When AI can produce a draft quickly, the advantage is not simply producing more. It is knowing which tasks suit the tool, what to verify, and who should own the final decision. Studies show that AI can improve performance in some settings and undermine it in others. They do not yet prove that human judgment is a universal or measurable competitive advantage.
What happens when AI makes writing and other work cheap?
Generative AI can reduce the effort needed for some kinds of output, especially bounded tasks such as drafting or generating ideas. But a quick answer is not necessarily a correct one, and faster production does not guarantee better work. The practical shift is from spending all effort making a first version to deciding what to ask, supplying relevant constraints, checking the result, and choosing what to do with it.

That shift matters only when the tool fits the task and the reviewer can recognize problems. If an answer is difficult to verify, depends on context the model does not have, or carries serious consequences, a plausible draft can create more work or risk rather than save time.
Does generative AI improve productivity at work?
It can, but results vary by task, worker experience, and setting. These studies use different populations and measures, so their percentages should not be combined into one productivity estimate.

| Study and setting | Reported result | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| BCG, 2023: more than 750 consultants completing assigned tasks with GPT-4 | On a creative product-innovation task, about 90% of participants improved their performance; the AI group performed 40% above the non-AI group. The AI-assisted group produced 41% less diverse ideas. | Results apply to this experiment’s creative task, not all creative work. The diversity finding is a group-level result. |
| BCG, 2023: business problem-solving task designed to fall outside the model’s tested competence frontier | The GPT-4 group performed 23% worse than the non-AI group. | This shows the risk of using a model on a task where it performs poorly, even when the task has a correct answer. It is not evidence that analysis as a whole is unsuitable for AI. |
| NBER Working Paper 31161, customer-support work (2023 working paper; published in the Quarterly Journal of Economics in 2025) | Workers resolved 14% more issues per hour on average; novice and lower-skilled agents improved by 34%. Gains were minimal for experienced and highly skilled agents. | The findings concern a conversational assistant in a particular support-work setting, not every job or worker. |
| NBER Working Paper 33795, field experiment across 66 firms and 7,137 knowledge workers (2025 working paper) | Among treated workers who used the tool in the second half of the experiment—80% of that group—participants spent two fewer hours per week on email. | The authors did not detect a shift in task quantity or composition from individual-level tool access. The result is about email time in this experiment, not a general reduction in working hours. |
Together, the findings make a conditional case: AI may increase speed or performance on some work, while results can be weaker, less diverse, or worse on other tasks. They do not establish that every workplace will save time or that lower production effort automatically becomes greater value.
What skills matter when AI can produce a first draft?
The human contribution is often in the decisions around the output, rather than in accepting or rejecting AI wholesale.

- INGENIOUS CARD GAME: Experience the ingenious and highly addictive card game that's making waves everywhere. The Mind offers simple rules but a challenging test of your mental synchronization.
- ASCENDING ORDER CHALLENGE: Work together with your friends to play cards in ascending order, but here's the catch – no speaking or communication allowed. Can you beat the Mind's tricky levels.
- UNIQUE NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION: Discover the art of non-verbal communication as you read each other's cues, invent silent languages with knowing glances, and synchronize your minds to conquer the game's challenges.
- WORLDWIDE BEST-SELLER: Join the worldwide community of players who have fallen in love with The Mind. This social card game is perfect for game nights, gatherings, and bonding with friends.
- HIGH PLAYER INTERACTION: The Mind is all about player interaction and cooperation. It's a fantastic addition to your game night, encouraging teamwork and fun social dynamics.
- Task selection: Identify whether the work is bounded enough for the tool to help and whether success can be checked.
- Context and constraints: Supply the evidence, audience, rules, and local knowledge the model may not have.
- Verification: Check important claims and reasoning against reliable evidence, not merely against another fluent answer.
- Accountability: Decide who is responsible when the result affects people, money, safety, or rights.
- Evaluation: Measure whether the workflow improves quality or saves time after review, rather than counting drafts or outputs.
These are practical implications of the cited studies, not a validated universal checklist. The right division of work depends on the task, the cost of an error, and the reviewer’s expertise.
How do you know when to trust AI output?
Trust should be earned task by task, not inferred from a polished answer or success on a different kind of work. BCG’s 2023 experiment illustrates why: participants did better with GPT-4 on a creative innovation task but worse on a separate business problem-solving task designed to challenge the model. The useful lesson is to test current systems on representative work and revisit that assessment as tools change—not to assume that creativity is safe or analysis is unsafe.

- Define the task and its error cost. State what a correct result looks like and what happens if the result is wrong.
- Identify what the model lacks. Consider whether the answer depends on current facts, internal information, professional expertise, or local context absent from the prompt.
- Choose a reviewer who can check it. Fluency is not evidence of correctness; the reviewer needs enough subject knowledge to spot plausible errors.
- Verify material claims. Trace them to appropriate evidence and check calculations, assumptions, and edge cases.
- Keep the consequential decision with an accountable person. AI can inform a decision without becoming its owner.
- Compare the whole workflow. Track quality and time saved against the time spent prompting, correcting, and reviewing.
Does AI-assisted work help people learn?
Not automatically. BCG’s 2024 experiment found that AI could help participants attempt work outside their established skill set, while also emphasizing that prior knowledge mattered for checking the work. Its authors cautioned that completing a task with AI did not itself produce learning in their short experiment. That supports deliberate supervision and learning design; it does not show that a novice can safely perform expert work simply by using AI.
Teams that want both output and skill development should distinguish between delegating a task and teaching it. A person may need to attempt the work unaided, explain or verify the AI-assisted answer, or receive feedback on errors. Which approach is appropriate depends on the learning goal and the risk of mistakes.

Is human judgment already a proven competitive advantage?
The evidence supports judgment as an important capability for choosing, supervising, and applying AI. It does not directly measure the economic return attributable to judgment itself, or prove that it creates a durable competitive advantage across industries. The studies measure specific task performance and time use in particular settings; their results cannot establish a universal business outcome.

BCG’s authors describe the opportunity as more than efficiency: “The value at stake lies not only in the promise of greater efficiency but also in the possibility for people to redirect time, energy, and effort away from tasks that generative AI will take over.” That is BCG’s interpretation of the potential, not a general scientific finding that every organization will realize it.

- Read two questions—guess which one was answered
- Trick your friends or totally misread them
- A party game where intuition meets accusation
- 300+ double-sided cards full of savage prompts. First to 10 correct guesses wins
- For 3+ players ages 17+
For a team, the defensible claim is narrower: as some outputs become easier to produce, the ability to select suitable work, check results competently, preserve accountability, and measure outcomes becomes more important to the quality of AI-assisted work. Whether that capability translates into a lasting competitive edge depends on the organization and the work.
