A phishing page can be assembled inside your browser rather than hosted at a normal, persistent website address. That can make the final page harder for URL blocklists to find in advance—but it does not make every browser-generated address dangerous. In a campaign analyzed by Barracuda and updated September 4, 2026, attackers routed victims through legitimate Microsoft services before the browser rendered a credential-stealing page locally.
What “inside the browser” means
Web pages are usually retrieved from a server at a website address. A browser-resident phishing page works differently: content is loaded or assembled in a browser session and displayed using a browser-generated blob: URL. Barracuda describes blob URLs as temporary references to content held locally in memory. They are also used by ordinary web applications, so seeing one is not, by itself, proof of an attack. Barracuda’s campaign analysis explains how the technique was used deceptively.

The distinction matters because security tools that retrieve and blocklist conventional phishing URLs may not have a persistent final URL to inspect before a victim encounters the page. The danger is the full deceptive chain—not the mere presence of a browser-generated address.

How Barracuda says the campaign worked
Barracuda’s report, updated September 4, 2026, describes one campaign, not a pattern that should be assumed in every phishing incident. Its reported sequence was:
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible Model(s): Magicmoon brand filter only for 24 inch -diagonally measured - widescreen monitor - aspect ratio 16:9 - filter size: width: 20 15/16", Height: 11 13/16" (531mm x 298mm)
- Superior Privacy: The computer privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (the angle is about 30 to 60 degree), but bright when looking directly at it. To change the privacy level - simply adjust your monitor’s brightness accordingly
- Eye and Screen Protection: Privacy Filter does not only protect your private life but also protects your eyes by blocking 30% of blue light , blocking the harmful blue light between 380 to 495 nm, it filters out the blue light and relieves eye strain
- Perfect For Open Workspaces: Great for maintaining screen privacy in open work spaces
- Includes Two Options: Option 1 uses clear adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to slide the privacy screen filter on and off as needed
- A victim received a DocuSign-themed email with a calendar invitation attachment.
- The invitation appeared to direct the victim through a legitimate Microsoft OAuth endpoint, then used a crafted redirect to Microsoft Teams.
- Teams loaded an external resource. The browser created a blob URL and rendered the phishing page locally.
- A service worker, sandboxed iframe, and backend messaging helped coordinate requests, navigation, and attacker-controlled behavior.
Barracuda also reported hidden command-and-control configuration that suggested the platform could be managed and updated across victims. The report does not establish how prevalent this technique is overall.
A Microsoft domain somewhere in a route is not proof that the entire interaction is safe: in this reported attack, legitimate Microsoft services formed part of the path to the malicious page. If an unexpected signing request or calendar invitation prompts you to sign in, leave that route and open the service using a saved bookmark or an address you enter yourself.

How this differs from a fake browser popup
Browser-resident blob URL phishing and browser-in-the-browser phishing can both exploit trust in what a browser appears to show, but they describe different techniques.
| Technique | What is being faked or generated | What the cited report describes |
|---|---|---|
| Browser-resident blob URL phishing | Phishing content is rendered in the browser session at a browser-generated address. | Barracuda’s September 2026 campaign used a blob URL to display the final page locally. Source |
| Browser-in-the-browser (BitB) | A web page draws a fake browser window, including elements such as a title bar, padlock, and address bar. | Mimecast’s June 24, 2026 report describes a fake browser interface inside a regular page, with attacker-controlled content in an iframe. The displayed address can differ from the real page and iframe source. Source |
A fake address bar drawn inside a page is not the browser’s real address bar. In a blob URL attack, the concern is instead how the page is generated and presented in the browser.

What individuals can do
Check the route, not just a familiar name
- Treat unexpected document-signing requests and calendar invitations as suspicious, even when a visible part of the route uses a familiar service.
- For a sign-in, open the service independently through a bookmark or a typed address. Do not rely on the link in the unexpected message.
Keep browser protection enabled, with the privacy trade-off in mind
Chrome’s Standard Safe Browsing checks sites against locally stored information. When a destination is not known locally, Chrome may send an obfuscated portion of its URL through a privacy server; it may also send additional URL or page information if it detects suspicious behavior. Enhanced protection sends more information in real time—including URLs, a small sample of page content, downloads, extension activity, and system information—to provide stronger, more customized warnings. These features are useful safeguards, not a guarantee that a novel browser-resident page will be detected. Google describes the settings and data handling in its Chrome Safe Browsing documentation.
Firefox says its built-in protection checks sites against lists of reported phishing, unwanted software, and malware sites, which update about every 30 minutes when protection is enabled. That reported-site system should not be read as a promise to catch every newly generated browser flow. See Mozilla’s explanation of phishing and malware protection.

- Privacy Screen Filter Size: If the visible area of your display has the following dimension: Width x Height (Exclude Frame/Arrow 1 to 3 mm errors): 20 15/16" x 11 13/16" (532 mm x 299 mm), then this filter is good for you. Very Important to double check your screen's Width and Height excluding frame before ordering. It's not recommended to make your selection based solely on your screen's diagonal size
- Left and Right Privacy: Not block visibility directly behind you, regardless of distance. The privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (left and right 30 to 180 degree), but clear when looking directly at it. To change the privacy levels, simply adjust your monitor's brightness level accordingly
- Matte and Glossy Sides: It's a reversible privacy screen filter, giving you the flexibility to choose glossy or matte finish. The matte side will have less glare, however the glossy side will have stronger privacy
- Perfect for Open Workspaces: Ensure your working space is bright and well lit. Privacy screens do not work in dimly lit areas
- Two Installation Option: Option 1 uses clear double side adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to take out the privacy screen filter easily as needed
Use password managers and origin-bound authentication
A password manager may decline to autofill on a fake domain; treat that as a warning cue, not conclusive proof. A person can still paste a password manually. MDN’s phishing guidance explains this limitation.

If you may have entered credentials
- Open the legitimate service independently, not through the message or suspicious page.
- Change the affected password.
- Revoke suspicious sessions if the service provides that option.
- Report the message to the organization’s security team.
What organizations should inspect
URL scanning alone is not enough for the reported attack, because the final page did not have a conventional persistent phishing URL for advance blocklisting. Barracuda recommends examining the email click path and browser behavior as well as addresses.
- Analyze calendar attachments and redirects from the original message through the eventual destination.
- Monitor OAuth authorization flows and redirect destinations for unusual behavior.
- Look for blob URLs used to display sign-in pages and suspicious service-worker registration associated with external content.
- Use phishing-resistant authentication and protect identity flows and session tokens.
- Train users to question unexpected signing and meeting requests even when a visible route includes a trusted service.
What browser-safety statistics do—and do not—show
Google said in 2024 that Safe Browsing assessed more than 10 billion URLs and files daily and issued more than 3 million user warnings for potential threats daily. Google also cited an average malicious-site lifetime of less than 10 minutes when explaining the need for real-time checks, and projected that real-time checks would increase blocked phishing attempts by 25%. The last figure was a projection, not a measured outcome; none of these figures estimates the prevalence of browser-resident blob URL phishing. See Google’s 2024 Safe Browsing announcement.
