format a route produces, export the image yourself on a Mac and upload that copy.

Windows: viewing a HEIC file is not the same as uploading it

On Windows, the Photos app may need an extension before it can open HEIF and HEVC files. Microsoft’s guidance for Windows 10 describes these extensions. Installing one lets you view the image, but it does not change the file that a website receives.

If you are on Windows and the upload form rejects a HEIC file, the fix is the same as on a Mac: export or convert the image to a format the form lists, then upload the new file. A viewing extension will not make the form accept HEIC if the form disallows it.

When the file is already JPEG and still fails

If the file name ends in .JPG or .JPEG and the form still says the file is unsupported, the format is probably not the cause. Check these in order:

  • The maximum file size shown on the form, compared with the size of the exported file.
  • Any stated image dimensions or minimum resolution.
  • The file name, if it contains characters the form does not allow.
  • The browser: try another browser, or upload from a different device, and clear any cached form data before retrying.

These are general possibilities for upload forms. They are not findings about any particular service, so check the form’s instructions for its exact limits.
