What parents can see
Once a parent or guardian links their WhatsApp account to a teen’s account, they can review selected activity updates and receive alerts. WhatsApp lists these teen-account events:

- A contact is added.
- A group is created or joined.
- The teen’s name or profile picture changes.
Parents can customize notifications for some activities. These alerts report that an event occurred; they are not message previews, chat transcripts, or call recordings. WhatsApp does not document access to the teen’s chat contents through these controls.

On the teen’s phone, open WhatsApp > Settings > Parental controls, enter the parent PIN, and open Privacy settings. The available choices depend on the setting and may include Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except…, Only share with…, or Nobody.

Teens can see and adjust their privacy settings themselves. If they want to change a setting to a less restrictive option, they need parent approval using the parent PIN. The controls are optional and require linking the parent or guardian’s WhatsApp account.
Can parents read WhatsApp messages or listen to calls?
No—not through these teen parental controls. WhatsApp says personal messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted. In its Help Center article, “How to review activity alerts for teens with parental controls,” WhatsApp states: “No one outside of the chat, not even the parent or WhatsApp, can read, listen to, or share them.” Linking accounts for parental controls does not grant access to personal chat contents.

Teen controls and parent-managed accounts are different
WhatsApp generally requires users to be at least 13, although some countries or regions set a higher minimum. The service’s age-verification feature is also rolling out gradually. Parent-managed accounts are a separate experience for children below the applicable minimum age; their alerts and controls should not be treated as the teen-control feature.

Alert categories listed for parent-managed accounts are not automatically available for teen accounts. In particular, do not assume that an alert described for a younger child’s account—such as a message-request alert—also applies to teens unless WhatsApp’s current teen-specific information confirms it.

Linked devices are an account-security issue
WhatsApp says messages, media, and calls remain end-to-end encrypted on linked devices, which connect independently. Linked devices are not a documented way for a parent to use teen parental controls to see chats. For account security, review WhatsApp’s linked devices and log out any session you do not recognize. WhatsApp also says it cannot provide information about who accessed an account or the time and location of access.
Availability and where to check
WhatsApp is gradually rolling out teen parental controls, so the feature may not yet appear for every account or region. Check the current app and WhatsApp Help Center for availability, labels, and the settings offered on your account; options can vary by setting and app version.
