WhatsApp sends its six-digit registration code through your mobile carrier’s SMS service or an automated voice call—not through iMessage. First, stop requesting new codes and wait for the countdown shown in WhatsApp to finish. Then verify the number, active SIM or eSIM, carrier service, message and call filters, and finally try Call me. Repeated requests can trigger a temporary rate limit, so tapping Resend code repeatedly usually makes the delay worse.
1. Wait out WhatsApp’s retry timer
If WhatsApp displays “try again later,” a countdown, or a similar warning, follow that timer exactly. WhatsApp can impose a temporary limit after repeated requests; the duration varies by account, number, country, device and server-side risk controls. Community reports describe longer waits after repeated attempts, but there is no universal one-hour or 24-hour rule (Apple Support Community; user report).
- Do not keep switching between SMS and voice requests.
- Do not uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp to bypass the timer.
- Do not guess codes or request another code from a second device unless WhatsApp explicitly offers that option.
- Record the exact error and the time the countdown ends.
Request one new SMS only after the timer reaches zero.
2. Check the phone number and country code
On the registration screen, select the country that issued the number and enter the complete number in international format. Do not duplicate the country code in the local-number field, and do not add a local trunk prefix when that country’s international format does not use it. For a United States number, select United States (+1) and enter the ten-digit number—do not type +1 again.

Confirm that this is the number currently attached to the active SIM or eSIM. WhatsApp’s registration guidance also warns that many non-mobile and virtual-number categories are unsupported or unreliable (Apple Support Community).
3. Make sure the correct SIM or eSIM is active
The verification method belongs to the phone number, not your Apple Account. Check the iPhone’s cellular settings and make sure the line containing your WhatsApp number is turned on and selected. Menu names vary by iPhone model, carrier and iOS version, especially on dual-SIM phones.
Common SIM and eSIM problems
- The physical SIM is still in the old phone.
- An eSIM transfer did not finish or the line is disabled.
- A dual-SIM iPhone is using the other line for cellular service.
- The account is suspended, newly activated, awaiting verification or barred from SMS.
- A prepaid line has no balance or does not include SMS and calling.
- While abroad, the home line is disabled and only a data-only travel eSIM is active.
If practical, put the SIM in another compatible phone. If it still cannot receive the code there, the problem is almost certainly the line, carrier or number rather than the iPhone. Carrier-delivered SMS requires an active carrier plan; Apple does not provide the underlying SMS/MMS service (Apple Support Community).
4. Test ordinary SMS, calls and cellular data
Before trying WhatsApp again, ask someone to send a normal text and call the number. With Wi-Fi temporarily off, check whether cellular data works. Also test an outgoing text and call.

Different senders use different routes and anti-fraud systems, so receiving bank or Apple codes does not prove that WhatsApp traffic is permitted.
5. Check message and call filtering on the iPhone
Look in the Messages app’s filtered or unknown-sender areas, and review blocked numbers. Also check call screening, carrier spam controls and any third-party call or message-screening app. Labels differ across iOS releases, so use the filtering controls available on your phone.
- Make sure the iPhone has cellular service, not only Wi-Fi.
- Confirm Airplane Mode is off and the WhatsApp line is enabled.
- Temporarily disable a third-party filter only if you recognize and trust it.
- Do not search iMessage for the code: WhatsApp registration uses carrier SMS or voice, not an iMessage conversation.
Apple advises contacting the network provider to confirm SMS service and, where relevant, the ability to receive international SMS (Apple Support).
6. Improve connectivity, then request one code
These checks are low-risk diagnostics, not guaranteed fixes. After the WhatsApp timer expires:

- Toggle Airplane Mode on, wait a few seconds, then turn it off.
- Move somewhere with reliable cellular reception.
- Try once with Wi-Fi enabled and once with cellular data enabled.
- Disconnect a VPN temporarily so it cannot complicate the connection or location signal.
- Restart the iPhone once.
- Request a single new SMS and wait for it.
Do not factory-reset the iPhone or reset network settings as an early response. Those steps can erase saved settings without repairing carrier routing or WhatsApp’s server-side restriction.
7. Use WhatsApp’s “Call me” option
When WhatsApp makes voice verification available, tap Didn’t receive a verification code?, choose Call me (or the equivalent voice option), answer the call and enter the six-digit code you hear. The option may not appear immediately and can be temporarily disabled after repeated attempts.
Keep call screening and spam-blocking controls in mind, especially when traveling. The automated call may look unfamiliar or international. WhatsApp’s first-party Business Platform documentation confirms SMS and voice as verification channels, although that documentation concerns the Business Platform rather than ordinary consumer registration (Meta WhatsApp Business Platform documentation).
No legitimate support representative needs your six-digit code. Never read it to a caller or enter it into a link sent by someone claiming to be support.

8. Check the old phone during a device move
If WhatsApp is still open on another phone, inspect that device while starting registration on the iPhone. Some users report seeing a code or an in-app approval prompt on the existing WhatsApp session instead of receiving an SMS; treat this as a possible migration path, not a guaranteed behavior (Apple Support Community; user report).
Keep the old phone connected to the internet until the iPhone is verified. Never erase or sign out of it just to force a new code.

When you are outside the number’s home country, the home SIM or eSIM must still be active and able to receive SMS or calls. A local, data-only travel eSIM cannot receive a code sent to your home number. Ask the carrier whether international SMS, incoming calls and roaming are enabled and whether charges apply. You do not need a special international plan merely because you are a domestic user; this check matters when you are abroad or when the carrier routes automated traffic internationally (Apple Support).
Numbers that may not work
WhatsApp may reject or fail to deliver codes to many VoIP, landline, toll-free, premium-rate, shared-cost, universal-access and similar services. Do not assume every virtual number is rejected, but many virtual and non-mobile numbers are unsupported or unreliable. A temporary SMS-receiving website is not a safe substitute because you may lose access to the number later.

10. Ask the carrier the right questions
If ordinary SMS or calls fail—or WhatsApp SMS consistently fails while other service works—contact the carrier before making more WhatsApp requests. Ask them to verify:
- SMS service is active and the SIM/eSIM is fully provisioned.
- The line can receive international, automated and short-code SMS.
- Incoming calls and roaming are permitted where you are located.
- The number is a genuine mobile line, not an unsupported VoIP or virtual service.
- A recent port, SIM replacement or activation has completed.
- Prepaid balance and SMS/calling features are enabled.
Apple directs customers to their network provider for SMS activation and international-SMS capability (Apple Support).
11. Contact WhatsApp when both channels fail
Stop troubleshooting locally when the number is correct, ordinary SMS and calls work, the timer has expired, and both SMS and voice verification still fail. Contact WhatsApp through its official contact page: whatsapp.com/contact.
Include:
- The number in full international format, country and carrier.
- iPhone model, iOS version and WhatsApp version.
- Whether ordinary SMS, incoming calls and cellular data work.
- Whether SMS, voice verification or both failed.
- The exact error and the retry countdown shown.
- Whether the account remains active on an older phone.
Apple can help with iPhone cellular and Messages behavior, but WhatsApp controls account registration and its verification service.
12. If you are moving from Android to iPhone
Do not wipe the Android phone until all of the following are true:
- WhatsApp is verified on the iPhone.
- Your chats and media have been transferred or restored through WhatsApp’s supported process.
- You have confirmed the correct number is active on the iPhone.
- You no longer need the old device for an in-app approval or code.
Keeping the old session available preserves a possible verification route and protects access while migration is incomplete.
