The core views are All, Unread and Groups, but the controls you see can vary by account and client. Here’s how to find them and what each one does.
What WhatsApp Web conversation filters do
Conversation filters narrow the chats shown in your chat list. They let you switch views without deleting conversations, moving them into folders or automatically archiving them. WhatsApp described the feature as a way to find conversations faster and spend less time scrolling. WhatsApp’s April 2024 announcement introduced the original All, Unread and Groups filters.
These are not the same as search filters. A conversation filter changes which chats appear in the list; searching within WhatsApp helps you find message content, such as a particular word or attachment.
Which filters might appear?
All
Shows the ordinary, full chat-list view. Select it to leave a filtered view and return to your complete list.

Unread
Shows conversations with unread messages, including chats you have manually marked as unread. It is useful for finding conversations that still need attention.
Groups
Collects group conversations in one view. WhatsApp’s announcement says this includes Community subgroups, making the view useful for family, school, work and other group chats.

Contacts
A WhatsApp Web beta rollout reported by WABetaInfo included a Contacts filter alongside Unread and Groups. It was described as showing conversations with people whose numbers are saved in your address book. This is a beta-reported option, not a control established as available in every Web account.
Favorites and custom lists
WhatsApp later developed its list-based organization further. In November 2024, WABetaInfo reported custom-list filtering was in development for WhatsApp Web. Favorites or custom-list controls may appear in some versions, but that report does not establish universal availability. Treat them as optional additions, not part of the guaranteed basic set.

How to use filters in WhatsApp Web
- Open WhatsApp Web in your browser and sign in or link the browser session using WhatsApp on your phone.
- Open the main Chats view.
- Look above or beside the chat list for filter chips, tabs or a filter button.
- Select a view such as Unread or Groups.
- Select All to return to the ordinary chat list.
The exact placement and labels can differ between WhatsApp Web, the installed Windows or Mac app, beta builds and staged interface versions. The Web beta report showed a filter row at the top of the chat list, but it does not establish a current universal menu path.
What selecting a filter changes—and what it does not
A filter changes the conversations visible in the list; it does not change the conversations themselves. It does not delete chats, remove you from a group, automatically archive anything or create a permanent sorting rule. Returning to All restores the full list view.

Custom lists, where available, are a separate organizational feature from the basic filters: they let people group chats into named lists. The Web development report does not confirm that every account has this option. Also, the available sources do not establish how every Web build handles archived chats in the Unread view, so check the result in your own account if you rely on that combination.

Not seeing filter controls does not necessarily mean you have missed a setting. WhatsApp’s mobile announcement and the later Web beta report describe separate rollout steps, and access can differ across accounts and clients.

- Different client: WhatsApp Web, the Windows or Mac desktop app, and the Android or iOS app do not necessarily receive identical controls at the same time.
- Staged availability: A feature may be enabled for some accounts before others, or differ between stable and beta builds.
- Different interface: Filters may be displayed as chips or tabs, or tucked behind a button rather than shown as a row.
- Older session or client: Refresh WhatsApp Web and make sure you are using an up-to-date browser session. Updating may help if your client is old, but it cannot guarantee that a staged feature will appear.
Reinstalling WhatsApp is not a reliable way to force access. If the controls remain absent, your account or client may simply not have them yet.
How the Web rollout differs from the mobile launch
WhatsApp’s official announcement, dated April 16, 2024 (the page also displays April 15 in its date line), introduced All, Unread and Groups for the chat list and said the feature would roll out over the following weeks. That launch focused on WhatsApp generally and its mobile chat list. Web-specific filters were reported separately afterward for some beta users, with a set that included Unread, Contacts and Groups.
The available reporting does not establish one current Web version number or prove that every account has the same filters. Nor does the beta report establish that the desktop app mirrors Web.
