When all chats fail, check your phone’s internet connection, date and time, and WhatsApp version. If only one person has a single check mark, their device or account may be unavailable; that indicator alone does not prove you are blocked. For Web or desktop problems, check the computer’s connection separately from your phone.
Start by identifying what is failing
WhatsApp says sending and receiving problems are usually related to the internet connection, phone settings, or recipient availability. Test a message to another contact before changing settings: this helps distinguish a phone-side problem from an issue affecting one recipient.

Fix messages that will not send or arrive
- Check whether the connection actually works. Confirm Wi-Fi or mobile data is enabled, then try loading a webpage or using another internet-connected app. If possible, switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data and try sending again. A strong signal icon does not necessarily mean internet access is working.
- Check date and time. Make sure your phone’s date, time, and time zone are correct, preferably using the automatic setting provided by your operating system. Menu names vary between phones, so use your device’s settings search if needed.
- Review relevant app permissions and background settings. WhatsApp’s connection guidance includes allowing Background App Refresh on iPhone. The precise location of this setting can vary by iOS version; consult the current iPhone settings or WhatsApp’s guidance rather than relying on a universal menu path.
- Update WhatsApp from its official source. Install any available update through the official app store or WhatsApp’s official download route for your device. Avoid modified or unofficial WhatsApp clients.
- Restart the phone if the connection seems sound. Restarting can refresh device and app state. After the phone reconnects, open WhatsApp and retry the message.
If you still cannot send or receive messages, note whether all chats or one are affected, the exact error shown, your phone model and operating-system version, and the WhatsApp version. Contact WhatsApp support with those details. Check a current service-status source before concluding that a wider outage is responsible.
Understand what one check mark means
One check mark means the message has left your phone but has not reached the recipient’s device. If messages to other people deliver, your own connection may be working and the recipient’s availability or account status may explain the delay.

WhatsApp lists several possible recipient-side explanations, including that the person may have blocked you, changed their number, or deleted their account. A check mark by itself cannot distinguish among these possibilities, so do not treat it as proof of blocking.
Troubleshoot Web, desktop, and linked-device sync
When Web or desktop will not connect
- Check that the computer itself can access the internet.
- Update the WhatsApp desktop app or use a browser supported by WhatsApp’s current guidance.
- Check the phone and computer separately: a working phone connection does not guarantee the companion device’s connection is working.
When a linked device stops working or older chats are missing
WhatsApp says linked devices can work without the phone being online. The primary phone is still required to register the account and link a new device. The Help Center currently states that an account can have up to four linked devices at a time.

WhatsApp also documents a known issue in which some linked devices may not display up to one year of chat history. It advises keeping the linked client updated and says the history can still be viewed on the primary device. Check the phone before assuming missing chats are lost.
WhatsApp’s current linked-device guidance says a linked client may disconnect after 30 days of inactivity. It separately says linked devices log out if the primary phone has not been used for more than 14 days. These are different inactivity conditions.

Open WhatsApp’s Linked devices screen to review active sessions and log out any device you do not recognize. Link devices only through official WhatsApp apps or WhatsApp Web. WhatsApp warns that unofficial apps or websites can put account security at risk and may lead to a ban.
Protect chat history before trying destructive fixes
Before uninstalling WhatsApp, clearing app data, or taking other steps that could remove local information, confirm that your chat history has a current backup. Do not assume that linking a device creates a recoverable backup: WhatsApp describes encrypted handling of recent chat history to complete linked-device sync, but that process is not a guarantee that you can restore your chats after data is removed.

WhatsApp’s EEA Privacy Policy says encrypted offline messages may be stored for up to 30 days while the service attempts delivery. That describes the service’s delivery handling; it does not guarantee that every message will arrive or remain available in every circumstance.

If the checks above do not resolve the problem, send support a concise account of what you have tried. Include your device model, operating-system and WhatsApp versions, the error message, whether all contacts or only one are affected, and whether the issue occurs on the phone, a linked device, or both. This helps separate a phone connection problem from recipient availability or a companion-device issue.
