Telegram’s Chat Folders turn a crowded chat list into filtered views such as Personal, Work, News, or Unread. They do not move, copy, or delete conversations: a chat can remain in All Chats and appear in several folders at once. Use Archive when you want a conversation out of the main list.
Telegram folders in one minute
A folder is a saved chat-list filter. It can contain selected conversations, categories such as groups or channels, and—where your client exposes them—rules for unread, muted, read, or archived chats. Telegram’s underlying folder model is documented in its Dialog folders API.
- Adding a chat to a folder does not move or delete it.
- The same chat can appear in multiple folders.
- Folders are separate from pinning, muting, archiving, and deletion.
- Folder tabs or navigation sections are views of the same Telegram account.
Telegram says folders synchronize across connected official apps, including desktop, but Secret Chats are excluded from that general synchronization statement. Rendering and available controls can differ between Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, Linux, and app versions.
How to create a Telegram folder
- Open Telegram and go to Settings → Chat Folders.
- Choose Create New Folder, New Folder, or the equivalent control.
- Enter a name such as Personal, Work, Family, Projects, News, or Unread.
- Under Included Chats or Add Chats, choose individual conversations and any available chat types.
- Use Excluded Chats for exceptions.
- Save the folder.
Telegram’s official guide confirms the Settings → Chat Folders route, while current interface strings include Create New Folder, Edit Folder, Included Chats, Excluded Chats, and Delete. Labels and their exact placement may change after an Android or iOS redesign. If you do not see Chat Folders, update the official app, search Settings for “Folders,” and check for a menu simply named Folders.

Choose what a folder includes
Individual conversations
Add specific people, groups, channels, or bots when precision matters. An individual-chat folder is useful for a small project team or a short-term event.
Chat categories
Depending on the client, available categories can include contacts, non-contacts, groups, broadcast channels, bots, unread chats, muted chats, read chats, and archived chats. The API supports more filters than every client necessarily displays.
Example: a practical Work folder
- Include: colleagues, work groups, relevant channels, and project bots.
- Exclude: noisy announcement channels or muted groups that should not demand attention.
How exclusions make folders useful
Included Chats defines what may appear; Excluded Chats removes selected chats or categories even when they match an inclusion rule.
For example, include Groups and exclude one high-volume group. Every other group remains visible in the folder without maintaining a long list of individual inclusions. You can also include work chats while excluding muted announcements.

Edit, reorder, or delete folders
- Return to Settings → Chat Folders.
- Select a folder and choose Edit Folder.
- Change its name, icon or emoji (if offered), included chats, excluded chats, or rules.
- Save your changes.
Use the folder-management screen’s Edit control to change order or select Delete. Deleting a folder removes that view, not the conversations inside it. Folder order changes navigation; the gesture or button differs by platform. Telegram has documented dragging a preferred folder to the first position for Premium users who want it to open by default.
Archive conversations when you want them out of the main list
Archive is a visibility action, not a folder rule. On mobile, swipe a chat toward the archive action where supported. If folders are active and swiping performs another action—particularly on Android—long-press the chat and use the bulk-action menu, then choose Archive.
If Archive is hidden, pull down or drag the chat list to reveal it. Swiping the Archive can hide it again on some clients.

Create an unread-chat workflow
Create a folder named Unread and select the Unread rule if your client offers it. Reading a chat changes its status, so it can disappear from that dynamic view. Exclude channels, bots, or muted chats if they overwhelm the follow-up list.
If your app does not show an unread rule, rely on Telegram’s unread indicators, pin urgent chats, mute low-priority conversations, archive completed threads, and use search. “Unread” is a configurable folder rule, not necessarily a permanent built-in tab on every client.
Open Telegram to a preferred folder
Telegram documents changing the default chat folder as a Premium feature. Hold a folder, choose Reorder, and drag the preferred folder into the first position where that control is supported. This is different from merely rearranging tabs and may depend on the current client and account.
Premium also includes automatic archiving and muting of new chats under Privacy and Security; the exact label can vary. This does not block a person or bot, and it can hide legitimate first-time contacts. See Telegram’s Premium announcement and Premium FAQ. No current universal US price is stated here because billing varies by country, platform, and purchase channel.
Share a Telegram folder
Telegram’s shareable Chat Folders let you distribute a curated set of eligible groups and channels through an invite link. The sender selects which chats are included; recipients can join them and customize the resulting folder locally.
- Public groups and channels can generally be included.
- Private groups and channels require the sender to have the appropriate administrative ability to invite people.
- Individual users and bots cannot be bundled in the same way; recipients may add them manually.
- Changes to the sender’s local folder do not automatically update recipients. Update the existing invite link with the new chats.
Telegram’s published limits, current as of August 16, 2026, are 2 shareable folders with up to 100 chats each for free users, and 20 shareable folders with up to 200 chats each for Premium users. Premium users can create up to 100 invite links per folder. These are shareable-folder limits, not a universal statement about every ordinary private folder. Why a chat is missing
- Open the relevant folder and check its included and excluded rules.
- Look in Archive; pull down the chat list if Archive is hidden.
- Check whether mute and notification behavior returned or retained the chat.
- Search Telegram by name, username, or message.
- Confirm that the chat was not deleted, that you have not left it, and that it is not a Secret Chat available only on its original device.
- Update connected official clients and check connectivity before recreating a folder if synchronization appears delayed.
Common fixes
“I cannot find Chat Folders”
Update Telegram, search Settings for “folder,” check both Folders and Chat Folders, and verify that you are using an official client rather than a third-party fork. Avoid old instructions that depend on obsolete deep links or menu paths.
“Swiping does not archive”
When folders are in use, especially on Android, long-press the chat and choose Archive from the bulk-action menu.
“Archive did not stay archived”
An unmuted chat may have received a notification and returned to the main list. Mute it before archiving if it must remain there.
“A shared folder did not update”
Update the existing invite link; recipients’ copies are not changed by edits made only to your local folder.

What syncs across devices
Telegram states that Chat Folders synchronize across connected Telegram apps, including desktop apps. A Secret Chat is the significant exception to that general statement. A folder may also look different when a client lacks a particular filter or uses a different navigation design, so update the apps before assuming the folder was lost.

Can one chat be in multiple Telegram folders?
Yes. Folder membership is a filtered view, so the same conversation can match several folders.
Does adding a chat to a folder move it out of All Chats?
No. Adding it creates another view; Archive is the action intended to remove it from the main list.
Does deleting a folder delete its chats?
No. It removes the folder view and leaves the underlying conversations available.
